Rspack is a JavaScript bundler written in Rust, built to work with the webpack API and ecosystem. In its August 28, 2024 launch announcement, the Rspack Team described version 1.0 as production-ready and a stable foundation for integrations—while noting that some designs could still need refinement. That makes the release a meaningful option for webpack projects, not a guarantee of effortless, change-free migration.
What is Rspack?
Rspack combines a Rust implementation with a JavaScript-facing bundler API designed around webpack compatibility. Its goal is to let teams use a faster build tool without giving up the configurations and ecosystem they already rely on. The Rspack Team called it “a next-generation JavaScript bundler written in Rust, compatible with the webpack API and ecosystem, and is 10 times faster than webpack” in its August 28, 2024 announcement. That speed figure is the team’s launch claim, not an independently established result for every project.

Rspack began as an open-source 0.1 release. According to the team, version 1.0 was intended to provide a stable base for integrations and help existing webpack users migrate progressively. The release included stability improvements to configuration, the JavaScript API, and the plugin API. The project’s announcement also acknowledged that some designs might still need polishing.
How compatible is Rspack with webpack?
The 1.0 announcement describes compatibility with webpack v5 and reports that more than 80% of the 50 most-downloaded webpack plugins could either be used with Rspack or had an alternative. That is useful evidence of ecosystem coverage, but it does not mean every webpack plugin works unchanged or that every project can switch without adjustments.
#1 Best Overall
Compatibility should be checked against the specific loaders, plugins, configuration, and integrations a project uses. The percentage is a project-team claim from the 2024 launch announcement; it is not a guarantee for a particular application.
How should you read the speed claims?
Bytes issue #319, dated September 2, 2024, described Rspack as “over 20x faster than webpack 5.” The Rspack Team’s August 28 launch post instead said “10 times faster than webpack” and linked a benchmark comparing Rspack 0.1 with Rspack 1.0. These are separate claims from different publishers and should not be blended into a single benchmark result.
Rank #2
The available benchmark repository identifies a suite that covers Rspack, Rsbuild, webpack, Vite, Rolldown, esbuild, Parcel, and Farm, but its page does not establish the newsletter’s specific 20-times comparison. Neither launch-era figure should be treated as a current, universal performance result. For a migration decision, test the project’s own development and production workloads, then compare build times and output under the same conditions.

Which tool in Rstack fits which job?
Rstack, short for “Rspack Stack,” groups tools aimed at different stages of JavaScript development. The project describes the tools this way:
Rank #3
| Tool | Intended role |
|---|---|
| Rspack | JavaScript bundler |
| Rsbuild | Web application development with an out-of-the-box development experience |
| Rslib | Library builds, including ESM and CJS outputs |
| Rspress | Static sites and documentation |
| Rsdoctor | Build analysis |
These are distinct tools, not interchangeable names for the bundler. Choose according to whether you need a bundler, an application-development setup, library output, a documentation site, or build diagnostics.
Should a webpack project migrate?
Rspack 1.0 was presented as a route for gradual migration, but the right choice depends on the project rather than headline speed claims. Start by checking whether the integrations you depend on are supported, then evaluate the migration effort and the results on representative builds.
- Inventory compatibility: Identify the webpack plugins, loaders, configuration patterns, and external integrations your project actually uses. Verify the ones that matter rather than relying on ecosystem-wide percentages.
- Measure representative work: Compare development and production builds on the same project and conditions. Include output quality and the effect on your development workflow, not just a single build-time number.
- Estimate migration cost: Record configuration changes, replacements for unsupported integrations, and the work needed to validate the result. A tool’s compatibility with webpack’s API can reduce friction without removing it.
- Check the starting version: The Rspack Team says migrations from Rspack 0.7 or earlier to 1.0 include breaking changes and directs users to migration documentation. That warning concerns Rspack upgrades, distinct from moving an existing webpack project.
The launch announcement also reported more than 100,000 weekly npm downloads in 2024. That is a historical launch-era figure, not a current adoption count or evidence of present-day performance.

The September 2, 2024 issue included a short introduction to JavaScript generators, a humorous Laravel reference, and a “Spot the Bug” example showing an invalid asynchronous constructor. JavaScript does not allow an async constructor. The issue’s solution moves asynchronous work into a static async initializer, then passes the fetched data to a regular constructor. These are lighter newsletter items separate from the Rspack feature.
