For *Freedom at Midnight*, co-dialogue writer Divy Nidhi Sharma says the challenge was to go beyond Gandhi as “the Gandhiji” and portray him as a person—one who could feel disappointed and question his own idealism without losing his dignity. Sharma believes that each generation will find new facets of Gandhi, a view he shared in an interview with Hindustan Times’ Deep Saxena published on 1 October 2026, ahead of Gandhi Jayanti.
Why Sharma wanted to show Gandhi as a person
Sharma describes the writing challenge as moving beyond a reverential public image. The aim, as he puts it, was to “go beyond him as the Gandhiji and look at him as a person.” That meant allowing the character to experience disappointment and to question his idealism, while still treating him with dignity.
Sharma credits director Nikkhil Advani, actor Chirag Vohra and the wider team with helping bring Gandhi’s human side to the screen. His comments describe the creative intention behind the portrayal; they are not a production record or an independent assessment of the series’ historical accuracy.
What Sharma says he found in Gandhi’s writings
Sharma says he had read many books and documents about Gandhi. What struck him was the breadth of Gandhi’s concerns: they ranged from politics to everyday matters such as sanitation, diet and daily habits.

“Every generation will rediscover” Gandhi
Sharma’s central thought is that readers and audiences do not encounter Gandhi in only one fixed way. Each generation brings its own questions and, in doing so, can notice different aspects of his personality. As he says: “Every generation will rediscover Gandhiji in their own ways and keep unravelling new facets and aspects of his personality.”
