It is inexpensive and largely managed for you, but activity on neighboring sites and the host’s account limits can affect what your site can do. A virtual private server (VPS) divides one physical machine into isolated virtual machines with assigned resources, a separate kernel and usually root or SSH access. Upgrade when you can identify a concrete constraint—such as a host resource warning, software that cannot be installed, or a need for server-level access—not simply because a VPS sounds more powerful.
Antihost offers Linux VPS plans with full root access, unlimited traffic on a 1 Gbps port and a 14-day free trial.
Shared hosting and VPS: the practical difference
The two services use the same underlying idea—a physical server runs websites—but they assign responsibility and resources differently.

| Area | Shared hosting | VPS hosting |
|---|---|---|
| Resource model | CPU, RAM and storage are pooled among many customer accounts. The host sets account limits and manages contention. | Each virtual machine receives allocated vCPU, RAM and storage that are isolated from other VPS tenants on the host. |
| Operating environment | The host controls the server operating system and common software. You work within the control panel and plan limits. | Each VPS runs its own kernel and operating-system environment, allowing server-level configuration. |
| Access | Usually limited to website, database, email and control-panel functions exposed by the host. | Usually includes root or SSH access, so you can install and configure your own software. |
| Maintenance | The host performs core server administration, patching and hardware operations. | You perform that work yourself or choose a managed VPS service; the exact division of duties depends on the plan. |
| Typical fit | Personal sites, portfolios, brochures, small blogs and early-stage stores with predictable traffic. | Applications needing consistent resources, custom services, background workers, special runtimes or higher administrative control. |
| Price relationship | Generally the lower-cost option; exact prices vary by provider, region and renewal terms. | Generally costs more because resources and administration are greater; no universal price range applies. |
“Private” in VPS describes the virtual machine boundary, not a separate physical computer. Several VPS instances can still occupy one physical host. Isolation reduces the effect of another customer’s workload, but it does not make the service equivalent to dedicated hardware.
How shared hosting works
One server, many accounts
In shared hosting, the provider installs and operates the server, then creates separate customer accounts. A web server, database service, mail system and control panel serve many sites at once. Limits may be expressed as CPU time, memory, concurrent processes, storage, inodes, database connections or monthly traffic. The names and numerical limits differ by host, so read the plan’s resource policy rather than relying on the word “unlimited.”

What the host manages
The provider normally handles the operating system, hardware, network, common service configuration and routine security updates. That reduces the amount of system administration you need to learn. In exchange, you cannot usually change kernel settings, install arbitrary daemons or select every software version. A host may block long-running processes, custom modules or unusual ports to protect all accounts on the machine.
Why performance can vary
Your site competes for pooled resources. A neighboring account receiving a sudden traffic surge, running an expensive script or performing a backup can contribute to contention. Providers use account limits and throttling to contain that effect, but a shared plan cannot promise the same resource availability as an allocated VPS. A site can therefore be fast most of the time yet slow during busy periods.

How a VPS works
Virtual machines with assigned resources
Virtualization partitions a physical server into independent virtual machines. A VPS is assigned vCPUs, RAM and storage, and the hypervisor keeps the machine’s environment separate from its neighbors. The VPS runs its own kernel and operating system, so you can choose packages, services and configuration settings that a shared account cannot expose.
Root and SSH access
Administrative access lets you install a different web server, runtime, database version, queue, worker or monitoring agent. It also lets you make changes that can break the system. You are responsible for least-privilege accounts, firewall rules, updates, backups and recovery unless a managed service explicitly includes those tasks.

Managed versus self-managed operation
With a self-managed VPS, you select and maintain the operating system and applications. A managed VPS provider can take on some patching, monitoring and support, but the included work and response times must be confirmed in writing. “Managed” is not a universal technical standard; compare the actual maintenance scope before deciding that it removes the administration burden.
When should you upgrade from shared hosting?
Use a measurable trigger. One warning or requirement is enough to investigate a move; several independent signals make the case stronger.

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →1. The host reports a resource limit
A control panel or support ticket may show CPU throttling, memory exhaustion, process limits, database-connection errors or repeated “resource usage” notices. Save the timestamps and the metric reported. Ask support whether the limit is a temporary spike, an account cap or a problem that a larger shared tier can solve. If the workload is consistently capped, a VPS provides a way to allocate more capacity and observe its use directly.
2. Your application needs software the plan forbids
Upgrade when you need a runtime version, system package, background worker, custom extension, scheduled service or network port that the shared environment will not provide. First ask the host whether an approved module or supported version is available. If not, the VPS’s root or SSH access addresses the access constraint; it does not guarantee that every package will run well on the resources you select.

3. You need server-level access or isolation
Development teams sometimes require SSH automation, custom deployment agents, private services or reproducible system configuration. A store or application that handles several independent workloads may also need clearer resource boundaries. Those are architectural requirements rather than performance complaints, and they justify a VPS even when a shared site still loads quickly.
4. Traffic spikes cause user-visible failures
Look for time-correlated slow pages, 5xx errors, timeouts or unavailable checkout during campaigns, launches or news coverage. Correlate application logs with traffic, CPU and database measurements before purchasing. A badly optimized query, oversized image or external API delay can create the same symptom and will remain on a VPS until fixed.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
5. Database and checkout operations are consistently slow
Measure query duration, connection wait time and PHP or application execution time. If storage latency, memory pressure or connection ceilings are the bottleneck, an allocated VPS may help. If the database design or code is inefficient, migration alone will not produce a reliable improvement; tune the workload as part of the move.
6. Downtime is tied to noisy neighbors or account throttling
Keep an incident log with UTC timestamps, status codes and host notifications. Repeated events that support attributes to shared-server contention are a stronger upgrade case than an isolated outage. Also verify DNS, certificates, application errors and third-party dependencies so that a hosting change addresses the actual failure.

How to verify that shared hosting is the problem
- Collect a baseline. Record page response times, error rates, database timings, traffic, storage use and the host’s CPU or memory readings for at least several representative busy periods.
- Separate application from platform symptoms. Enable application logging, inspect slow queries, review scheduled jobs and test external APIs. A platform move cannot correct a coding error or an overloaded third-party service.
- Read the plan limits. Check process, memory, CPU, inode, database-connection and backup policies, including whether limits are hard caps or burst allowances.
- Ask support targeted questions. Request the exact metric, threshold, timestamps and recommended remedy. Keep the response with your incident records.
- Estimate the next workload. Include normal traffic, campaign peaks, administrative jobs, backups and staging environments. Choose resources for measured demand, with headroom, rather than copying another site’s specification.
What changes after moving to a VPS?
Capacity becomes a design choice
You select a resource allocation instead of accepting a shared account’s fixed ceilings. More vCPU does not automatically speed up a single-threaded task, and extra RAM cannot repair inefficient queries. Match resources to the workload: memory for database and application caches, CPU for concurrent computation, and storage capacity and performance for files, logs and databases.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteAdministration becomes your responsibility
Prepare an operating-system update policy, SSH-key process, firewall rules, least-privilege users, log rotation, monitoring, backups and a tested restore procedure. Decide who receives alerts and who can respond during an incident. If your team cannot perform these tasks, price a managed service or retain the shared plan until the operational gap is solved.
Migration introduces its own failure points
- Lower the DNS time-to-live ahead of the change if your DNS provider allows it.
- Create the VPS, apply updates, configure a firewall and disable password-based SSH where practical.
- Install the web server, runtime, database and application dependencies at the versions your application supports.
- Copy files and databases, preserving ownership, permissions, scheduled jobs and environment variables.
- Test the site through a temporary hostname or hosts-file override. Exercise login, forms, uploads, email, payments, cron jobs and administrative functions.
- Take a fresh backup and document a rollback. Keep the shared site intact until the new server is verified.
- Change DNS, monitor logs and key transactions, then remove the old environment only after the agreed observation period.
Security, compliance and isolation
Isolation is not the same as compliance
A VPS can provide a clearer boundary than a shared account, but buying one does not make a merchant compliant with the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS). Your obligations depend on how cardholder data is handled, which systems are in scope and whether the hosting company is acting as a multi-tenant service provider.
What PCI DSS Appendix A1 covers
The PCI Security Standards Council says Appendix A1 applies to multi-tenant service providers whose customers use shared services environments; it is not intended for all or most third-party service providers. Examples include hosting multiple entities on one shared server and web-based hosting services. PCI DSS version 3.2.1 called this section “Additional PCI DSS Requirements for Shared Hosting Providers”; version 4.0 retitled it “Additional PCI DSS Requirements for Multi-Tenant Service Providers.”
Best Value
Secondary summaries of PCI DSS 4.0 describe logical separation of customer environments and confirmation of that separation through penetration testing every six months for providers within Appendix A1’s scope. Confirm the current requirement in the PCI DSS v4.0.1 documentation and obtain the provider’s compliance evidence. Your own payment architecture and assessment still determine merchant scope.
Questions to ask a host
- Is the service classified as a multi-tenant service provider for the services you will use?
- Which operating-system, hypervisor and physical-security controls are included?
- What backups, retention periods, restoration tests and incident-notification terms are provided?
- Which controls remain your responsibility under the shared-responsibility model?
Cost and staffing decisions
Shared hosting is normally cheaper because one managed platform serves many accounts and spreads administration across customers. VPS hosting costs more in exchange for allocated resources and control, but there is no reliable universal monthly range: location, storage type, support level, backup capacity and licensing all change the total. Add the value of engineering time, monitoring, security work and recovery testing to any price comparison.
Choose self-managed VPS only when someone can maintain it during the hours your site matters. A managed VPS can shift routine work to a provider, but confirm what is covered, whether application troubleshooting is included and how emergency changes are authorized.
When a VPS is still not enough
Consider dedicated hosting when measured demand requires sustained use of an entire machine, strict physical isolation, guaranteed hardware characteristics or controls that virtualization cannot satisfy. Dedicated infrastructure costs and administrative effort are higher. Do not jump to it merely because a shared account had one short incident; establish sustained load or a documented compliance or hardware requirement first.
A decision framework
- Stay on shared hosting when traffic is modest, the application fits the supported software stack, performance meets your service target and you do not need server administration.
- Try a larger shared tier first when the host identifies a simple account limit and your software needs no custom system access. Confirm the new limits and renewal terms.
- Move to a VPS when resource warnings persist, custom software or root/SSH access is required, or measured spikes and database workloads exceed the shared environment.
- Use managed VPS when a VPS is technically appropriate but your team cannot reliably patch, secure, monitor and restore it.
- Evaluate dedicated hosting only for sustained capacity, hardware or isolation requirements that a properly sized VPS cannot meet.
The correct upgrade point is the first moment a documented requirement exceeds what the shared plan can provide and the organization is prepared to operate the next layer. Measure the constraint, choose the least complex service that removes it, and plan maintenance and rollback before changing DNS.
