For a YouTube Live stream, use the RTMPS server URL from YouTube Studio and your stream key in an encoder that supports RTMPS. YouTube recommends RTMPS for live ingestion; the encryption protects stream data in transit, but it does not protect a leaked stream key or secure your computer.
What RTMPS means—and what it protects
YouTube describes RTMPS as “RTMP over a Transport Layer Security (TLS/SSL) connection” that “provides encryption.” (YouTube Help: Encrypt your stream using RTMPS) RTMP is the streaming protocol; the added TLS/SSL connection encrypts data as it travels to and through Google’s servers.

This is transport encryption, not end-to-end confidentiality. It does not make an exposed stream key safe, protect the encoder or computer from compromise, or prevent viewers from seeing a stream that is meant to be public. Treat your stream key like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to your channel.
What you need before connecting
- An encoder—software is sufficient if it supports RTMPS. A YouTube preset can simplify setup, but you can also enter the server URL and key manually.
- The RTMPS URL and stream key for the specific YouTube stream, obtained in Live Control Room.
- A reliable upload connection and encoder settings compatible with your chosen resolution, frame rate, and YouTube’s current guidance.
YouTube also describes professional-grade hardware encoders as an option for higher-production events; a new device is not automatically necessary for ordinary streaming. If considering hardware, verify explicit YouTube RTMPS support and that its inputs and output settings meet your needs. (YouTube Help: Get started with live streaming)

How to set up RTMPS for YouTube Live
- Check encoder support. Update the encoder and look for a built-in YouTube RTMPS preset. If available, select it; you may still need to provide the stream key. If there is no preset, use manual setup only if the encoder supports RTMPS.
- Get the RTMPS URL in YouTube Studio. Open YouTube Studio, enter Live Control Room, and select the Stream tab, or open a scheduled stream. Under Stream settings, use the lock icon next to Stream URL to reveal the RTMPS address. YouTube may display an ordinary RTMP URL by default, so confirm that the address begins with
rtmps://before copying it. (YouTube Help: Encrypt your stream using RTMPS) - Copy the stream key. In Live Control Room, copy the key associated with that stream. Keep it private; do not include it in screenshots, public messages, or shared configuration.
- Enter both values in the encoder. Paste the RTMPS URL into the server, URL, or ingestion-address field and the stream key into the separate key field. Field names vary by encoder. If using a preset, check that it is actually using RTMPS rather than assuming that “YouTube” alone means the connection is encrypted.
- Configure and start the encoder. Use settings supported by both the encoder and YouTube. YouTube recommends CBR bitrate encoding and a two-second keyframe interval, with a maximum interval of four seconds. Choose the bitrate from YouTube’s current resolution-specific guidance rather than applying one generic number to every stream. Its guidance lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 video options and AAC or MP3 audio options; actual choices depend on encoder capabilities and workflow. (YouTube Help: Live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions)
- Verify the feed before going live. For a scheduled broadcast, wait for the encoder preview to appear in Live Control Room, check audio and video, and review stream health. When ready, select Go live in Live Control Room. Continue monitoring the feed during the event. (YouTube Help: Live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions)
Choose RTMPS or a different YouTube ingestion workflow
For a standard YouTube Live setup, RTMPS is the recommended encrypted RTMP option. HLS is a separate ingestion protocol, not another name for RTMPS; changing an RTMPS URL does not convert an encoder’s output to HLS. YouTube points to HLS for HDR workflows and codecs that RTMP does not support. If your production requires HDR or an RTMP-unsupported codec, follow YouTube’s HLS-specific setup and stream-key requirements instead of changing only the server address. (YouTube Help: Live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions; YouTube Help: Live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions)
Fix common RTMPS connection problems
| Symptom | What to check | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| SSL certificate error | The protocol or server address may be wrong; a plain rtmp:// URL is not the RTMPS URL. |
Copy the RTMPS URL again from Live Control Room and confirm it uses rtmps://. YouTube says both the protocol and server must be correct. (YouTube Help) |
| Connection timeout | The URL may be incorrect, or the encoder may not support RTMPS. | Verify the address and encoder support. If the URL appears correct but an SSL error persists, YouTube suggests specifying port 443 in the URL or encoder settings. Use the actual server address YouTube provides; do not copy an illustrative example host as a fixed endpoint. (YouTube Help) |
| No RTMPS preset | A preset is convenient but not required; protocol support is. | Enter the RTMPS URL and key manually if the encoder supports the protocol. If it does not, consult its documentation or use a compatible encoder. An RTMP-only connection should not be treated as encrypted RTMPS. |
| Encoder connects, but stream quality or stability is poor | Upload capacity, bitrate, resolution, motion, and audio all affect the result. | Check upload capacity with a speed test, test with representative audio and movement, review the Live Control Room preview, and monitor stream health. Recheck YouTube’s current bitrate guidance for your resolution rather than relying on a one-size-fits-all setting. (YouTube Help) |
| The wrong feed appears or a key may have been exposed | The key identifies the feed accepted by YouTube and should be kept secret. | Confirm the encoder has the key for the intended stream. If the key may have been shared or exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and replace the key in the encoder. (YouTube Help: Get started with live streaming) |
