DMTF created the Desktop Management Interface (DMI), an early framework for managing and tracking components in PCs, notebooks and servers. DMI is now historical: DMTF says its end-of-life process concluded on March 31, 2005.
What does DMTF mean?
DMTF now stands for Distributed Management Task Force. Its official overview describes it as an industry standards organization that develops open manageability standards for IT infrastructure. DMTF’s May 2024 overview says the organization was formed in 1992 and identifies work spanning cloud, virtualization, networks, servers and storage—not only desktop computers. The older phrase “Desktop Management Task Force” reflects the organization’s association with desktop management and its early standard, DMI. The organization and that standard are related, but they are not the same thing.
How DMTF, DMI and CIM differ
| Term | What it refers to | Status or scope |
|---|---|---|
| DMTF | The standards organization | Its current portfolio covers a broad range of IT infrastructure. DMTF Overview (May 2024) |
| DMI | Desktop Management Interface, a DMTF standard | A historical framework; DMTF says its end-of-life process concluded March 31, 2005. DMTF DMI page |
| CIM | Common Information Model, a DMTF model | Defines management information for systems, networks, applications and services, while allowing vendor extensions. DMTF CIM page |
What DMI was designed to do
DMI was intended to help management software obtain consistent information about computer components across different platforms and device types. DMTF calls it the first desktop management standard and describes its framework as addressing the management and tracking of components in desktop PCs, notebooks and servers. DMTF DMI page

The historical DMI 2.0 conformance document describes the goal as intelligent, cross-platform management of manageable network systems and devices. Its conformance baseline covered servers, mobile computers, desktops, workstations, software, management applications and hardware vendor products. That document explains DMI’s intended scope at the time; it does not mean DMI remains a current standard. DMI 2.0 Conformance Requirements (DSP0003)
What DMTF works on today
DMTF’s present work is broader than PC inventory or desktop management. Its May 2024 overview describes standards supporting traditional and emerging IT infrastructure, including cloud, virtualization, networking, servers and storage. DMTF says this work is intended to support interoperability and includes both open standards and open-source development. DMTF Overview (May 2024)
