In most sports and esports betting conversations, a point spread is a handicap used to settle a wager: points are added to the underdog’s score or subtracted from the favorite’s score, then the adjusted scores determine whether the bet wins. This does not change the real score. In the UK, however, “sports spread betting” can also mean a separate stake-per-point product, where losses may exceed the original stake.
What is a point spread?
A point spread is a scoring handicap attached to a bet on a team or competitor. The favorite is usually given a minus number, such as -5.5, and the underdog a plus number, such as +5.5. To settle the wager, apply the handicap to the selected side’s result. The side covers if its adjusted result beats the opponent’s actual result.
The handicap is only part of the bet’s settlement calculation: it does not alter the actual score or give a team a physical head start. The spread and the odds are also different things. The spread sets the score adjustment; the odds set the payout terms. Displayed odds include the bookmaker’s margin, according to the World Lottery Association’s 2024 code of practice, so they should not be read as a direct statement of an event’s true probability.
How do point spreads work?
For an underdog with a plus spread, add the spread to its score for the wager calculation. For a favorite with a minus spread, subtract the spread from its score. Compare the adjusted result with the other side’s score to see whether the selection covered.

What does +5.5 or -5.5 mean?
A +5.5 selection can lose by up to five points and still cover; a -5.5 favorite must win by at least six points to cover. The half point means the adjusted scores cannot tie, so the bet cannot push on that line.
Worked example: Cleveland -5.5 versus Orlando
DraftKings illustrates the calculation with Cleveland -5.5 against Orlando. If the final score is Cleveland 104, Orlando 100, subtract 5.5 from Cleveland’s score for betting purposes: the adjusted result is Cleveland 98.5, Orlando 100. Cleveland won the game, but Orlando +5.5 covers and Cleveland -5.5 does not. This is an operator’s explanatory example, not a current line or a recommendation.

What does it mean to cover the spread?
To cover is to perform well enough against the handicap for the selected side’s adjusted score to beat the other side’s score. A team’s result in the actual game and its result against the spread are related but not identical. Betting terminology commonly abbreviates “against the spread” as ATS; DraftKings includes the term in its betting terminology guide.
What if a team wins but doesn’t cover?
If the favorite wins by fewer points than its minus spread requires, it wins the game but fails to cover. In the Cleveland example, the Cavaliers win 104–100 but fall short of the six-point margin needed to cover -5.5.

What happens when a spread is a whole number?
A whole-number spread can produce a tie after the handicap is applied. That outcome is generally called a push, and the stake is returned under the applicable market rules. For example, Fanatics’ Tennessee house rules state that a two-way whole-number spread pushes when the adjusted scores are tied. A half-point spread avoids this type of tie.
Pushes, included game periods and overtime treatment are not universal rules. Fanatics’ Tennessee rules, for example, say full-game and second-half bets include overtime unless stated otherwise. Check the rules for the specific operator, location and market before placing a wager.

What does UK sports spread betting mean?
In the UK, “spread betting” may refer to a distinct stake-per-point wager rather than a fixed-odds point handicap. HM Revenue & Customs describes three broad forms: total bets, such as a team’s runs; supremacy bets, based on a margin of victory; and index bets, where an index represents outcomes that are not captured by a simple score.
How stake-per-point exposure works
In HMRC’s example, a firm quotes a spread of 280–300 runs for England’s first innings against Australia. The customer stakes an amount per point based on the eventual result relative to the quoted range. The outcome can therefore generate a loss many times larger than the initial stake; the stake is not a cap on financial risk. HMRC’s guidance was published in 2016 and updated on 21 July 2021, so it is useful for understanding the product’s mechanics and risk, not as current regulatory advice.

For a current operator-specific example, Spreadex Limited’s sports spread-betting rules and rules by sport took effect on 13 April 2026. Spreadex identifies those rules, its customer agreement and sport-specific rules as governing its bets, and identifies itself as authorised and regulated by the FCA. The terms of a particular product should be read directly rather than assumed from the name “spread betting.”
How do spreads work in esports?
The basic handicap calculation can be applied to esports results, but the market definition and settlement depend on the operator’s rules. A spread might apply to a match score or another defined result; the specific market must state what is being counted, over which period and how the wager is settled.
The UK Gambling Commission says esports betting should be treated no differently from betting on another live event. That is UK regulatory guidance, not a guarantee that every esports title, event or market is available in every location. Rules can also differ by jurisdiction: Pennsylvania’s code, for example, requires proposed events and wager types to be submitted for approval before an operator accepts them.
What to check before comparing spread bets
Two offers are not comparable just because they show the same team and a similar spread. Check the full market terms, as well as whether the operator and wager are lawful and available where you are.

- Push rules: Confirm whether the line is a whole number and what happens if adjusted scores tie.
- Match period and overtime: Check whether the wager covers the full match, a half or another period, and whether overtime counts.
- Settlement conditions: Read the rules for cancellations, abandoned events and the official result or statistics used to settle the market.
- Local rules and availability: Verify that the specific operator and wager are permitted in your jurisdiction.
A bookmaker’s spread is a price and settlement mechanism, not an objective prediction or a guarantee that betting action will be balanced.
