IET membership and professional registration are separate credentials. Membership grades—such as Associate, Technician Member (TMIET), Member (MIET) and Fellow (FIET)—show your category within the Institution of Engineering and Technology. Professional registration—CEng, IEng, EngTech or ICTTech—shows that a licensed institution has assessed your competence and commitment against the relevant Engineering Council standard.
You can hold both, but joining the IET does not automatically register you. Registration requires a separate application and assessment.

The IET is licensed to assess and nominate applicants for all four UK registration categories. Its category guidance links them to UK-SPEC or, for ICTTech, ICTTech – The Standard. The register status is therefore a regulated professional recognition, not another name for an IET membership level.

What each IET membership grade represents
Student
Student membership is for someone enrolled on an engineering, technology or related STEM programme. The course is typically one that can support progression toward professional registration, but being a student member does not mean that registration has begun or been granted.

Associate
Associate membership is intended for people interested in engineering and technology who do not need a formal engineering qualification to join. It can suit someone early in a career, working near engineering, or building an interest before choosing a more specialised route. Associate members do not use a post-nominal letter.
Technician Member (TMIET)
TMIET is aimed at members working at technician level in a technology field. The IET lists typical benchmarks such as a relevant foundation degree, HNC or HND, NVQ or SVQ Level 4 or 5, or comparable learning, together with professional engagement. These are orientation points rather than automatic eligibility rules: the IET considers the whole application.
Member (MIET)
MIET is the principal professional membership grade for people with relevant bachelor’s-level or higher education, or equivalent professional knowledge and experience at graduate level. A degree can support an application, but the grade is not a synonym for Chartered Engineer status. MIET identifies IET membership only.
Fellow (FIET)
FIET is a senior IET membership category. Fellowship has its own current criteria and application details, so an applicant should check the IET’s live Fellow guidance rather than infer eligibility from a job title or years of service. FIET is an IET post-nominal, not an Engineering Council registration title.

The IET describes these benchmarks as typical and says applications are reviewed individually. A qualification, employer, or membership grade therefore cannot by itself promise admission to a particular grade or registration category.
What professional registration represents
Professional registration records that an applicant has demonstrated the competence and professional commitment expected for a defined UK category. The assessment is made through a licensed institution such as the IET; the Engineering Council does not provide a direct individual-registration route outside that institutional process.
CEng — Chartered Engineer
CEng is for engineers who develop solutions to complex engineering problems. The category emphasises technical analysis, creativity, innovation and the effective use of new or existing technologies. It is a competence outcome, not a reward automatically attached to holding a master’s degree, MIET or any particular job title.

IEng recognises engineers who maintain and manage applications of current and developing technology. Work can span design, development, manufacture, construction and operation. The IET assesses IEng applicants against competence areas covering knowledge and understanding; design, development and problem solving; responsibility, management or leadership; communication and interpersonal skills; and professional commitment.

EngTech — Engineering Technician
EngTech is for practitioners who apply proven techniques and procedures to practical engineering problems. It reflects demonstrated technician competence, safety and professional responsibility rather than membership of the IET’s TMIET grade.
ICTTech — ICT Technician
ICTTech covers technicians who support functions that use information and communications technology solutions, hardware and software. It is the ICT-focused registration category and follows ICTTech – The Standard rather than being an alternative name for TMIET.
Why MIET is not the same as CEng
The letters answer different questions. “MIET” tells a reader that you hold IET Member grade. “CEng” tells a reader that you are registered as a Chartered Engineer after competence assessment. The same person may legitimately hold both, but neither abbreviation expands into the other and neither should be described as equivalent.
The IET’s registration guidance gives a direct answer to the common misconception that institution membership automatically qualifies someone for registration: it does not. Some membership grades may make you eligible to apply or provide a practical route into the process, while others may not. In every case, the registration assessment still has to be completed before the Engineering Council register can show the title.

How the two application routes differ
Applying for an IET membership grade
- Choose the grade that matches your current stage. Use the IET’s membership-at-a-glance guidance as a starting point: Student, Associate, TMIET, MIET or FIET.
- Prepare your qualification and experience information. Include relevant study, employment and professional involvement. Comparable learning or experience can matter where a standard academic route is not present.
- Submit the membership application. The IET reviews applications individually, so the published benchmarks should not be treated as an automatic decision rule.
- Use only the post-nominal allowed for the grade. Student and Associate members have no designatory letters; TMIET, MIET and FIET do.
Applying for professional registration
- Select the registration category. Decide whether your current work aligns with CEng, IEng, EngTech or ICTTech. Each category has its own competence expectations.
- Map your evidence to the relevant standard. Describe what you personally did, the level of responsibility you held, the decisions you made and the results. A course title or job title alone is not competence evidence.
- Submit the institution’s application and supporting material. Requirements vary by category. The IET’s guidance may ask for qualification certificates, documentary evidence and a supporter.
- Complete the required assessment. For IEng, the IET invites applicants to a Professional Review Interview with professional assessors after reviewing the application.
- Wait for the registration decision. Successful assessment leads to registration in the chosen category; it does not merely upgrade your IET membership grade.
The IEng process is an example, not a universal script. CEng, EngTech and ICTTech have category-specific routes and evidence requirements, so do not assume that an IEng interview, supporter rule or document list applies unchanged to every application.

A degree or other accredited qualification is a common route, particularly for CEng and IEng, but the absence of a conventional degree does not automatically end the possibility of registration. The IET says experienced engineers can use alternative routes when they can demonstrate equivalent learning and competence. Assessors look at what you know and can do, how you apply it, and how you accept responsibility—not simply at the name of your qualification.
That also means a degree does not guarantee registration. An applicant still has to show the required competence and commitment, and the institution must assess the evidence. The same principle applies to membership: having MIET or FIET can support your professional identity but does not replace the registration assessment.

Using the letters correctly
If you hold both credentials, the IET’s designatory-letter guidance places Engineering Council registration letters after decorations or degrees and before IET membership letters. Its examples include:
A B Smith OBE MEng CEng FIETA B Smith OBE EngTech TMIET
In the first example, CEng is the registration title and FIET is the IET membership grade. In the second, EngTech is registration and TMIET is membership. Do not add a letter for Student or Associate membership, and do not use a registration abbreviation until the relevant status has actually been awarded.
Keeping registration and membership current
Registration is an ongoing professional status rather than a one-time addition to a résumé. The IET’s IEng guidance says maintaining that status requires continued IET membership and regular continuing professional development (CPD). Plan CPD records around your role, technical learning, safety and professional responsibilities, and follow the current IET maintenance instructions.
If you are already registered through another institution, the IET says a transfer may be possible when more than 12 months have passed since registration, subject to its transfer process. Transfer is not an automatic change of letters: verify the live IET requirements and provide whatever evidence the current process requests.
Which route should you take?
- You want professional community or recognition within the IET: choose the membership grade that reflects your present qualifications and experience.
- You need a regulated competence title: pursue the registration category that matches the work you actually perform, then prepare for assessment.
- You are unsure whether your experience is enough: use the IET’s advisor support and Career Manager to organise evidence before applying.
- You already hold MIET or TMIET: treat it as a possible platform for an application, not as proof that registration has been granted.
- You are registered elsewhere: ask the IET about transfer rather than submitting a duplicate application without checking the rules.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Writing “MIET engineer” as though MIET were a registration category.
- Assuming an HNC, degree, job title or number of years in employment guarantees CEng or IEng.
- Using CEng, IEng, EngTech or ICTTech before the Engineering Council registration decision.
- Assuming every registration category uses the same application documents or interview format.
- Ignoring CPD and membership requirements after registration.
- Adding Student or Associate letters that the IET does not award.
The safest test is simple: identify whether each set of letters names an IET membership grade or an Engineering Council registration category. If it is the latter, look for the separate competence assessment behind it.
