An HDD (hard disk drive) stores data magnetically on spinning platters. An SSD (solid-state drive) stores data in NAND flash memory and has no moving mechanical parts. Both are non-volatile storage devices: either can hold files, applications, and a computer’s operating system. The different ways they store and access data make SSDs a common choice for responsiveness and HDDs a useful choice for high-capacity storage.
What do HDD and SSD mean?
HDD stands for hard disk drive. Inside, rotating platters coated with magnetic material store data, while read/write heads move to access it. SSD stands for solid-state drive. It stores data in NAND flash memory rather than on spinning platters, so it has no moving mechanical parts. These definitions and the drives’ shared role as computer storage are described by Seagate and Kingston Technology.

How do HDDs and SSDs differ in everyday use?
| Feature | HDD | SSD |
|---|---|---|
| Storage method | Magnetic data on spinning platters, accessed by moving heads. | NAND flash memory, with no moving mechanical parts. |
| Access | Mechanical movement is involved in locating data. | Data is accessed from flash memory without platter or head movement. |
| Common priority | High-capacity storage. | Quick access and system responsiveness. |
| Best fit depends on | Whether capacity and the intended workload suit the particular drive. | Whether performance, capacity, and the intended workload suit the particular drive. |
Because an HDD must move its heads and rotate its platters to access data, while an SSD accesses flash memory without those mechanical steps, SSDs are often selected for quick access and responsive system use. HDDs remain useful when high-capacity storage is the priority. Actual performance varies with the drive model, interface, workload, and test method; there is no single speed multiplier that applies to every SSD compared with every HDD. Seagate discusses the different roles of hard drives and SSDs at its drive overview.
Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down

Either type can store an operating system, applications, and personal files. One common arrangement is an SSD for the operating system and applications, paired with an HDD for data files. This uses the SSD where quick access is useful and the HDD for additional storage capacity. Kingston describes this boot-drive and data-drive arrangement in its SATA and M.2 SSD FAQs.

- Get NVMe solid state performance with up to 1050MB/s read and 1000MB/s write speeds in a portable, high-capacity drive(1) (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device & other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
- Up to 3-meter drop protection and IP65 water and dust resistance mean this tough drive can take a beating(3) (Previously rated for 2-meter drop protection and IP55 rating. Now qualified for the higher, stated specs.)
- Use the handy carabiner loop to secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind.
- Help keep private content private with the included password protection featuring 256‐bit AES hardware encryption.(3)
- Easily manage files and automatically free up space with the SanDisk Memory Zone app.(5). Non-Operating Temperature -20°C to 85°C
This is a practical arrangement, not a requirement: a computer can use only an SSD, only an HDD, or a combination, depending on its design and storage needs.

The category name alone does not tell you whether a drive will fit or work in a particular computer. Before buying, check the device manufacturer’s specifications and confirm the supported interface and physical form factor, as well as the capacity the device supports. Kingston’s SATA and M.2 SSD FAQs cover common SSD upgrade contexts. For an external drive, interface and storage technology can also affect achievable performance; see Seagate’s external-drive performance guidance.
