System Integrity Protection (SIP) is a macOS security feature that restricts changes to critical system files and folders—even from processes running as root. It helps prevent malicious software and other processes from altering protected parts of the operating system.
What does System Integrity Protection protect?
Apple describes SIP as restricting components to read-only access in specific critical file-system locations to help prevent malicious code from modifying them. Protected areas include:

/System/usr/bin/sbin/var- Apps that come preinstalled with macOS
Apple identifies /Applications, /Library and /usr/local as locations where third-party apps and installers can write, subject to Apple’s stated qualifications. That does not mean every file or configuration in those locations is universally writable. [Apple Support: About System Integrity Protection on your Mac]

Why doesn’t root bypass SIP?
Root and administrator privileges do not automatically grant permission to alter SIP-protected areas. Apple says the policy applies to every process, whether or not it is sandboxed and regardless of administrator privileges. SIP relies on mandatory access-control policies in addition to ordinary file permissions; users cannot override those policies simply by changing permissions or running a command as root. How can protected system files be changed?
Apple-signed processes with special entitlements can make certain changes to protected areas. Apple’s documentation gives software updates and installers as examples. This allows authorized maintenance of macOS while limiting changes from other processes. [Apple Support]
Is SIP the same as KIP or the signed system volume?
No. SIP and Kernel Integrity Protection (KIP) are separate protections with different targets. SIP restricts changes to critical system components on disk. On Apple silicon, KIP is a hardware-based protection against modification of the kernel in memory. The signed system volume is another macOS security control, not another name for SIP. Apple’s documentation treats these as distinct parts of its security design. [Apple Platform Security]

When might SIP matter to a Mac user or developer?
For most users, SIP works in the background as a boundary around critical operating-system files. Developers may encounter it when working with system extensions, drivers, kernel extensions or other low-level software. Apple says SIP does not need to be disabled to run or debug apps in Xcode, though some development scenarios involving system extensions may require changes to security settings. Apple recommends disabling SIP only temporarily when necessary and turning it back on as soon as possible. [Apple Developer: Disabling and enabling System Integrity Protection]

How do you disable or re-enable SIP?
Disabling SIP is an exceptional step for specific low-level development work, not a routine troubleshooting measure. Apple warns that leaving it disabled makes the Mac vulnerable to malicious code. The documented workflow requires Recovery:
- Restart the Mac in macOS Recovery.
- Open Terminal from Recovery.
- To disable SIP, run
csrutil disable. To re-enable it, runcsrutil enable. - Restart the Mac.
Re-enable SIP promptly after the work that required disabling it. Apple specifically notes that on Intel-based Macs, disabling SIP removes protection for all partitions on the physical storage device; that statement should not be assumed to apply identically to every Mac architecture.
