Social media marketing is the planned use of social platforms and their networked interactions to achieve marketing goals. It can include creating content, engaging with people, running paid promotions, listening to conversations, and measuring results—not simply posting updates. Organizations use it to build brands, support sales, attract traffic or leads, strengthen customer relationships, and learn about their audiences.
What social media marketing includes
A social media marketing program connects what an organization does on social platforms to a defined audience and a desired outcome. The activity may be public, such as a post or reply, or less visible, such as monitoring conversations to spot recurring customer questions.

- Content: Create and share material relevant to the audience and the organization’s goals.
- Community interaction: Talk with followers and customers, respond to questions, and encourage useful participation.
- Paid promotion: Use targeted advertising alongside organic content when it supports the plan.
- Listening and learning: Observe conversations and interaction to inform customer service, product decisions, or market understanding.
- Measurement: Track indicators that relate to the objectives rather than treating activity totals as success by themselves.
The American Marketing Association (AMA) describes a social media strategy as documenting goals, tactics, and metrics, including goals specific to each platform account. Its practical guidance also emphasizes audience, platform, content, and measurement choices. The implication is that the same post, frequency, or platform is not automatically right for every organization.

Common goals include building brand awareness, communicating with an audience, generating traffic or leads, supporting sales, improving customer relationships, and learning from customers. Gartner’s definition foregrounds connecting with audiences to build a company’s brand, increase sales, and drive website traffic. Those are possible aims, not guaranteed outcomes: social activity does not by itself establish that sales or a particular return will follow.
#1 Best Overall
A useful objective says what should change and how the organization will recognize progress. For example, a business might aim to answer customer questions more effectively, encourage qualified visits to a product page, or learn which product concerns recur in public conversations. The measure should fit the aim; follower count or posting volume alone cannot show whether the intended result occurred.
Four strategic approaches
Researchers Fangfang Li, Jorma Larimo, and Leonidas C. Leonidou identify four broad types of social media marketing strategy. They are useful lenses for describing a program, not rigid categories that every organization must fit.
Rank #2
| Approach | Main emphasis | Typical orientation |
|---|---|---|
| Social commerce | Promoting and selling through social activity | Transactional |
| Social content | Branding, communication, and content designed to attract audience response | Communication and engagement |
| Social monitoring | Listening to social activity to develop market knowledge or inform products and services | Learning |
| Social CRM | Managing customer relationships and using interaction to cultivate customer value and loyalty | Relational |
These approaches can be distinguished by the organization’s objective, the direction of interaction (from brand to customer, customer to brand, or among customers), and the level of engagement it seeks. A business may combine approaches or emphasize different ones on different accounts.
How to turn the definition into a basic plan
- Choose an organizational objective. Decide whether the priority is, for example, communication, sales support, customer service, or learning. Keep the intended outcome clear enough to guide decisions.
- Identify the audience and relevant platforms. Select platforms based on where the intended audience and useful interactions are, as well as the organization’s ability to participate there. No platform or posting schedule is universally appropriate.
- Set an objective for each account. Define what each account is expected to contribute; a platform-specific goal makes it easier to choose suitable tactics and measures.
- Plan content and interaction. Decide what the audience needs, what tone is suitable, and how the organization will respond and encourage meaningful participation. Consider relevance, quality, and a sustainable frequency.
- Choose measures tied to the objective. Specify how progress will be assessed. Use measures that reflect the aim rather than assuming that more activity or followers automatically means better results.
- Review and adjust. Use results and audience interaction to refine the content, tactics, or objectives. Social media marketing is an organized pattern of choices, not just a calendar of posts.
Social media marketing versus related terms
Social media marketing and digital marketing
Digital marketing is the wider field. It includes social media marketing alongside other online methods such as search marketing, online advertising, and content creation. Social media marketing is the part concerned with marketing through social platforms and their networked interactions.
Social media marketing and social media marketing strategy
Social media marketing describes the planned marketing work carried out through social platforms. A social media marketing strategy is the organized pattern of choices that guides that work: it connects an understanding of audience motivations and engagement to intended marketing outcomes. Strategy therefore involves more than deciding what to post.
Social media marketing and social marketing
“Social marketing” has a separate, traditional meaning. It refers to applying marketing knowledge and techniques to influence behavior where the intended benefits primarily accrue to the audience or society rather than to the marketer. Commercial social media marketing, by contrast, uses social platforms to pursue an organization’s marketing goals. The terms are related in wording, but they do not mean the same thing.
