Ripple USD (RLUSD) is a U.S. dollar stablecoin issued by Ripple and designed to be worth $1. Ripple says each token is backed one-to-one by cash and short-term liquid reserve assets, with monthly independent attestations. RLUSD is not XRP: RLUSD targets a dollar value, while XRP is a cryptocurrency whose price changes with the market.
That target does not guarantee RLUSD will trade at exactly $1 everywhere, or that every holder can redeem directly with Ripple. Access depends on the country, platform, and whether the user is an eligible institutional customer.

How RLUSD is designed to keep a one-dollar value
Ripple describes RLUSD as a token intended to maintain a value of one U.S. dollar. Its stated design pairs each token with one dollar’s worth of permitted reserve assets held in segregated accounts. That is the issuer’s backing model, not a promise that every exchange or trading pair will quote the token at precisely $1 at every moment.
Market prices can move away from a target because of trading conditions, liquidity, or access to redemption. The peg design and reserve backing are relevant to value, but they do not eliminate issuer, custody, operational, market, or redemption risks.

What backs RLUSD, and what attestations establish
Ripple says RLUSD reserves may include cash deposits, short-maturity U.S. Treasury bills, government money market funds, qualifying overnight reverse repos, and bank deposits. The reserves are described as segregated from other funds. Ripple’s RLUSD overview explains the stated reserve model.
Ripple says an independent CPA provides monthly attestations concerning management’s assertions about circulating supply and reserve composition, following AICPA attestation standards. An attestation is not the same as an unlimited guarantee or a blanket audit of every aspect of the issuer, and it does not make redemption instantaneous or risk-free. Ripple’s transparency dashboard reported $2,460.7 million in circulating RLUSD and $2,602.9 million in reserve funds as of October 8, 2026. These are dated balances, not figures that should be treated as current indefinitely. Ripple says reserve reports are monthly and made available no more than 30 days after month-end.
Ripple’s product page also displays “103%” overcollateralized, but the cited passage does not state an as-of date or calculation method. Dividing the dashboard’s October 8, 2026 reserve balance by circulating supply gives about 105.8%; Ripple’s cited materials do not explain how that calculation relates to the product-page figure. The two figures should not be treated as interchangeable. See the transparency dashboard and product page.

How RLUSD is issued and redeemed
Institutional issuance
Ripple’s documented institutional process starts when a customer deposits U.S. dollars into a transaction account. Ripple conducts customer and wallet compliance checks, moves funds into the reserve account, mints RLUSD, and transfers the tokens to the customer’s wallet.
Institutional redemption
For redemption, a customer sends RLUSD on-chain to Ripple’s redemption wallet. Ripple detects the transfer, performs compliance checks, burns the tokens, and settles fiat to the customer’s bank account. This describes Ripple’s institutional process; it does not establish that every retail holder can redeem directly with Ripple on the same terms.

Retail access
Retail users generally access RLUSD through exchanges or preferred on-ramps where it is available. Ripple identifies enterprise institutions as direct customers, subject to KYC/AML checks and sanctions screening. Check the service’s own terms and supported regions rather than assuming that buying RLUSD on a platform gives you a direct issuer redemption route.

Holding RLUSD is therefore not the same as holding XRP. RLUSD aims to provide dollar-denominated value on supported blockchain networks; XRP’s market value can rise or fall independently.

Which networks support RLUSD
Ripple lists RLUSD on seven networks: XRP Ledger (XRPL), Ethereum, Base, Ink, Optimism, Unichain, and the XRPL EVM sidechain. On XRPL, RLUSD uses the ledger’s issued-token format; on the listed EVM networks, it is an ERC-20 token. Ripple’s product overview links to its network information.
A token on one network is not automatically interchangeable with a transfer on another. Before sending, confirm that the receiving wallet or service supports both RLUSD and the selected network, and verify the destination details in that service’s instructions. Ripple distinguishes mainnet tokens, which have real-world value and reserve backing, from testnet tokens, which have no financial value and are not backed by real-world assets. Use Ripple’s official token-address documentation rather than copying an address from an unrelated source.
Availability, regulation, and custody
RLUSD is not available on the same terms everywhere. Ripple says availability depends on jurisdiction. It announced on November 27, 2025, that the Abu Dhabi Global Market Financial Services Regulatory Authority (ADGM FSRA) recognized RLUSD as an Accepted Fiat-Referenced Token. Ripple says that status applies to eligible authorized persons using it in applicable regulated activities, subject to their regulatory obligations; it is not evidence of unrestricted global availability. Ripple’s announcement describes the recognition.
Ripple identifies Standard Custody & Trust Company, LLC as a New York limited purpose trust company supervised by the New York Department of Financial Services. That description does not settle the legal treatment or availability of RLUSD in every country; users should check local rules and the specific platform’s eligibility requirements.
Wallet custody also affects who controls access. In a hosted wallet, a provider manages the keys; in an unhosted wallet, the user is responsible for them. Ripple lists Ledger and Trezor compatibility for RLUSD on XRPL and Ethereum, but support depends on the exact device and network. Losing a private key can mean losing access to the assets. What to check before buying or transferring RLUSD
- Confirm that the exchange, on-ramp, or wallet supports RLUSD in your jurisdiction.
- Check whether you are using XRPL or one of the supported EVM networks, and make sure the receiving service supports that same network.
- Understand how you would sell or redeem the token. A retail exchange sale and direct institutional redemption are different routes.
- Review the issuer’s latest reserve reporting and its date rather than relying on an older balance or an undated percentage.
- If using an unhosted wallet, secure the private keys and recovery material; the provider cannot restore access to keys it does not control.
