What Is SRT Ingest—and How to Use It for YouTube Live

SRT can carry a remote feed to an SRT-capable receiver, but the receiver must forward it to YouTube using RTMPS or HLS in the documented public workflow.

SRT ingest is not the same as sending an SRT stream directly to YouTube. You can use SRT to carry video from a remote camera or encoder to an SRT-capable receiver or relay, but that system must then forward the feed to YouTube using a documented ingest method such as RTMPS or HLS. YouTube’s public setup guides reviewed for this article describe RTMP(S) and HLS workflows, not a direct SRT URL-and-key setup. That does not rule out private or channel-specific access.

What SRT ingest means for a YouTube stream

SRT (Secure Reliable Transport) is a protocol for carrying a live media feed between compatible devices over a network. It is useful when a remote source needs to send video to a production site or relay across an internet connection that may experience packet loss, jitter, congestion, or changing bandwidth. Haivision’s guidance describes these as transport conditions SRT is designed to address: Haivision: Configuring Secure Reliable Transport (SRT) Sources.

In a YouTube workflow, think of SRT as the contribution link, not necessarily the final delivery link:

  1. A camera, encoder, or production system sends an SRT feed to a reachable SRT receiver or relay.
  2. The receiver or relay sends the feed onward to YouTube using a protocol YouTube documents publicly, typically RTMPS or, for supported use cases, HLS.

OBS documents sending to a custom SRT URL; that documentation does not establish YouTube as an SRT destination. YouTube’s public encoder guidance describes its supported setup routes separately: OBS SRT Protocol Streaming Guide, YouTube: Create a live stream with an encoder.

Does YouTube Live support direct SRT ingest?

The public YouTube setup pages reviewed here explain RTMP(S) and HLS ingest, including how to obtain a URL and stream key. They do not provide a direct SRT server URL and SRT stream-key procedure. Treat that as a description of the published workflow, not proof that YouTube has no private, limited, or channel-specific SRT option. For the standard documented route, use YouTube’s RTMPS URL and key or its HLS setup where appropriate.

YouTube recommends RTMPS for conventional encoder streaming. Its help pages explain how to select the RTMPS URL and enter it with the stream key in an encoder: Encrypt your stream using RTMPS, Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder, Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

Choose the right route

Route Use it when Setup and trade-offs
RTMPS You are sending a conventional live feed from a compatible encoder to YouTube. Enter YouTube’s RTMPS server URL and stream key in the encoder. YouTube recommends RTMPS for the documented standard workflow.
HLS Your workflow needs HDR or codecs not supported by RTMP and your encoder supports HLS. Use the HLS URL and a matching HLS stream key. YouTube says HLS has higher latency than RTMP and requires TS segments of 1–4 seconds, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, HTTPS POST/PUT, and no byte-range support. See YouTube: Set up an HLS stream and Stream HDR video on YouTube.
SRT contribution, then RTMPS or HLS A remote SRT source must reach an SRT-capable receiver or relay before the feed goes to YouTube. Configure the source and receiver to agree on connection mode, network reachability, and latency buffer. The relay must output a YouTube-supported route; do not paste an SRT URL into YouTube’s server URL field.

Send an SRT source to YouTube through a receiver or relay

This is a protocol-level workflow, not a configuration validated for any particular relay product. The receiver or relay you choose must support both receiving the source’s SRT feed and forwarding it in a format and protocol YouTube accepts.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Prepare the SRT source and receiver. Set the source encoder to send to the receiver’s SRT address. Match the sender and receiver’s connection mode (caller or listener), address and port, and latency buffer. Check that the receiver is reachable across the internet and that firewalls permit the required traffic. OBS’s guide covers custom SRT destinations and latency options: OBS SRT Protocol Streaming Guide.
  2. Choose the relay’s YouTube output. Configure it to forward to RTMPS for the usual encoder workflow, or to HLS if the production needs HLS-supported HDR or codecs and the relay can meet YouTube’s HLS requirements. YouTube’s setup pages explain the relevant URL and key: RTMPS instructions and HLS instructions.
  3. Match the output to the selected ingest route. Confirm that the relay’s codecs and stream settings are accepted by the chosen YouTube route. HLS has additional segment and playlist constraints and is typically higher latency than RTMP; an SRT input does not remove those requirements.
  4. Check link capacity and monitor the relay. Leave network headroom for the feed, then watch the encoder and receiver’s connection statistics. If the link is oversubscribed, reduce video bitrate or otherwise lower the traffic demand; Haivision recommends checking for oversubscription and adjusting bitrate as needed: Haivision SRT source guidance.
  5. Confirm the YouTube feed. Check that the relay is connected and that YouTube Live Control Room receives a preview before you start or schedule the public broadcast. Follow YouTube’s encoder workflow for the selected ingest method: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.

Stream directly with RTMPS if you do not need an SRT contribution link

If your encoder is already at the production location and you simply want to send its video to YouTube, the extra SRT receiver or relay is unnecessary. Use the documented RTMPS workflow instead.

  1. Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or select the stream.
  2. Copy the stream key and the server URL. If the displayed URL is ordinary RTMP, reveal or select the RTMPS URL when you want the encrypted connection.
  3. In your encoder, select its YouTube RTMPS preset if available. Otherwise, paste the RTMPS URL and stream key into the corresponding server and key fields.
  4. Start the encoder and check for an incoming preview in Live Control Room. Confirm the feed before going live.

YouTube’s step-by-step setup and RTMPS instructions are at Create a live stream with an encoder and Encrypt your stream using RTMPS. For encoder resolution and bitrate guidance, see YouTube’s live encoder settings guide.

How to set SRT latency without confusing it with YouTube delay

The SRT latency setting buffers the contribution link between the sender and receiver. It is not a measurement or guarantee of glass-to-glass delay, nor does it determine all delay in YouTube playback.

OBS’s SRT guide gives a 120 ms default and advises setting SRT latency to at least 2.5 times the round-trip time between the encoder and ingest server. That is OBS configuration guidance, not a YouTube end-to-end latency target. OBS expresses the URL parameter in microseconds, so check the unit expected by the particular encoder or receiver rather than copying a number without conversion: OBS SRT Protocol Streaming Guide.

Troubleshoot a failed SRT-to-YouTube path

  • YouTube rejects the SRT URL. The SRT destination belongs on the SRT-capable receiver or relay, not in YouTube’s server URL field. Configure the relay’s output with YouTube’s RTMPS URL and key, or a matching HLS setup.
  • The receiver never sees the source. Check caller/listener mode, the destination address and port, firewall rules, and whether the receiver is reachable from the sender’s network.
  • The SRT connection starts but breaks up. Check link capacity and the source’s bitrate against available bandwidth. Monitor connection statistics and reduce bitrate if the path is oversubscribed.
  • The relay connects, but YouTube has no preview. Verify the RTMPS URL and stream key, or confirm the HLS URL, key, and HLS-specific requirements. A correct SRT contribution connection does not confirm that the relay’s separate YouTube output is configured correctly.
  • The HLS stream is delayed or rejected. YouTube warns HLS has higher latency than RTMP. Check that segments are TS and 1–4 seconds long, the playlist is rolling with no more than five outstanding segments, requests use HTTPS POST/PUT, and byte ranges are not used.
  • Latency is unexpectedly high. Separate the SRT buffer from the relay’s processing and YouTube playback delay. Adjusting the SRT latency setting changes the contribution link’s buffer, not the total viewer delay.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the goal is a YouTube channel that stays live by looping uploaded recordings, rather than sending a live camera or production feed, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option—not an SRT relay. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live; the cloud keeps the playlist running without a computer or home connection staying on.
