It wakes the screen; it does not necessarily unlock the phone.
What Raise to Wake does
When Raise to Wake is enabled, lifting the phone can bring the display on and show the lock screen, such as the time or notifications. Apple describes raising an iPhone as one way to wake it, and Xiaomi describes the feature similarly for its phones.

Waking the display and unlocking the phone are separate actions. Apple’s guidance is to tap or raise an iPhone to wake it, then glance at it to unlock with Face ID. The phone’s configured authentication still controls access.

How to find or switch the setting
On iPhone
Open Settings > Display & Brightness, then turn Raise to Wake on or off. Apple’s iPhone guide lists the setting and the available wake methods.

On Android
Android menu names and locations depend on the manufacturer and model. Xiaomi places the setting under Settings > Lock screen in its general instructions. HONOR advises searching Settings for Wake device or Raise to wake. If those paths do not match your phone, search Settings for “raise” or “wake,” or consult the manufacturer’s instructions.
Xiaomi’s instructions and HONOR’s support guidance show why the exact label and path can differ.

What happens when the phone is lifted?
The result is a lit display, not automatic access to everything on the phone. Depending on the device and its settings, the lock screen may show the time, notifications, or other lock-screen information. Xiaomi specifically says the REDMI Note 14 Pro uses its accelerometer for Raise to Wake and may display the lock screen, notifications, or time when raised; that sensor detail applies to that model’s documentation, not necessarily to every phone. Xiaomi’s REDMI Note 14 Pro FAQ describes the model-specific behavior.
Raise to Wake versus unlocking
Think of Raise to Wake as a convenient way to view the lock screen. A configured passcode, fingerprint, facial recognition, or other authentication step may still be required to unlock the device. On iPhone, Apple’s documented Face ID flow is to wake the screen and then look at the phone. Apple’s guide explains that sequence.
