RTMP is a protocol an encoder can use to send a live audio-and-video feed to YouTube. To go live, you need an encoder, a YouTube stream URL and stream key, and a connection that can sustain your chosen settings. YouTube recommends the encrypted version, RTMPS. Once YouTube receives the feed, it converts it into playback formats for viewers.
What RTMP means in a YouTube Live setup
RTMP stands for Real-Time Messaging Protocol. For a YouTube broadcast, it describes the connection used to deliver the encoder’s live feed to YouTube’s ingest service. It is not the camera, the encoder, or the player viewers use.

The practical chain is: camera or other video source → encoder → RTMP or RTMPS connection → YouTube. YouTube then processes the incoming feed and makes versions available for viewers on different devices and network conditions. The settings you send to YouTube are therefore not necessarily the format every viewer receives.
What you need before streaming
- A video and audio source, such as a camera and microphone, if your production uses them.
- An encoder that can send a YouTube-compatible feed. It may be software or hardware; YouTube does not require one particular product.
- A stream URL and stream key from YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room.
- A sufficiently reliable upload connection for the resolution, frame rate, and bitrate you select.
How to send an RTMP stream to YouTube
- Create or select the stream: In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create a stream or select an existing one. Find its server or stream URL and stream key in the stream settings.
- Configure the encoder: Choose YouTube if it is listed as a destination, or enter the URL and key in the encoder’s server and stream-key fields. Select RTMPS when supported, then set the video and audio output to formats supported by YouTube.
- Start the encoder output: Begin sending the feed and wait for the preview and stream-health information in Live Control Room. When your workflow requires it, start the broadcast in Live Control Room after the feed appears.
- Check the actual production: Before an important event, test representative motion and audio. Confirm that the preview is present, sound is audible, and stream health is acceptable.
- Let YouTube prepare playback: YouTube receives the feed and transcodes it into multiple output formats for viewers.
RTMP or RTMPS: which should you choose?
Choose RTMPS if your encoder supports it. YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension of RTMP, and says the stream data is encrypted into and through Google’s servers. Ordinary RTMP does not provide that secure extension. If your encoder does not offer RTMPS, check its supported protocols and the options available in YouTube’s setup workflow rather than assuming compatibility.

Whichever protocol you use, treat the stream key as a secret. YouTube describes it as password-like information that helps identify and accept the encoder feed. Do not share it or include it in a public screenshot. If it may have been exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and replace the stored value in your encoder.
Choose video and audio settings that fit your connection
YouTube’s current encoder-settings guide lists RTMP/RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 video, up to 60 frames per second, AAC or MP3 audio, and constant bitrate (CBR) encoding. The same guide recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Consult YouTube’s live bitrate table for the codec, resolution, and frame-rate combination you intend to send: there is no single bitrate that fits every stream.

As examples from YouTube’s current guide, checked on October 3, 2026, the recommendation for H.264 is 10 Mbps at 1080p/30 fps and 14 Mbps at 1080p/60 fps. These are platform recommendations, not independent test results, and YouTube’s guide does not display a publication date. Check the live table before configuring a broadcast because the guidance can change.

When HLS may be a better fit
RTMP is not the only ingest option in every YouTube workflow. YouTube documents HLS for HDR or codecs that RTMP does not support. HLS sends video in segments, so YouTube describes it as higher latency than RTMP’s continuous stream. Consider HLS when your HDR or codec requirements call for it and your production can tolerate the added latency; otherwise, use a protocol and codec your encoder supports and that fits the event.
HDR viewing also depends on compatible devices and display settings. YouTube notes that Live Control Room’s preview does not show HDR colors, so do not use that preview alone to judge how HDR will appear to viewers.

Troubleshoot common RTMP problems
| Symptom | Likely checks and fixes |

| No incoming preview in Live Control Room | Confirm the encoder is actively sending, the URL and key match the selected stream, and the encoder is using a supported protocol. If the key may have been exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder. |
| Unstable feed or poor picture | Check upload capacity and stream health. Reduce resolution, frame rate, or bitrate to a combination your connection can sustain, and use YouTube’s current bitrate table for the selected codec. |
| No audio or an incompatible feed | Check the encoder’s output codecs against YouTube’s current settings guidance. Confirm the correct audio source is selected and test sound in a representative preview. |

Can viewers watch the RTMP feed directly?
No. RTMP is used to deliver the feed to YouTube. YouTube prepares viewer playback formats from the incoming stream.
Do I need a paid encoder to use RTMP?
You need an encoder that supports a YouTube-compatible workflow, but YouTube’s documentation does not prescribe a particular paid encoder.
