Real-time highway data is current or near-current information about traffic and travel conditions on highways. It can include measured speeds and vehicle counts, estimated travel times, and reported incidents, closures, construction or roadway weather. It is not a particular sensor or app—and “real-time” does not mean instantaneous: update targets vary by information type, road and service.
What real-time highway data means
In U.S. transportation, the term describes information about current or near-current highway conditions that is collected and shared so agencies can manage roads and travelers can make decisions. The underlying traffic data may describe the movement and behavior of people, vehicles, bicycles and goods across transportation networks. The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) characterizes traveler-information systems as providing “real-time or near-real-time updates” on traffic conditions, incidents, speed and travel time: FHWA traveler information overview.

A data item might be a direct sensor reading, an agency-reported event or an estimate calculated from observations. For example, travel time is the time a vehicle takes to travel between two points along a roadway, as defined in the FHWA 2022 Traffic Monitoring Guide.

What information it can include
Available fields depend on the agency, jurisdiction, road network, collection systems and service. No individual feed should be assumed to carry every category.
#1 Best Overall
- Bright, high-resolution 5” glass capacitive touchscreen display lets you easily view your route
- Get more situational awareness with alerts for school zones, speed changes, sharp curves and more
- View food, fuel and rest areas along your active route, and see upcoming cities and milestones
- View Tripadvisor traveler ratings for top-rated restaurants, hotels and attractions to help you make the most of road trips
- Directory of U.S. national parks simplifies navigation to entrances, visitor centers and landmarks within the parks
- Speed and travel time: vehicle speed or estimated time to cover a road segment.
- Traffic volume: counts of vehicles passing a point or segment over a period.
- Incidents and events: crashes and other events that disrupt flow; some program information focuses on incidents blocking a roadway or lane.
- Construction and closures: work and lane or roadway closures that affect travel.
- Roadway weather: observations relevant to highway conditions.
- Other traveler information: some 511 services also include transit or event information.
FHWA describes traffic-data measures and sources in its Traffic Monitoring Guide; 511 services can include information beyond road conditions, as outlined in its traveler-information overview.
Where live highway information comes from
Collection and delivery are separate stages. An agency or data provider gathers observations, processes them into readings or estimates, and may then publish them through a traveler-information service.

Roadside equipment and other observations
FHWA identifies roadway and roadside sensors, vehicle or traveler navigation and communications devices, and surveys as sources of traffic data. A probe vehicle uses onboard sensors or communications devices to collect traffic or roadway observations as it travels. Probe data can support segment travel-time estimates without specialized highway-agency equipment installed on every segment. See the FHWA Traffic Monitoring Guide.
How information reaches travelers
Agencies may use data in operations and incident-management systems, then distribute it through 511 phone and web services, agency websites, apps, in-vehicle navigation or roadside dynamic message signs. They may also exchange data with other public agencies and private organizations that create information products. The FHWA describes these channels in its 511 overview and 511 deployment guidance.

What “real-time” means in practice
There is no single universal number of seconds or minutes that makes highway data “real-time.” A reading can describe a recent condition yet arrive after a delay, and different information types may have different update and delivery targets. The term is best understood as current or near-current information, with its usefulness depending on how quickly it is observed, processed and made available.
In the United States, FHWA’s Real-Time System Management Information Program (RTSMIP) guidance describes requirements under 23 CFR Part 511 for specified traffic and travel-condition information. It does not prescribe one technology or distribution method. Its delivery windows are program-specific, not a global definition or a guarantee for every app or feed. The FHWA guidance specifies:

| Information category and road context | Specified timeline |
|---|---|
| Construction and lane-blocking incident information on statewide Interstates | 20 minutes |
| Construction and lane-blocking incident information on limited-access roads in metropolitan areas | 10 minutes |
| Roadway weather observations in the specified program contexts | 20 minutes |
| Travel-time or speed information on limited-access roads in metropolitan areas | 10 minutes |
These are service thresholds for the categories and road contexts listed in the FHWA RTSMIP Data Exchange Format Specification guidance. The guidance also associates the categories with availability and accuracy service levels; the delivery windows should not be read as a promise that every public or private service updates that often.
How to judge a real-time highway feed
A “live” label alone does not tell you whether a feed is useful for a particular trip. Check these dimensions, which FHWA’s 511 data-quality white paper treats separately:

- Freshness: When was the condition observed or event reported, and when did it become available to users? A display or update timestamp may not be the observation time.
- Accuracy: Do speed and travel-time estimates, locations and incident details match conditions on the road?
- Coverage: Which roads, directions, lanes and segments are represented? A nearby highway may have better coverage than a smaller connecting road.
- Availability: How often is useful information accessible for the particular segment?
- Verification: Are incident reports checked before publication, and is their status updated as details change?
- Meaning and provenance: Is a value directly measured, derived from probe observations, reported by an agency or predicted from other data?
The FHWA white paper discusses these quality dimensions and includes examples that are historical recommendations, not current universal guarantees: 511 Data Quality White Paper.
Why one app may differ from another
Different services can use different sources, cover different roads and publish different kinds of information. A speed may be measured or estimated; an incident may be an initial report awaiting verification; and a feed may omit a road or lane entirely. Because collection, processing, coverage and delivery vary, two services can show different conditions without either one representing a guaranteed instantaneous view of the whole highway network.
For a U.S. route, compare a service’s timestamps and coverage with the relevant state or local 511 service when available. Outside the United States, check the local transport authority’s definitions, road coverage and service targets: the federal program details above apply to the U.S. context.
