Quantum interference occurs when probability amplitudes for different possible routes to the same outcome are added before a probability is calculated. The amplitudes can reinforce one another, making an outcome more likely, or cancel one another, making it less likely.
The double-slit experiment makes this rule visible: particles arrive as individual, localized detections, yet many detections build a striped interference pattern. The pattern changes when a physical measurement can reveal which slit each particle used.

The core idea: amplitudes combine before probabilities
In ordinary probability, mutually exclusive alternatives are often treated by adding their probabilities. If one route has probability P₁ and another has probability P₂, a straightforward calculation might use P₁ + P₂. Quantum mechanics uses a different intermediate quantity: a probability amplitude.

P = |φ₁ + φ₂|²
The absolute-square operation is crucial. When the amplitudes have compatible phases, the sum has a larger magnitude and the outcome is enhanced. When they have opposing phases, the sum can be smaller or even zero. The resulting pattern is called quantum interference.
This is not a claim that a microscopic object is simply a tiny classical wave. The amplitude is a mathematical quantity used to predict observed frequencies. Richard P. Feynman emphasized that familiar categories such as “wave” and “particle” do not provide a complete everyday picture of what happens at microscopic scales. The reliable statement is the amplitude rule and the experimentally tested distribution it predicts.
How the double-slit experiment reveals interference
The apparatus
A basic arrangement has three parts:
- A source emits electrons, photons or another type of quantum object.
- A barrier contains two narrow openings, usually called slits.
- A screen behind the barrier records where each object is detected.
The slits provide two alternative routes from the source to a location on the screen. The important condition is that no physical measurement distinguishes the route while the alternatives remain available. The amplitudes associated with the two routes then contribute to the same possible detection.

What appears on the screen
With both slits open and path information unavailable, the screen does not receive a uniform spread. It develops alternating regions of high and low detection probability: bright and dark bands for light, or corresponding high-count and low-count regions for electrons and other particles.
In the wave analogy used by OpenStax, contributions that arrive crest-to-crest or trough-to-trough reinforce one another. Contributions that arrive crest-to-trough cancel. The precise fringe angles depend on the wavelength associated with the quantum object and on the spacing between the slits. Changing either quantity changes the geometry of the pattern.
One event at a time, one pattern after many events
An individual electron does not spread across the screen as a visible stripe. The detector records one localized impact at a particular position. Repeating the experiment produces many such impacts, and their accumulated positions gradually trace the interference distribution.

The Institute of Physics describes this contrast directly: individual quanta are detected one at a time, while the collection of detections displays wave-like interference. The particles do not need to collide with one another to create the stripes. Each event is governed by the probability distribution produced by the available quantum alternatives.
Constructive and destructive interference
Constructive interference
At positions where the alternatives have phases that line up, their amplitudes add with a larger magnitude. The probability at those positions increases, creating a fringe or region with more detections. In a classical wave picture, this resembles two crests meeting or two troughs meeting.
Destructive interference
At other positions, the alternatives have opposite phases. Their amplitudes partially or completely cancel, reducing the probability. These locations become dark fringes or low-count regions. In the wave analogy, a crest meets a trough.
The analogy is useful for visualizing reinforcement and cancellation, but it should not be mistaken for the complete quantum explanation. Quantum mechanics assigns amplitudes to alternatives and obtains probabilities from their combined absolute square. It does not require a literal material wave to flow through the apparatus.
What changes when which-path information is available?
Opening both slits is not enough
Two openings by themselves do not guarantee a visible interference pattern. The alternatives must remain physically indistinguishable in the relevant experiment. If the apparatus records a reliable mark identifying the slit, the two routes become distinguishable and the interference pattern changes or disappears.
For example, a detector placed near a slit could interact with the passing quantum and leave information about the route. Even if nobody reads the detector afterward, the physical interaction and the availability of path information alter the conditions that allowed the amplitudes to combine as indistinguishable alternatives.

The measurement is physical, not mental
“Observation” in this context means a measurement interaction involving equipment, the environment or another physical system. It does not mean that a conscious person’s attention is required. The relevant issue is whether the apparatus can, in principle, distinguish the alternatives and preserve that information.
“It is impossible to design an apparatus to determine which hole the electron passes through, that will not at the same time disturb the electrons enough to destroy the interference pattern.”
— Richard P. Feynman, The Feynman Lectures on Physics, Vol. III, Chapter 1
Feynman’s point is about the physical design of the measurement. Trying to obtain path information changes the experiment rather than revealing an untouched classical trajectory that was already present.

| Experimental condition | Available alternatives | What the detector records | Interference fringes? |
|---|---|---|---|
| One slit open | One route through the barrier | A single-slit distribution of localized detections | No two-route interference pattern |
| Both slits open, no path information | Two indistinguishable routes | Individual impacts that accumulate into alternating high- and low-probability regions | Yes |
| Both slits open, reliable path information available | Two distinguishable routes | A distribution altered by the measurement interaction | Reduced or absent, depending on how completely the paths are distinguished |
This comparison separates four ideas that are often blended together: how many openings exist, whether the alternatives can be distinguished, what one detection looks like, and what the accumulated distribution looks like.
Is a quantum object a wave or a particle?
The double-slit result resists that either-or question. The screen registers localized events, a feature associated with particle-like detection. The distribution of many events depends on amplitude addition, a feature often described with wave language. Quantum mechanics predicts both aspects without requiring the object to be a classical wave in one circumstance and a classical billiard ball in another.
A careful explanation therefore distinguishes observations from interpretations:

- Observed: detections occur at definite screen locations, and many detections form a reproducible interference distribution.
- Calculated: amplitudes for alternative routes are added, then converted into probabilities by taking the absolute square.
- Not established by the pattern alone: a simple everyday story about what the unmeasured object “really did” between source and screen.
That distinction prevents two common errors: saying that particles physically bump into one another to make the pattern, or claiming that the experiment proves a particular philosophical interpretation of quantum mechanics.
Why the effect matters
Quantum interference is a foundational test of quantum mechanics because it exposes the difference between adding probabilities and adding amplitudes. If the alternatives behaved as ordinary classical alternatives, the screen would receive the corresponding sum of separate distributions. The observed fringes show that the alternatives contribute coherently to a single probability calculation when they are not distinguished.
The effect also gives experiments a sensitive way to study phase relationships. A small change in wavelength, slit spacing or the physical interactions near the slits can move or weaken the fringes. The pattern is therefore not merely a visual curiosity; it is a quantitative signature of how quantum alternatives combine.

The familiar apparatus is not the only setting in which interference can be studied. A Berkeley Lab report published in connection with work reported in the November 9, 2007 issue of Science described an experiment involving a hydrogen molecule. In that arrangement, the molecule’s two proton nuclei served as slit-like alternatives, and researchers analyzed interference in the resulting electron waves.
The example extends the same conceptual structure beyond a metal barrier with two cut openings. The alternatives arise from the molecule’s internal arrangement, while the measured electron distribution carries the interference information. It should be understood as a specific 2007 experiment, not as a newly conducted result or a general statistic about all quantum systems.

How to analyze any interference experiment
When confronted with a new example, use this sequence rather than starting with the word “wave.”
- Identify the alternatives. Ask what distinct routes, states or processes can lead to the same final outcome.
- Check whether they are indistinguishable. Determine whether any detector or environmental interaction can reliably reveal which alternative occurred.
- Combine amplitudes first. Represent the alternatives by amplitudes and add them before calculating a probability.
- Look for phase-dependent changes. Reinforcement should produce more events in some regions; cancellation should produce fewer.
- Separate events from statistics. Describe what one detector click looks like separately from the distribution formed by many clicks.
- State the measurement condition. If path information is acquired, explain what physical interaction supplied it and how the distribution changed.
This checklist works for the two-slit experiment without asserting that the quantum object followed one hidden classical path or physically divided into two ordinary pieces.
Common misconceptions and precise corrections
“The particles interfere with one another.”
The standard single-particle experiment can be run with particles arriving far enough apart that they do not interact with one another. The interference concerns amplitudes for alternatives available to each quantum event. The final pattern is a statistical accumulation of those events.
“A person looking causes the pattern to vanish.”
Human awareness is not the operative ingredient. A physical measurement that distinguishes the paths changes the conditions for interference, whether or not a person examines the recorded data.
“The particle must be a tiny water wave.”
Wave terminology describes phase, reinforcement and cancellation, but quantum amplitudes are not ordinary ripples in a material medium. The mathematical rule and measured probabilities are more precise than the classical picture.
“A dark fringe means no particle can ever be detected there.”
A perfectly destructive location in an idealized model can have zero predicted probability, but real equipment, imperfect coherence and incomplete path distinction can modify the visibility. The essential point is the relative suppression produced by amplitude cancellation.
