A router’s 2.5G Ethernet port provides a wired link rated for up to 2.5Gbps. Depending on the router’s design and settings, it can connect to a multi-gig internet source such as a modem or optical network terminal (ONT), or to a fast wired device or switch inside your home. It can remove a 1Gbps limit on that link, but the port alone does not increase your internet plan’s speed or guarantee 2.5Gbps throughput.
What can you plug into a 2.5G port?
There are two common uses: connecting the router to the internet source through its WAN side, or connecting a device on the home network through its LAN side. Which applies depends on the router model. Some routers have a port dedicated to WAN or LAN; some let you assign a multi-gig port to either role. Check the model’s manual or port settings rather than assuming the jack’s role from its label.

Use it as a WAN port for a faster internet connection
Connect the router’s 2.5G WAN port to a modem, ONT, or other internet source with a multi-gig Ethernet output. This can avoid a 1Gbps ceiling at the router’s WAN connection when your internet service is faster than 1Gbps. The service plan, source device, router capability, and WAN configuration must all support the higher rate. NETGEAR’s multi-gig port overview and setup guidance for Nighthawk routers describe this use.
Use it as a LAN port for a fast wired device
If the router’s 2.5G port is available for LAN use, connect a computer, network-attached storage (NAS) device, or multi-gig switch that supports 2.5GbE. This can help with local transfers or provide a wired client with a link faster than 1Gbps. A fast internet connection is not required for local network transfers to benefit, but the devices and network path still need to support the intended rate.

Some router models let you set a multi-gig port’s role in their settings. ASUS, for example, publishes model-specific guidance on setting a 2.5G or 10G port as WAN; the exact options vary by model.
What determines the actual speed?
The effective speed is constrained by the slowest relevant part of the connection. For internet traffic, that may be the service plan, modem or ONT Ethernet output, router WAN port, or the router’s routing capability. For a wired device, it may be the router’s LAN connection, an intervening switch, the device’s Ethernet adapter, or the cable.

- Internet service: A 2.5G WAN port cannot make a 1Gbps plan faster.
- Modem or ONT: Its Ethernet output must support the rate you want to receive from the router.
- Router: The port must be assigned to the right role, and the router must be capable of handling the traffic at that speed.
- LAN path and client: A client connected through a 1Gbps LAN port or gigabit switch may still be limited to 1Gbps, even if the router’s WAN link is 2.5G. The client also needs a 2.5GbE network interface to negotiate a faster link.
- Cabling: Use cable suitable for the intended link and in good condition. NETGEAR says its cited multi-gig connections support Cat5e and Cat6; ASUS recommends Cat6 or above in its guidance for a 10G WAN setup. Those recommendations do not mean replacing a cable by itself creates a multi-gig connection.
Should you use the port for WAN or LAN?
Choose based on what you need to connect and how many multi-gig ports the router provides. A router with only one 2.5G port may require you to choose between a faster WAN connection and a direct multi-gig LAN connection. Models with additional multi-gig ports can provide more flexibility, but port counts and roles are model-specific.
| Question | What to check |
|---|---|
| Is your internet plan faster than 1Gbps? | If yes, check whether the modem or ONT has a multi-gig Ethernet output and whether the router can use its 2.5G port as WAN. |
| Do you want a faster wired connection inside the home? | Check whether the router can use the port as LAN and whether the target device has a 2.5GbE interface. |
| Is there a switch between the router and device? | It must support the intended speed. A gigabit switch can limit the connected path to 1Gbps. |
| Can the port change roles? | Check the exact router model’s manual or settings; some ports have fixed roles. |
Do you need a special cable or a multi-gig switch?
Not necessarily. NETGEAR says Cat5e and Cat6 can support the multi-gig connections covered by its guidance, while ASUS recommends Cat6 or above for its 10G WAN setup. Keep a cable that is suitable for your equipment and link; replace it if it is damaged or unsuitable, not as a substitute for a multi-gig plan, modem or ONT, router, or client.

A 2.5GbE switch is optional. It can add wired multi-gig connections when the router has an available 2.5G LAN connection and you want to connect multiple compatible devices. It will not overcome a slower port elsewhere in the path. NETGEAR describes multi-gig ports as supporting multiple Ethernet speeds and as an alternative to port aggregation in its port overview.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does a 2.5G port mean you will get 2.5Gbps?
No. “2.5G” describes the port’s maximum link rate under compatible conditions, not a promised internet speed or a guarantee of a 2.5Gbps speed-test result. Internet throughput depends on the plan and the full WAN path; local transfer speed depends on the LAN path and the devices at both ends. NETGEAR’s overview also notes that multi-gig ports can negotiate different speeds with compatible equipment, including gigabit devices.
