RCA stereo audio is two-channel analog sound carried through a pair of RCA connectors: one for the left channel and one for the right. Red conventionally marks right and white marks left, but port labels and the device manual take precedence over color.
What “RCA stereo audio” means
RCA is the familiar round plug-and-jack connector used on consumer equipment. In a stereo audio connection, two RCA connections work as a pair, carrying separate left and right analog audio signals. Buffalo explains the connector and paired signals in its RCA connection guide.

“Stereo” describes the two-channel arrangement, and “analog” describes the signal. The connector shape alone does not tell you what a port does: RCA sockets may serve different signal roles, including analog audio, PHONO, video, or digital coaxial audio. Yamaha lists these as distinct connection types in its receiver connection guide.

Which RCA cable is left and which is right?
In common consumer stereo wiring, red is right (R) and white is left (L). Audio-Technica gives that mapping for a turntable cable in its turntable connection instructions; Garmin also identifies red and white RCA connectors for stereo input and output in its equipment manual.

- IN THE BOX: (1) 4 foot 2-Male to 2-Male RCA audio stereo subwoofer cable
- CRYSTAL CLEAR AUDIO: Enhances audio connections; ideal for home-entertainment and high-fidelity (HiFi) systems
- RCA INPUT/OUTPUT: 2 RCA output (connect to either L or R input) and 2 RCA input; input can be high frequency (digital audio) or low frequency (subwoofer)
- GOLD PLATED CONNECTORS: Corrosion-resistant 24K gold-plated full-metal connectors
- RELIABLE PERFORMANCE: Eliminates unwanted noise/feedback for pure, clear audio; minimal signal loss for reliably consistent audio
Connect left to left and right to right. If the cable colors differ or the equipment labels its sockets differently, follow the L and R markings and the manual rather than guessing.
What can RCA stereo audio connect?
A common setup connects a source’s analog stereo output to a receiver, amplifier, or other device’s matching stereo audio input. Yamaha lists analog AUDIO RCA inputs for sources such as CD players. Audio-Technica describes connecting a turntable’s RCA cable to an amplifier, receiver, active speakers, or a sound card. Garmin’s manual describes paired RCA stereo line input for sources such as CD or MP3 players and paired full-range line output to an external amplifier.

- Durable PVC Jacket: The black PVC jacket provides excellent protection and flexibility for the cable, resisting wear and tear.
- Gold-Plated Connectors: The gold plating ensures optimal signal transfer and resists corrosion, resulting in a clear audio signal.
- Color-Coded Connectors: The red and silver white connector housings provide quick and easy identification for right (red) and left (silver white) audio channels.
- Molded Strain Relief : The molded strain relief boot provides protection to the cable where it separates, extending its life.
- Reliable Audio Transmission: This cable is designed for clear and accurate audio signal transfer, enhancing the audio experience.
The connection must match the signal direction: an output on the source feeds an input on the destination. A cable cannot turn an input into an output or change the signal type. If one device has a stereo mini-jack and the other has a pair of RCA ports, a compatible mini-jack-to-dual-RCA cable may connect them; confirm the ports and signal direction for both devices.

Many RCA audio ports carry analog line-level audio, but check the labels and manuals rather than assuming every RCA socket does. A line output can feed compatible powered speakers or an appropriate stereo-system input. It does not directly power passive, unpowered speakers; they need an amplifier or receiver’s speaker output. The equipment manual describing the line-level RCA jacks also warns that direct connection to passive speakers produces very low volume.

- Unparalleled: Connect your analog or digital audio kit thanks to this RCA/phono cable’s 75 ohm impedance, making it superior to other coax cables that can only handle analog signals
- High-end: Transmit audio signals in excellent quality and enjoy clear, flawless sound without signal loss thanks to this RCA/phono cable with dual RCA/phono connectors (male to male, 2 to 2) and gold-plated connectors
- Interference-free: A PVC jacket protects the high-purity copper conductors of this coax cable – while the double-layer screening comprising aluminum-Mylar foil and tightly woven copper braiding protects against electromagnetic interference
- High-quality: CableDirect RCA/phono cables are put through strict functionality tests and are designed for maximum durability. Unlike many other RCA/phono cables, the plugs are surrounded by break-proof metal sleeves for incredible longevity
- No risk: 36 months manufacturer warranty
A PHONO input is not an ordinary line input. Yamaha lists PHONO separately from its analog stereo RCA audio inputs and notes that a low-output moving-coil cartridge needs a boosting transformer with the receiver covered by that guide. Whether a turntable can connect directly to a line input depends on whether it has a built-in phono preamp and on the instructions for the connected equipment.
RCA stereo audio versus similar connections
- Mono subwoofer RCA: A single subwoofer connection is mono, not a left/right stereo pair. Garmin distinguishes its single mono subwoofer output from its stereo line outputs.
- Composite video: Yellow RCA is commonly used for video in an AV cable set. It is not a third stereo-audio channel; stereo audio remains the red/white pair where those colors are used.
- Digital coaxial audio: Some equipment uses an RCA-shaped connector for digital coaxial audio. Yamaha lists digital coaxial and analog stereo RCA as different connection choices, so identify the port by its label or manual, not shape alone.
- HDMI or optical audio: These are different connection types, not RCA stereo audio. Converting between formats may require an active converter; a passive cable alone does not necessarily perform that conversion.
How to choose the right cable
- Identify the source output and destination input. Match output to input, not output to output.
- Check the signal type. Connect a standard line output to a compatible line/audio input. Treat PHONO as a separate connection with its own requirements.
- Confirm the channel count. A stereo connection needs left and right; one subwoofer RCA connection is mono.
- Match the plugs to the ports. Use a dual-RCA stereo cable for paired RCA ports. If one device uses a stereo mini-jack, choose a compatible stereo mini-jack-to-dual-RCA cable or adapter.
- Check the speaker type. RCA line output can feed compatible powered speakers. Passive speakers require an amplifier or receiver.
- Follow port labels and manuals. Use L/R markings and connection instructions when colors or port names differ from the convention.
For a typical matching pair of stereo RCA ports, use a basic dual-RCA audio cable. Choose a mini-jack-to-dual-RCA cable only when the devices’ actual ports call for it. The connector definition alone does not establish that a more expensive cable improves sound.
