Sarin, also called GB, is a human-made chemical warfare nerve agent that disrupts the nervous system. It can be present as a liquid or vapor and may cause effects ranging from breathing problems and muscle weakness to seizures, respiratory failure, and death. If exposure is suspected, get away from the area, get clean, and get help; follow local authorities’ instructions.
What is sarin?
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) defines sarin as “a human-made chemical warfare nerve agent.” It is also known as GB, belongs to the G-series of nerve agents, and has CAS registry number 107-44-8. The CDC says sarin is clear, colorless, tasteless, and has no smell. It can evaporate into vapor, but appearance or smell cannot establish whether a place or object is safe.

Sarin is not a consumer chemical. Its significance is as a toxic chemical warfare agent, not as a substance to identify or handle. The Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) describes nerve agents as chemicals that inhibit acetylcholinesterase, an enzyme involved in normal nervous-system signaling. The result can be excessive stimulation of muscles, glands, and other nerves.
How can exposure happen, and when do effects appear?
Exposure may occur by breathing sarin vapor, through skin or eye contact, or by swallowing it. Contaminated food, water, or clothing can also be sources of exposure. The route, amount, and duration all affect the effects and when they begin.

According to the CDC, symptoms after lower or medium exposure may develop within seconds to hours. The CDC/NIOSH Emergency Response Safety and Health Database notes that mild to moderate skin effects can be delayed for up to 18 hours. No immediate symptoms do not prove that exposure has not occurred or that an area is safe.
What are the signs and symptoms?
Possible effects include:
- Pinpoint pupils, blurred vision, eye pain, or tearing
- Runny nose, drooling, or sweating
- Chest tightness or difficulty breathing
- Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or abdominal pain
- Muscle cramps, weakness, or tremors
- Confusion or changes in heart rate or blood pressure
Large exposures can lead to loss of consciousness, convulsions, seizures, paralysis, respiratory failure, cardiac arrest, or death. These effects are not a do-it-yourself diagnostic checklist; suspected exposure needs urgent professional assessment.

What should you do after suspected exposure?
Follow instructions from local authorities and emergency responders. Do not approach a suspected release, contaminated material, or response area. The CDC’s public guidance is to get away from the area and breathe fresh air, get clean, and get medical help. Its fact sheet provides detailed decontamination directions; follow that guidance rather than improvising:

- Contact emergency services or seek medical care as directed by local authorities. Tell responders that sarin exposure is suspected, if known.
- Leave treatment and protective-equipment decisions to trained emergency personnel and clinicians. Do not attempt self-treatment or treat consumer protective equipment as a substitute for emergency response.
CDC says treatment includes removing sarin from the body as soon as possible and providing supportive medical care. Antidotes are available in healthcare settings and are most useful when given as soon as possible; decisions about their use and administration belong with trained professionals.

How does sarin compare with other nerve agents?
Classification and persistence are useful for understanding the broad differences OPCW describes, but they cannot predict conditions at a specific site. OPCW says some G-series agents, including sarin, persist for shorter periods than soman or cyclosarin, while V-series agents are described as persistent.

NIOSH’s guidance on Level A protection and CBRN self-contained breathing apparatus concerns trained first responders working in unknown contaminant conditions. Protective-equipment selection depends on monitoring and training; that guidance is not a consumer equipment recommendation.

Why is sarin an international concern?
The Chemical Weapons Convention is a multilateral disarmament agreement intended to eliminate an entire category of weapons and prevent their re-emergence. Sarin’s classification as a G-series nerve agent places it within the broader chemical-weapons issue addressed by the Convention.

The same account gave a combined death toll of 19 for the 1994 Matsumoto and 1995 Tokyo incidents. These figures refer to different scopes: one is for Tokyo, and the other combines both incidents.
