What Is SRT Streaming? Benefits and How to Use It. SRT stands for Secure Reliable Transport: an open-source protocol that carries live audio and video between compatible endpoints over IP networks. Its main advantage is recovering some lost packets and adapting to jitter and changing bandwidth, which can help keep a stream watchable across an unreliable internet link. SRT is a transport method, not a complete streaming platform, and it does not guarantee zero-latency or flawless delivery.
What SRT does—and what it does not
SRT moves media from a sender to a receiver. The receiver must support SRT too, or the workflow needs a gateway or other conversion step before the video reaches a service that accepts a different input format. SRT is commonly used for contribution and distribution links inside a larger production workflow; it is not automatically the format viewers use to watch a stream.

Haivision describes SRT as an open-source transport technology intended to optimize streaming performance across unpredictable networks such as the internet. Its content-agnostic design means it transports media rather than deciding what the content is or where it is ultimately published. Do not assume that a consumer streaming platform accepts direct SRT input; check the receiving service’s current ingest options.

How SRT recovers media on an unstable connection
SRT’s principal loss-recovery method is Automatic Repeat reQuest (ARQ). When the receiver detects a missing packet, it can request that the sender retransmit it. Timing and latency mechanisms give that retransmission a window to arrive and help the receiver reconstruct a steadier stream without relying on unnecessarily large buffers. SRT can also adapt to jitter and bandwidth fluctuations.

Recovery consumes time: the configured latency must leave enough room for packets to be detected and resent. A very tight latency setting leaves less recovery margin, while a longer setting can improve the chance that missing data arrives in time but adds delay. The right setting depends on the path, equipment or software, and tolerance for end-to-end delay; there is no single correct value for every connection.
These mechanisms mitigate packet loss and jitter; they do not create bandwidth or eliminate severe congestion. If the connection cannot sustain the media rate, or the endpoints are incompatible, SRT cannot guarantee uninterrupted delivery.

Benefits and trade-offs
| Area | What SRT can offer | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Packet loss and jitter | Retransmission and timing mechanisms can help preserve continuity on lossy or variable IP paths. | Recovery needs time and available network capacity; tight latency reduces the recovery window. |
| Latency | Latency is configurable to suit a workflow. | It is a trade-off, not a universal “low-latency” guarantee. Account for the entire production and delivery path. |
| Media protection | The SRT project describes AES payload encryption. | Confirm that encryption is supported, enabled, and configured consistently at both endpoints when required. |
| Firewall traversal | Rendezvous behavior and outbound connection patterns may simplify some network setups. | Firewall compatibility is not universal; local network policy and endpoint configuration still apply. |
| Deployment | SRT is available as open-source software; dedicated encoders, decoders, and gateways are also options. | Verify software or hardware support at both ends and use product-specific documentation for settings. |
The SRT Alliance says that more than 700 broadcasters, cloud platforms, device manufacturers, and streaming providers rely on SRT (accessed 2026). This is the Alliance’s own adoption claim, not an independently audited count.

- An SRT-capable sender and receiver: verify compatible SRT support on both ends, including any required version or feature compatibility. A receiving platform that does not accept SRT needs a suitable intermediate gateway or conversion workflow.
- Connection details: configure the sender and receiver with matching connection information using the controls provided by your implementation. Exact labels and available modes vary by product.
- A latency setting suited to the link: allow enough recovery time for the network conditions and the workflow’s delay tolerance. Do not copy a value from another setup without checking the path.
- Consistent security settings: if media encryption is required, confirm the implementation’s encryption options and configure both endpoints to agree.
- Network access: confirm that the relevant ports and connection pattern are allowed by the endpoint network and firewall. Rendezvous or outbound behavior may help in some environments but does not override network policy.
How to use SRT
- Choose the receiving destination first. Check whether the platform or device that will receive the feed supports SRT. If it does not, identify a compatible gateway or conversion step before configuring the sender.
- Select compatible endpoints. Use an SRT-enabled software application, encoder, decoder, or gateway as needed. Dedicated hardware is optional; software can implement SRT too. Confirm the products’ own compatibility guidance.
- Set up the connection on both ends. Enter the connection details required by the chosen implementation and select a supported connection mode. Product interfaces differ, so follow the sender’s and receiver’s documentation rather than assuming identical control names.
- Choose latency for the actual network. Start with a value that gives packet recovery time appropriate to the link, then assess the resulting delay and continuity. If packets are still missed, investigate bandwidth, congestion, and recovery margin instead of treating latency as a cure for inadequate capacity.
- Configure encryption when needed. Enable the supported encryption options and match the required configuration at both endpoints. Do not assume media is encrypted simply because the workflow uses SRT.
- Test the complete path. Check that the receiver gets stable audio and video and that the final destination accepts the output. Test under representative network conditions and confirm any gateway or downstream conversion behaves as intended.
For implementation-specific setup, consult the product documentation. Haivision’s SRT Deployment Guide (version 1.5.3; page last updated February 13, 2026) covers concepts, compatibility, deployment scenarios, configuration, and FAQs, while directing users to product-specific documentation for stream management. The official SRT project README describes protocol features and sample tools such as srt-live-transmit; it cautions that sample applications are instructional and should not be used in production. Exact build requirements and feature behavior depend on version.

Common problems and how to diagnose them
- No connection: check that both endpoints support compatible SRT behavior, that their connection details agree, and that firewalls or network policy permit the selected connection pattern.
- Video breaks up or packets are missed: check available bandwidth and congestion first. If the path can support the media but recovery arrives too late, review whether the configured latency leaves enough recovery time.
- Delay is too high: latency may have been set higher than the workflow needs. Reduce it only after considering the link’s loss and jitter; a smaller recovery window can make delivery less resilient.
- Encryption prevents connection or playback: verify that encryption is supported and enabled as intended, and that the endpoint configurations match.
- The destination rejects the feed: confirm that the receiving service accepts SRT directly. If it does not, use a compatible receiving endpoint or a gateway that converts to the destination’s supported input.
- A sample tool behaves unexpectedly: distinguish instructional examples from production software, and check the version-specific documentation for the implementation you deploy.
