The Invisible Internet Project (I2P) is a peer-to-peer overlay network that lets applications communicate through encrypted tunnels. It is designed mainly for services inside I2P—such as websites hosted on the network—rather than as a general-purpose route to the ordinary public web. I2P supports privacy, but that design is not a guarantee of perfect anonymity or protection from every risk.
What is I2P?
I2P is a network layer, not a single website or a single-purpose app. It runs over the internet and connects participating routers in an overlay network; applications can use that network to communicate. The project says it began in 2002. Its About I2P page and documentation describe the software, network, and supported applications.

Services hosted within I2P are often called eepsites. Users can also use applications for activities such as file sharing, email, and chat, depending on the software and configuration they choose.
How does I2P route traffic?
I2P routers create temporary, one-way paths called tunnels. An inbound tunnel carries messages toward the router that created it; an outbound tunnel carries messages away from its creator. To send a message to another destination, a router typically uses an outbound tunnel to reach a gateway for that destination’s current inbound tunnel. The project’s Tunnel Routing documentation, updated in March 2026 and identified as accurate for version 0.9.68, explains this routing model.

- Automatic Router Rebooter / Reset - Stop manually restarting your router! Automate the process to ensure highly reliable internet connection uptime
- Constantly Monitors Router and/or Modem Internet Health. Keep Connect provides 24/7/365 protection to ensure that your smart home and connected devices are always online and available.
- Notifications - Free Texts or Emails from Keep Connect notifying you of detected eventsif you choose to enter your phone number/email. You may also choose No Notifications.
- Perfect for Smart Home Reliability - Schedule Periodic Resets to keep your connection fresh and fast.
- Premium Cloud Services App Available (iOS App Store and Google Play Store) - Our Premium Keep Connect Cloud Services platform allows using our Online/Mobile App to monitor many locations in one place as well. Cloud Services allows remote management of devices at all locations as well as heartbeat monitoring of your Keep Connects to notify you in the event of an ISP internet outage at one of your sites.
These paths are made up of participating routers. Adding hops changes several qualities at once: the I2P documentation notes effects on latency, throughput, reliability, and anonymity. More hops should not be treated as an automatic improvement in speed or reliability.
What does “garlic routing” mean?
“Garlic routing” is a term used in I2P documentation for related techniques, not one perfectly fixed mechanism. It can refer to layered encryption, bundling multiple messages together, or particular ElGamal/AES encryption concepts. In the layered-encryption context, each router learns only the next-hop routing instructions it needs while forwarding traffic. The Garlic Routing documentation discusses these meanings; it was updated in October 2025 and says it is accurate for version 0.9.12.

- NIGHTHAWK WIFI 6 ROUTER FOR YOUR WHOLE HOME: Delivers fast, reliable WiFi across every room of your apartment or small home for streaming, gaming, video calls, and smart home devices, all running at the same time without slowing each other down.
- WORKS WITH YOUR EXISTING INTERNET SERVICE: Pairs with your existing modem or gateway via ethernet. Compatible with most cable, fiber, DSL, and satellite providers. Some gateways and modem router combos may require bridge mode. No coax needed.
- SET UP AND MANAGE YOUR NETWORK WITH THE NIGHTHAWK APP: Download the free Nighthawk app on iOS or Android for guided setup. Manage WiFi, run speed tests, pause devices, and set up guest networks from anywhere. Active internet required.
- READY FOR THE DEVICES YOU ALREADY OWN: Your phones, laptops, and TVs work right out of the box. WiFi 6 delivers speeds up to 1.8 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Backward compatible with WiFi 5 and earlier.
- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
What is I2P used for?
I2P is intended to support privacy-conscious communication and services within its own network. The project lists uses such as browsing I2P-hosted sites, anonymous web hosting, file sharing, email, and chat. Its documentation includes application information and guides, including a guide to hosting an eepsite.

An outproxy can forward a request from I2P to the public internet, but this is an optional service run by an external provider. The project’s FAQ describes outproxies as a convenience rather than a central part of I2P; their availability and operation depend on the provider.

- WIFI 7 THAT KEEPS UP WITH A BUSY HOME: Up to 5 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands, 1.2x faster than WiFi 6. MU-MIMO and OFDMA let multiple devices send and receive data simultaneously. Real-world speeds depend on your devices and plan.
- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Delivers up to 2,250 sq. ft. of coverage for up to 80 devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
Does I2P make users anonymous?
I2P’s architecture includes encryption and privacy features, but no network design can establish that every user is unidentifiable in every situation. The protection a person receives depends on the threat they face, the application they use, its configuration, and their own behavior. A network tunnel does not make an unsafe application safe or prevent every form of identification. Consult I2P’s documentation for its security and threat-model material, and assess whether it addresses your specific needs.

No physical product is inherent to I2P’s definition. It is software and a network architecture; the official project material describes routers, protocols, and applications rather than a required device.

How does I2P differ from Tor?
The useful distinction is architectural and practical, not a universal ranking. I2P focuses on communication and services within its own overlay, with outproxy access as an optional extra. Its introduction describes I2P’s packet-switched communication and unidirectional tunnels in contrast with Tor’s circuit-switched model. That introduction was updated in January 2025 and identifies version 0.9.65, while noting that some original material dates to 2003. For a decision, compare the applications you need, setup requirements, threat models, and the performance trade-offs of each network. I2P’s architecture introduction and tunnel-routing guide provide details on its model.
