The Organization of American States (OAS) describes the practice as fraud and unauthorized access—not ordinary satellite signal reception.
What does satellite key sharing mean?
In subscription television, Satellite Key Sharing (SKS)—also called “Data Sharing via Satellite”—means sending shared key information through satellite so another user can access encrypted TV content without authorization. The OAS manual defines SKS as a technique that lets users share the rights of a smart card. The manual’s chapter says it was prepared using information provided by Nagra.

A smart card is part of the access-control system used by some subscription-TV services. SKS concerns sharing information tied to that access; it does not mean simply receiving a satellite broadcast with a dish.

How is SKS different from IKS?
Internet Key Sharing (IKS) is the related method that uses an internet-accessible server to distribute shared key information. SKS uses satellite distribution instead. Both terms refer to unauthorized access methods in the OAS manual’s discussion of subscription television.

| Term | How key information is distributed | Context in the OAS manual |
|---|---|---|
| SKS (Satellite Key Sharing) | Via satellite | Unauthorized sharing of subscription-TV access rights |
| IKS (Internet Key Sharing) | Through an internet-accessible server | Related unauthorized sharing method |
Is SKS ordinary satellite reception?
No. Receiving a satellite signal is not, by itself, key sharing. SKS refers specifically to distributing access information so that someone can view encrypted subscription content without authorization. The distinction is between receiving a broadcast and sharing credentials or related access rights.
Is satellite key sharing legal?
The OAS manual characterizes the described SKS use as fraud and unauthorized access, but that definition does not establish a universal legal penalty or settle how a particular jurisdiction treats every related device or act. Applicable law depends on location and circumstances; do not infer a specific fine or criminal consequence from the manual alone.

Marketplace rules are separate from law. For example, Mercado Libre Argentina’s policy prohibits products or components that enable card sharing, IKS, or SKS. That is a restriction on that marketplace in Argentina, not a statement of worldwide law.
What should viewers use instead?
For access to encrypted subscription channels, use a service’s authorized subscription and compatible equipment. This article does not recommend receivers or components intended to enable SKS or IKS.
