Amazon Prime Video lets subscribers download selected movies and shows for offline viewing, but downloads are governed by several limits. These restrictions can affect how many titles you can store, which devices can hold them, how long they remain playable, and whether a specific movie or episode is available to download at all.
The exact download limit can vary depending on your country, the title’s licensing terms, the device you use, and activity across your Amazon account. Some downloads may expire after a set period, some must be watched within a limited viewing window once started, and some content is streaming-only because of rights agreements.

Amazon Prime Video Download Limits at a Glance
Amazon Prime Video lets eligible subscribers download selected movies and TV episodes for offline viewing, but the feature is controlled by several limits at once. These limits can involve the number of downloaded titles on an account, how many devices can store downloads, how long a download remains playable, and whether a specific title is licensed for offline access in your country. In practice, the exact limit you see in the app may differ depending on your location, the title, your subscription, and how your account is being used.

| Limit type | Typical Prime Video rule |
|---|---|
| Total downloaded titles | Many accounts can store a limited number of downloaded titles across compatible devices, often up to around 15 to 25 Prime Video titles at a time depending on region and licensing. |
| Devices with downloads | A downloaded title is usually limited to a small number of devices, and the same title may not be downloadable on unlimited phones or tablets at once. |
| Offline viewing period | Downloaded titles commonly remain available for a fixed period, often up to 30 days before playback is started. |
| After playback begins | Once you start watching, many downloads must be finished within a shorter window, commonly around 48 hours. |
| Title availability | Some titles cannot be downloaded at all, even if they can be streamed, because of studio, channel, rental, regional, or rights restrictions. |
The most common account-level limit users encounter is the total number of Prime Video titles that can be stored offline. Amazon’s help pages have historically described a range rather than one universal number, because the cap can vary by marketplace. A user may be able to download up to 25 titles in one country, while another account or region may show a lower ceiling. TV episodes may count individually, so downloading a full season can use the allowance quickly. If you share an Amazon household or use the same account on mulle devices, downloads made elsewhere can also count toward the same overall allowance.
Device rules are separate from the total title count. A phone, tablet, or compatible computer may hold downloads, but Amazon can restrict how many devices are authorized for offline copies of the same video. This means deleting an app or replacing a device without removing old downloads can sometimes leave the account appearing to have reached a device or title limit. The simplest way to avoid this is to delete watched downloads from within the Prime Video app before switching devices or downloading large batches of episodes for travel.
Expiration rules also matter. A title can be available to stream today but disappear from downloads later if it leaves Prime, if your channel subscription ends, if a rental period expires, or if the licensing window changes. Downloaded videos may need periodic internet access so the app can confirm rights and refresh availability. For that reason, offline downloads are best treated as temporary access rather than permanent copies, even when the video appears saved on your device.
How Many Devices Can Download Prime Video Titles
Amazon Prime Video lets you download eligible movies and shows to supported mobile devices, but the allowance is not unlimited across every phone, tablet, or app installation on your account. In most regions, the same Amazon account can have downloads on a limited number of compatible devices at one time, commonly up to four devices for Prime Video downloads. This does not mean every title can be stored on all four devices simultaneously; individual titles may have stricter rules based on licensing.
A common restriction is that the same downloaded title can usually be saved on only two devices at the same time. For example, if you download the same movie on an iPhone and an Android tablet, you may not be able to download that exact movie again on a third device until you delete it from one of the first two. Other titles may allow fewer simultaneous downloads, especially rented, purchased, premium channel, sports, or region-specific content. The Prime Video app will normally show an error message if a title has already reached its device allowance.
Device rules to keep in mind
- Downloads are tied to the Amazon account, not just the physical device. If several household members use the same account, their downloads count toward the same overall limits.
- Only supported devices can download. Downloads are typically available through the Prime Video app on compatible iOS, Android, Fire tablet, and some Windows devices, while most smart TVs, streaming sticks, game consoles, and web browsers are streaming-only.
- The same title may have its own cap. Even if your account has room for more downloaded content overall, a specific movie or episode may be limited to one or two devices.
- Profiles do not create separate download allowances. Creating multiple Prime Video profiles helps organize watchlists and recommendations, but it does not usually multiply the number of devices that can store downloads.
Location can also affect device download rules. Prime Video’s catalog and offline rights vary by country, so a title that can be downloaded while you are in one region may not have the same offline permissions in another. If you travel, already-downloaded videos may remain playable for their allowed viewing period, but new downloads and renewals depend on the rights available in your current location and the marketplace attached to your Amazon account.
If you replace a phone or tablet, uninstall the app, or share your account across several devices, it is useful to remove old downloads before trying again. Deleting a downloaded title from one device usually frees that title’s slot so it can be downloaded elsewhere. If you no longer have access to the old device, you may need to manage registered devices from your Amazon account settings or wait for the download license to expire, depending on the title and region.

How Long Downloads Stay Available
Amazon Prime Video downloads do not stay playable forever, even if the file is still stored on your phone, tablet, or compatible device. In most cases, a downloaded title remains available for a limited offline rental-style period. A common window is up to 30 days to start watching after you download it, and once playback begins, you typically have about 48 hours to finish watching. These time frames can vary by country, title, studio agreement, and whether the video is included with Prime, rented, purchased, or accessed through an add-on subscription channel.
The Prime Video app usually shows an expiration message near the downloaded title when the viewing period is close to ending. If you have not started the video within the allowed period, the download may expire and need to be downloaded again, provided the title is still available offline. If you start watching and the shorter viewing window begins, the file can become unplayable after that period even when your device has no internet connection. Reconnecting to the internet may refresh availability in some cases, but it will not override licensing limits set for that title.
Typical download timing rules
- Before playback: Many downloads can sit on your device for up to 30 days before you start watching.
- After playback starts: Many titles must be finished within roughly 48 hours once you press play.
- Expired downloads: An expired download usually has to be removed and downloaded again if offline viewing is still permitted.
- Leaving Prime or a channel: If a title is removed from Prime, your subscription ends, or an add-on channel is canceled, the download may stop working.
- Travel and location changes: Availability can change when you travel because Prime Video rights differ by region.
Downloaded videos may also expire sooner if the content provider changes the licensing terms or if Amazon removes the title from the Prime catalog. This is more common with movies and series that rotate in and out of Prime Video. For example, a show downloaded while it is included with Prime may no longer play offline if it later moves to a paid rental option or leaves the service in your region. Purchased titles generally offer broader access than Prime-included titles, but offline playback can still be controlled by device support, app rules, and rights restrictions.
To avoid losing access during a trip, open the Prime Video app while connected to the internet shortly before leaving and check that each download still appears as playable. It is also smart to start any must-watch title only when you are ready to finish it within the post-playback window. If the app shows a countdown or expiration date, treat that as the controlling limit for that specific download rather than assuming every Prime Video title follows the same schedule.

Why Some Prime Video Titles Cannot Be Downloaded
Not every movie or TV episode on Amazon Prime Video includes an offline download option. The most common cause is licensing: Amazon may have the right to stream a title in the app, but not the right to let users store a temporary offline copy on a phone, tablet, or supported Windows device. Download rights are negotiated separately from streaming rights, and they can differ by studio, distributor, country, language version, subscription tier, and rental or purchase status.
Availability can also change by location. A title that shows a download button while you are in one country may not offer downloads in another, even when the same title is visible for streaming. Prime Video’s catalog is regional, and offline viewing permissions follow those regional contracts. This is also downloaded videos may stop working after travel, account region changes, or licensing updates, especially if the app needs to reconnect and verify entitlement.
Common reasons a title has no download option
- Licensing restrictions: The rights holder allows streaming but does not permit offline downloads.
- Regional rules: Download availability can vary between countries and territories.
- Channel subscriptions: Content from Prime Video Channels may follow the channel provider’s own download rules, and some channel titles are streaming-only.
- Live or time-sensitive content: Sports, live events, news, and some recently aired programs are often unavailable for download.
- Device limitations: Downloads are generally intended for the Prime Video app on compatible mobile devices and certain desktop apps, not web browsers or unsupported smart TVs.
- Ad-supported or promotional titles: Some Freevee, sample, or limited-access titles may not include offline viewing rights.
- Account or parental controls: Profiles, maturity restrictions, and account settings can affect what appears available in the app.
The download button may also disappear temporarily because of app or account conditions rather than the title itself. For example, if the maximum number of devices already has downloads for that title, Prime Video may block additional downloads until one copy is deleted. If the device is low on storage, running an outdated app version, or not signed in correctly, the app may fail to show or complete a download. In these cases, updating the app, reconnecting to the internet, checking storage, or deleting old downloads can restore the option.

There is also a difference between Prime-included titles, rentals, purchases, and add-on subscriptions. A movie included with Prime today may become rental-only later, and the download rules can change with that shift. Purchased digital titles often have broader access than subscription titles, but they are still subject to device compatibility, regional access, and studio-imposed limits. If a title is not downloadable, the most reliable confirmation is the title detail page in the Prime Video app: if no download icon appears next to the movie or episode on a supported device, offline viewing is not currently available for that title under that account and location.

What Happens When You Reach the Download Limit
When you reach a Prime Video download limit, the app usually prevents any new offline download from starting and shows an error message or prompt explaining that the maximum number of downloads has been reached. The exact wording can vary by device, app version, country, and title, but the result is the same: you must remove one or more existing downloads before saving another title for offline viewing. This can apply to the overall number of downloaded videos on your account, the number of devices using downloads, or the limit for a specific movie or episode.
Prime Video limits are not always based on a single fixed number that every user sees in the same way. Some accounts may be able to store a larger group of eligible titles, while certain licensed titles may have stricter rules. For example, a movie may only be downloadable on a limited number of devices at the same time, even if your account has room for more downloads overall. If another phone, tablet, or supported device already has that same title saved, Prime Video may block the download until it is deleted from one of those devices.
Common messages and situations
- Too many downloads: You have reached the account or device download cap and need to delete existing offline videos.
- Downloaded on another device: The same title is already saved on the maximum number of permitted devices for that title.
- Title no longer available: The content has left Prime Video, your subscription access changed, or the license for offline viewing expired.
- Rental or purchase restriction: A rented or purchased title may have its own download, playback, and expiration rules separate from Prime membership titles.
- Regional restriction: A title that was downloadable in one country may not be available to download, renew, or watch offline after you travel to another location.
Reaching the limit does not normally delete your existing downloads automatically. Videos that are already saved should remain on the device until they expire, are manually removed, or become unavailable due to licensing or account changes. However, you may be unable to refresh an expired download or download it again if the title is no longer included with Prime, your rental window has ended, or offline rights are no longer offered for that content.
If you share a Prime account or household access, download limits can be affected by other users’ activity. Someone else may have downloaded the same series, movie, or rental on another supported device, causing a limit message on your device even if you personally have only a few videos saved. In that case, the fastest fix is to open the Prime Video app on the device that holds the download and remove it, then try the download again on the device you want to use.
For TV series, limits can also feel restrictive because each episode generally counts as a separate download. Downloading an entire season may fill available offline storage or trigger Prime Video’s content cap faster than downloading a few movies. If a season download fails partway through, check both your device storage and the Prime Video downloads list, because the app may have successfully saved some episodes before reaching the limit.
Once you delete a downloaded title, the available slot is usually freed quickly, but the app may need a moment to sync the change across your account. If the limit message remains after deleting videos, close and reopen the Prime Video app, confirm you are connected to the internet, and check whether the same title is still downloaded on another device. In some cases, signing out and back in or updating the app can help refresh the account’s download status.

How to Manage or Delete Prime Video Downloads
Managing Prime Video downloads is mainly about keeping enough storage free, staying within the allowed number of offline titles, and removing videos you no longer need. Downloads are handled inside the Prime Video app on supported mobile devices, Fire tablets, and some compatible Windows devices. They are not managed from the regular Amazon shopping app or from a web browser, and downloaded files cannot be moved to another media player or copied to a different device.
Where to find your downloaded titles
Open the Prime Video app and look for the Downloads area, usually shown in the bottom navigation bar or under your profile menu, depending on the device and app version. This screen lists movies and episodes saved for offline viewing on that device. If you use several phones or tablets, check each one separately because downloads are stored locally and do not appear as a single combined library across all devices.

How to delete Prime Video downloads
To remove a downloaded movie, open its details from the Downloads screen and choose the delete or remove download option. For TV shows, you may be able to delete individual episodes, an entire season, or all downloaded episodes for that series, depending on the app version. Deleting a download does not remove the title from your Prime Video library, watchlist, rentals, purchases, or subscription access. It only removes the offline copy from that device.
- Open the Prime Video app on the device that contains the download.
- Go to Downloads.
- Select the movie, season, or episode you want to remove.
- Tap the delete, trash, or Remove download option.
- Confirm the removal if the app asks for confirmation.
If you are close to a download limit, delete watched titles before downloading new ones. This is especially useful with TV series, where several episodes can count against your available download allowance and take up significant storage. You can also reduce future storage use by choosing a lower download quality in the Prime Video app settings. Lower-quality downloads use less space, which helps when saving mulle episodes for travel, but the picture may look softer on larger screens.
Managing downloads across devices
If Prime Video says a title is already downloaded on another device or that you have reached a device limit, check phones, tablets, and other supported devices linked to your Amazon account. Remove the offline copy from the device where it is no longer needed, then try downloading again. In shared households, another profile or family member using the same Amazon account may have downloads stored on their device, so account-wide limits can be affected even when your own device looks empty.
When a downloaded title expires, you can usually delete it from the Downloads screen and download it again if the title is still included with Prime, still available in your location, and still licensed for offline viewing. If the download button has disappeared, the title may no longer support offline playback, may have left the catalog, or may be restricted by rental, purchase, channel, or regional licensing terms.

Can I download the same Prime Video movie or episode on multiple devices?
In many cases, Amazon limits the same downloaded title to a small number of devices, often two at the same time. If a title is already downloaded on the maximum number of devices allowed, you may need to remove it from one device before downloading it on another.
How long do Prime Video downloads last before they expire?
Downloaded Prime Video titles usually remain available for a limited time, and once you start watching, you often have around 48 hours to finish. Some downloads may expire sooner depending on the title, your location, or the licensing agreement, so it’s best to check the expiration message inside the Prime Video app.
Why can’t I download some movies or shows on Amazon Prime Video?
Not every Prime Video title is available for offline viewing because download rights are controlled by studio and regional licensing agreements. Some rentals, add-on channel titles, live content, or certain third-party catalog items may only be available to stream online.
What should I do if Prime Video says I’ve reached my download limit?
Open the Prime Video app, go to your downloads, and delete titles you no longer need from that device. If the issue involves the same title being downloaded on too many devices, remove it from another phone, tablet, or computer using the same Amazon account, then try the download again.
Bottom Line
Amazon Prime Video downloads are useful for travel and offline viewing, but the limits are not one-size-fits-all. The number of titles you can save, how many devices can use downloads, and how long you have to watch them can vary by location, licensing rules, title type, and account activity.
If a movie or show does not show a download option, or if a download expires sooner than expected, it usually comes down to rights restrictions rather than a technical issue. Before a trip or long offline period, open the Prime Video app, download what you need early, and check each title’s availability window so you are not caught without access.
