It coordinates international work through member societies, Technical Committees and Working Groups; it is not a government regulator or a single computer-science society.
What does IFIP stand for?
IFIP stands for the International Federation for Information Processing. IFIP describes its purpose as supporting the worldwide, professional and socially responsible development and application of information and communication technologies. Its activities include professional cooperation, information exchange, education, public understanding and digital equity. This is IFIP’s own organizational description, from its About IFIP page.

When was IFIP founded?
IFIP says it was established in 1960 under UNESCO auspices, following the first World Computer Congress, held in Paris in 1959. Its official history also identifies 1960 as the beginning of the organization. IFIP’s founding connection to UNESCO does not mean UNESCO currently operates or governs it.
IFIP describes itself as a non-governmental, non-profit umbrella organization for national societies working in information processing. It also states that it was incorporated in Austria by decree of the Austrian Foreign Ministry dated 20 September 1996.

How does IFIP work?
IFIP connects member societies and individual professionals through Technical Committees and Working Groups. Its current overview lists 13 Technical Committees and more than 100 Working Groups. Their subjects range from theoretical computer science to security, artificial intelligence, communications and the social effects of ICT. Counts may change; these figures are from IFIP’s current overview.
Through these groups, IFIP supports conferences and other events, publications, international cooperation, professional development and responsible use of ICT. Its homepage reports representation from over 40 countries or regions, links to around 6,000 scientists and other professionals, and sponsorship of around 100 conferences yearly. IFIP provides these figures without stating a publication year on the page reviewed, so they should be understood as organization-reported figures, not independently verified or fixed totals.

Who can join or take part?
IFIP’s membership is organized institutionally rather than as a simple direct membership for every individual. Its membership categories are Country Representative Members, Members at Large and Associate Members. Potential applicants include professional societies, research organizations, universities, academies, companies and related federations. The specific application requirements are set out in IFIP’s statutes and bylaws; see its membership information.
Individual professionals interested in participating are directed to connect with a relevant member society, Technical Committee or Working Group. This structure lets people engage with IFIP’s subject-area work without treating the federation as a single professional society.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What does IFIP publish?
IFIP says Springer Nature Link hosts its Springer publications, including the Advances in Information and Communication Technology (AICT), Lecture Notes in Computer Science (LNCS) and Lecture Notes in Business Information Processing (LNBIP) series. According to IFIP’s publications page, articles at least four years old are freely accessible on that platform; listed holdings extend back to 2005, with some publications dating to 1995. Those arrangements do not guarantee that every title is currently accessible.
For a reader looking for IFIP academic books or conference proceedings, searching for “IFIP Advances in Information and Communication Technology books” is a focused starting point. Availability depends on the specific title and seller.
