What Is the Beehive Cluster, and How Can You Find It?

The Beehive Cluster, or M44, is an open star cluster in Cancer. Find it between Gemini and Leo, where binoculars reveal more stars than the unaided eye.

The Beehive Cluster is Messier 44 (M44), also called Praesepe: an open cluster of stars in the constellation Cancer. Find Cancer between Gemini and Leo, then look near the constellation’s center for a faint, cloudy patch. In good conditions you can see it without a telescope; binoculars reveal more of its stars.

What is the Beehive Cluster?

M44, the Beehive Cluster and Praesepe are three names for the same open star cluster in Cancer. NASA describes it as containing about 1,000 stars and lying roughly 550 light-years away; both figures are approximate. NASA Science Photojournal

Its apparent span is about 1.5 degrees—roughly the width of three full Moons side by side. That broad spread is one reason a wide view is useful when observing it. NASA’s Messier 44 page

Where to look for M44

Cancer is a comparatively faint constellation between the brighter constellations Gemini and Leo. Use their bright stars to orient yourself: Pollux is in Gemini, Regulus is in Leo, and Procyon is in Canis Minor. M44 lies near the middle of Cancer, just above the junction of the constellation’s upside-down Y-shaped branches. NASA Science / Night Sky Network’s locating guide

How to find the Beehive Cluster

  1. Choose a suitable time. Look when Cancer is above your horizon. For Northern Hemisphere observers, spring evenings are a useful general window; M44 reaches its highest point in March. The exact viewing time depends on your date and location. NASA Science
  2. Find Gemini and Leo. Identify Pollux in Gemini and Regulus in Leo, with Procyon nearby in Canis Minor as another landmark. These brighter stars help you orient yourself toward the dimmer Cancer.
  3. Look into the center of Cancer. Aim just above the meeting point of its three branches. To the unaided eye, M44 may look like a soft, faint blur rather than a group of distinct stars.
  4. Sweep the area with binoculars. M44’s wide apparent size makes a wide view helpful. Binoculars make the cluster’s individual stars easier to distinguish.

What you can see with your eyes or binoculars

Viewing method What to expect
Unaided eye Under good sky conditions, M44 can appear as a faint, cloudy patch. NASA Science / Night Sky Network describes this naked-eye view in its Cancer skywatching guide.
Binoculars They make the stars easier to resolve; NASA’s Hubble Messier Catalog says binoculars can resolve around 20 stars. NASA’s Messier 44 page
Wide-field telescope NASA also names a wide-field telescope as an option, but the cited guidance does not compare its performance with binoculars. NASA Science / Night Sky Network

You do not need optical equipment to try to spot M44, but a clear, dark-enough sky improves the chance of seeing its faint naked-eye glow. Binoculars are a useful choice if you want to make out individual stars; no particular model or magnification is established by the cited guidance.

When and where to observe

The March high point and spring-evening window are general guidance for Northern Hemisphere observers, not a local schedule. Cancer’s position changes across the night and year, and its visibility depends on your location. A live sky chart or planetarium app set to your observing date and place can show when Cancer is above your horizon; the sources cited here do not provide local rise or set times.
