What Is the LF Edge Sandbox? How to Test Edge and IoT Projects

LF Edge’s free self-service Sandbox uses ZEDEDA’s SaaS platform and Project EVE’s EVE-OS to help developers test edge and IoT applications on compatible or shared devices.

LF Edge’s Sandbox is a free, self-service SaaS platform for trying LF Edge projects and solutions on edge devices. It lets developers deploy preconfigured applications from an LF Edge Marketplace—and test private applications—using either their own EVE-compatible hardware or a device reserved through an LF Shared Community Lab. ZEDEDA provides the service, which uses Project EVE’s EVE-OS to manage devices and orchestrate applications.

What the LF Edge Sandbox does

LF Edge announced the Sandbox on September 19, 2023, as a centralized place to run proofs of concept, demonstrations, end-user experiences, and private-application tests. The aim is to make it easier to evaluate edge software without first installing and learning each project separately. The official LF Edge Sandbox page says applications can be ready within minutes; that describes the platform’s intended setup experience, not a published uptime or deployment-time guarantee.

LF Edge is the Linux Foundation’s edge-computing project ecosystem. The Sandbox is not itself a new edge operating system or a single application: it is a hosted service for deploying and testing software from that ecosystem on managed devices.

Who provides it and how it works

ZEDEDA provides the Sandbox as software as a service (SaaS). Underneath, it uses Project EVE’s EVE-OS, an open, Linux-based operating system for distributed edge computing. EVE-OS manages devices and orchestrates applications, including helping run applications securely across edge hardware.

  • Flexible Power-Saving Modes: ESP32 power-management features support dynamic clock scaling and low-power operating modes, helping developers reduce energy use in compatible sensing, monitoring and connected-device applications, suitable for battery-powered Internet of Things (IoT) devices.
  • USB-C Programming with CP2102: Connect through USB-C for power, sketch uploads and serial monitoring, while GPIO, UART, SPI and I2C interfaces support sensors, displays, motor drivers and other modules (USB-C cable not included)
  • Over-the-Air Update Support: Configure OTA functionality through a compatible ESP-32 software framework to update deployed firmware over Wi-Fi without reconnecting the board by USB for every revision

The Linux Foundation’s September 2023 launch announcement describes support for applications in bare-install, virtual-machine, and container formats. That range can help users evaluate projects across different deployment styles; it does not mean every Marketplace application is available in every format.

How to get started

  1. Create an identity: Obtain a free Linux Foundation ID, then create an account for the Sandbox.
  2. Choose a device: Bring an EVE-compatible device, or reserve a device through an LF Shared Community Lab. The sources do not provide a complete hardware compatibility matrix, so confirm that a specific device is supported before planning a deployment.
  3. Onboard the device: Add the device to the Sandbox so EVE-OS can manage it.
  4. Select an application: Choose from the preconfigured applications in the LF Edge Marketplace, or use the platform to test a private application.
  5. Deploy and evaluate: Deploy the selected application to the onboarded device and use the environment for a proof of concept, demo, or other test.

The official Sandbox page is the starting point for account access and service details. Availability of shared lab devices may depend on what the lab offers; the published material does not establish a guaranteed reservation or capacity.

Can you try edge software without buying hardware?

Yes, the Sandbox presents two paths: use your own compatible hardware or reserve shared lab hardware. The Linux Foundation’s 2025 EVE update also describes experimentation without dedicated hardware. In practical terms, shared lab access can remove the need to purchase a device for an initial trial, while bringing your own device lets you evaluate software on hardware you plan to use.

“Without dedicated hardware” should not be read as a promise that every project can be tested with no device access at all. The Sandbox is built around deploying applications to edge devices, and the public descriptions do not spell out the availability or limits of each shared-hardware option.

What the Sandbox is useful for—and what to verify

  • Proofs of concept and demos: Try an LF Edge project in a managed environment before making a broader deployment decision.
  • Comparing deployment approaches: The launch announcement cites bare installs, VMs, and containers, though application-specific support can vary.
  • Private-application testing: The service page describes testing private applications as well as Marketplace selections.
  • Device and application orchestration: EVE-OS provides the management layer rather than requiring each project to be set up and managed in isolation.

Before relying on the service for a production or time-sensitive evaluation, confirm the current hardware compatibility, shared-lab access, and service availability directly with LF Edge. The cited public pages do not specify uptime guarantees, paid tiers, or detailed capacity limits. Free self-service access is described, but it should not be taken as evidence of unlimited capacity or permanent availability.
