The Computing Technology Industry Association, or CompTIA, was the name adopted in 1993 by a trade association founded as the Association of Better Computer Dealers (ABCD). The name now needs a historical qualification: according to the Global Technology Industry Association (GTIA), in 2025 the CompTIA brand and its training and certification business were sold to operate as a for-profit company, while the membership association continued as GTIA.

What does the name CompTIA mean?

CompTIA stands for the Computing Technology Industry Association. Its predecessor, ABCD, was formed in 1982 by hardware and software vendors. In 1993, ABCD adopted the CompTIA name and released the CompTIA A+ certification, according to GTIA’s organizational history.

Historically, CompTIA’s activities included certification and training, education, industry representation, philanthropy, and market research. Those describe the organization’s earlier work; they should not be treated as a description of a single current organization after the 2025 separation.

How are CompTIA and GTIA different now?

GTIA’s account of the 2025 change distinguishes the continuing membership association from the CompTIA brand and business. The membership association continued as the Global Technology Industry Association (GTIA), while the CompTIA brand and its training and certification business were sold to operate as a for-profit company.

Entity Role in GTIA’s account of the 2025 change
GTIA The membership-based association that continued after the separation.
CompTIA The brand and training and certification business sold to operate as a for-profit company.

This distinction matters when interpreting older references to “CompTIA” as both a membership association and a certification provider. The two roles should not automatically be attributed to the same current entity.

What was CompTIA known for?

IT certification and training

CompTIA A+ is part of the organization’s history from its 1993 rebranding. CompTIA later became associated with IT education, training, and certifications. A+ study materials are tied to specific exam versions, so a guide should match the exam version a learner plans to take.

Industry representation and research

CompTIA also historically represented technology-industry interests and conducted market research. In testimony submitted to a U.S. congressional hearing on April 28, 2010, the organization described a mission involving vendor-neutral standards in e-commerce, customer service, workforce development, and ICT workforce certification. The testimony described members spanning hardware, software, services, distribution, and IT professionals; it is a dated organizational account, not a current membership profile. How should older claims and figures be read?

Older descriptions and statistics refer to CompTIA at the time they were published, not necessarily to the post-2025 organizations. For example, CompTIA’s 2010 congressional testimony said it had members in more than 90 countries and referred to a $3 trillion global IT industry. Those are historical statements made in that testimony, not current figures.

A copy of a CompTIA workforce report hosted by the Technology Council of Delaware says the organization had awarded “more than 3.0 million certifications,” but the available report text does not establish a reliable publication year for that figure. It should not be presented as a current total or assigned an unverified date. View the report copy hosted by the Technology Council of Delaware.
