Solana’s Alpenglow is a planned consensus upgrade that replaces TowerBFT with Votor, a validator voting and finality system designed to confirm blocks much faster. Its often-cited approximately 150-millisecond finality is a target, not an achieved mainnet result. BLS key registration and Validator Admission Ticket (VAT) gating are already active prerequisites; they do not mean Alpenglow consensus is live.
What Alpenglow changes
Alpenglow is a proposed overhaul of how Solana reaches consensus, not a change to how users execute transactions. The SIMD-0326 design replaces the current Proof-of-History and TowerBFT consensus with Votor. Its initial scope retains Turbine for block dissemination; a separate, later phase is intended to introduce Rotor. SIMD-0326: Alpenglow

| Area | Current design | Alpenglow plan |
|---|---|---|
| Consensus and finality | TowerBFT; the 2025 proposal cites 12.8 seconds for consensus finality. | Votor, with one- or two-round finality paths; Solana describes approximately 150 milliseconds as the target. |
| Validator votes | Votes are submitted as on-chain vote transactions. | Validators send votes directly to other validators, whose signatures can be combined into certificates. |
| Block dissemination | Turbine. | Turbine remains for the initial Votor phase; Rotor is planned as a later replacement. |
| Execution | Transaction execution. | Execution remains unchanged, according to Solana’s upgrade guide. |
How Votor reaches finality
Votor separates consensus voting from on-chain transactions. Validators exchange votes directly, and certificates aggregate signatures to show that a specified stake threshold voted. The proposal describes two ways to finalize a block:
Fast path: one round, 80% stake
A fast-finalization certificate is available when validators representing 80% of stake notarize the block in one round. This higher threshold enables the design’s quicker path when participation is strong.

Slow path: two rounds, 60% thresholds
If the fast certificate is not available, the slow path uses two rounds and certificate types with 60% stake thresholds. The proposal also says that directly finalizing a block decides earlier undecided slots in its ancestry; slots omitted from the chain are skipped. These are proposed protocol rules, not a report of observed post-upgrade behavior. SIMD-0326: Alpenglow
What the speed target means—and does not mean
Solana’s upgrade materials contrast the proposal’s 12.8-second TowerBFT consensus-finality figure with a Votor target of approximately 150 milliseconds. Those figures describe the old system and an intended target respectively; the latter is not a measured Alpenglow mainnet result. Faster consensus finality is also not the same as a change to transaction execution.
Solana’s rollout materials place Votor’s consensus activation behind a separate Agave 4.3 switch. The official pages cited here differ on expected timing: the BLS/VAT update gives Q4 2026, while the Alpenglow rollout overview lists Q3 2026. Treat the quarter as a moving estimate, not a confirmed activation date. BLS Pubkey and the Validator Admission Ticket · Alpenglow: Solana’s 150ms Finality Upgrade · Alpenglow upgrade guide

The security and implementation trade-offs
The proposal describes a “20+20” resilience model: tolerance of 20% malicious stake plus 20% offline stake. It also acknowledges that the design does not provide the 33% Byzantine security associated with two-round voting protocols. The proposal’s authors argue that the one-round path and 40% crash-failure resilience are a worthwhile trade-off; that is their rationale, not an independent consensus among researchers. SIMD-0326: Alpenglow · Alpenglow: Solana’s 150ms Finality Upgrade
The proposal aims to lower latency, bandwidth use and consensus computation overhead, while improving resilience under adversarial network conditions and crash failures. Those are intended benefits. Its stated drawback is the implementation risk and difficulty of a large, incompatible protocol change. Validators and client operators therefore face a more substantial transition than ordinary transaction users.
Rollout status: prerequisites are live, consensus is separate
As of Solana Foundation’s July 2026 update, BLS public-key registration activated on mainnet on July 8, 2026, and VAT activated on July 22, 2026. Validators without registered BLS keys stop participating in consensus under the stated admission rules. VAT is a validator admission mechanism, not the Alpenglow consensus switch. The Foundation identifies Agave 4.3 as the separate switch for joining Alpenglow consensus. BLS Pubkey and the Validator Admission Ticket

VAT currently admits a maximum of 2,000 validators, according to the Foundation’s 2026 update. After full Alpenglow migration, the stated VAT fee is 1.6 SOL per epoch; before the consensus switch, voting validators continue to pay on-chain vote transaction costs. These rollout and fee figures are the Foundation’s stated terms, not measurements of an activated Alpenglow network. BLS Pubkey and the Validator Admission Ticket

Validators
Validators need a registered BLS public key to meet the active admission requirement, and Solana’s guidance calls for Agave 4.3 before joining Alpenglow consensus. The registration and client-version steps serve different purposes: the first is already a live prerequisite, while the second is tied to the later consensus switch. Check Solana’s current validator guidance for changes to rollout timing. BLS Pubkey and the Validator Admission Ticket · Alpenglow upgrade guide
Rotor is a later phase, not part of the initial switch
Votor is the first planned phase and addresses voting and finality. Rotor is intended to replace Turbine’s tree-based block propagation, but Solana describes it as a later release without a scheduled date. So the initial Votor rollout should not be described as the simultaneous activation of both consensus and a new dissemination protocol.
