The results can be strongly correlated, but the important test is what happens when the two systems are measured in different, independently chosen ways. Those cross-setting correlations can violate a Bell inequality, ruling out local hidden-variable explanations that satisfy the test’s assumptions.
A two-qubit Bell state makes the idea concrete, while entangled photon polarization shows how laboratories create and test it. Entanglement produces correlations, not a controllable message sent faster than light. In real quantum networks, photon loss and imperfect detection make distributing those correlations over long distances difficult.

Start with two qubits
A qubit is a two-level quantum system used to represent quantum information. Its two reference states are commonly written as |0⟩ and |1⟩, but a qubit can also be in a superposition such as α|0⟩ + β|1⟩, where the complex amplitudes determine the probabilities of measurement outcomes.

If both qubits are measured in the computational basis, the only possible result pairs are 00 and 11. Each individual result is random, but the two results always match. Seeing that matching pattern is a useful first clue, not the complete definition of entanglement.
Why matching answers are not enough
Imagine two envelopes containing ordinary bits. One envelope goes to Alice and the other to Bob. If the bits were prepared as 0 and 0 or as 1 and 1, opening the envelopes would also produce matching results. The envelopes could have carried a shared classical instruction from the beginning.
Entangled qubits differ when Alice and Bob choose among alternative measurement bases. The statistics across those choices follow the joint quantum state, and no model in which each particle merely carries a locally stored answer for every possible setting can reproduce all of them while also preserving locality and the other assumptions of a Bell test. The distinction is therefore not “correlated versus uncorrelated”; it is “classically preassignable correlations versus correlations that resist every local hidden-variable account.” IBM’s overview presents this contrast through entangled states and alternative measurement bases: IBM Quantum Learning, “Entanglement in action”.

For a pair of systems, a product state has the form |ψ⟩A ⊗ |φ⟩B. It says that the complete description can be built from a state of A and a state of B. An entangled state cannot be written that way. The Bell state |Φ+⟩ is a superposition of the joint alternatives |00⟩ and |11⟩, rather than a statement that each qubit independently possesses a definite bit.
Before measurement, it is misleading to say that one qubit is secretly 0 or 1 and the other is carrying a matching copy. Measurement produces one joint outcome, with probabilities determined by the shared state. If the first measurement is made in the computational basis, the second result is correlated with it. If the observers rotate their measurement bases, the pattern changes in a precisely predicted way. The correlations are properties of the pair, even though each observer sees only local outcomes.
Local states versus a shared state
For an entangled pair, each qubit considered alone can look completely random. The useful information resides in the joint statistics collected after many repetitions. This is why one measurement cannot reveal “the entanglement” by itself. A single matching result is compatible with many classical preparations; an ensemble of results obtained under several settings is needed to test the stronger claim.
Entanglement also depends on how the systems are prepared and measured. Two photons with identical polarizations are not automatically an entangled pair. Conversely, entangled systems do not have to give identical answers for every choice of measurement; their predicted relationship depends on the state and on the settings selected by the observers.
How a Bell or CHSH test turns the idea into an experiment
Bell’s theorem shows that local hidden-variable theories obey inequalities on correlations. Quantum mechanics predicts that suitable entangled states and measurement choices can violate those bounds. The CHSH form, named for John Clauser, Michael Horne, Abner Shimony and Richard Holt, is a widely used version.

The CHSH setup
Two separated observers, often called Alice and Bob, each choose one of two measurement settings. Alice’s choices can be labeled A0 and A1; Bob’s can be B0 and B1. Each measurement returns one of two outcomes, conventionally represented as +1 or −1. After many trials, the observers compare their records and calculate a combination of correlations:
S = E(A0,B0) + E(A0,B1) + E(A1,B0) − E(A1,B1).
Under the local hidden-variable assumptions used in the test, the magnitude of S cannot exceed 2. Quantum predictions for an appropriate entangled state and appropriately selected settings can exceed that limit. IBM’s tutorial gives a state-preparation and basis-measurement procedure for examining the inequality: IBM Quantum Documentation, “CHSH inequality”.
The CHSH game as an intuition pump
The same logic can be described as a game. Two separated players receive questions, one question per player, and each must answer without seeing the other’s question. They win when their answers satisfy a specified relationship tied to the pair of questions. A classical strategy can coordinate answers in advance, but it has a ceiling on its average success. An entangled strategy produces a higher success rate because the players’ measurements act on a shared quantum state.

What a violation does—and does not—prove
A statistically significant Bell violation rules out local hidden-variable models that satisfy the experiment’s stated assumptions. It does not identify one particular interpretation of quantum mechanics as the uniquely correct interpretation, and it is not a blanket proof that every philosophical question about measurement has been settled.
The assumptions and experimental details matter. A Bell test must specify how settings are selected, how far apart the measurements are, how outcomes are recorded and paired, and how losses are handled. “Locality” and “fair sampling” are different issues. A setup can address one loophole without addressing every other possible weakness.
What real Bell experiments established
Foundational experiments made the abstract inequality measurable with photons. The American Physical Society’s historical account reports that Stuart Freedman and John Clauser collected 200 hours of data and observed coincidence rates that violated a Bell inequality: American Physical Society, “Nobel Prize: Quantum Entanglement Unveiled” (October 4, 2022).

Later experiments changed the apparatus to address particular loopholes. The APS account describes rapid switching of measurement paths or settings as part of work aimed at the locality loophole. A separate 2013 experiment recorded by the National Institute of Standards and Technology used high-efficiency transition-edge sensors to demonstrate a Bell violation without relying on the fair-sampling assumption: NIST, “Bell violation using entangled photons without the fair-sampling assumption”.

These results should be described narrowly. A result that closes or avoids a named loophole under specified conditions does not automatically close every loophole in every Bell experiment. The strength of the conclusion comes from the measured correlations, the statistical analysis and the assumptions that the particular apparatus actually supports.
How photons carry qubits
Photons have several physical degrees of freedom that can encode quantum information. For the experiments discussed here, polarization is especially useful. Horizontal and vertical polarization can serve as two reference states, analogous to |0⟩ and |1⟩. Other polarization bases are obtained by rotating the measurement apparatus.
Polarizers and analyzers
A polarizer transmits some polarization components and suppresses others. In a Bell experiment, each observer uses an analyzer whose orientation corresponds to a chosen measurement setting. Repeating the trial for many pairs of settings yields coincidence counts and correlation estimates.
A sheet of linear polarizing film can demonstrate ordinary polarization effects, such as changing brightness when two filters are rotated relative to each other. It cannot, by itself, create an entangled photon pair. Entanglement requires a source that prepares a joint state, controlled measurement settings and detectors capable of registering the relevant events.
Spontaneous parametric down-conversion
A common laboratory source is spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC). A pump photon from a classical light field enters a nonlinear crystal and can be converted into two lower-energy photons whose properties are linked. With a suitable crystal, geometry and collection setup, the emitted pair can be prepared in an entangled state. NIST describes SPDC and other sources used in quantum-network research at “Sources of Nonclassical Light for Quantum Networks”.
The source alone is not the whole experiment. Researchers must route the two photons to separate stations, choose measurement bases, detect individual arrivals, reject or account for background events and compare the resulting records. Timing electronics, calibrated optics and high-quality detectors determine whether the observed correlations are strong enough to support a Bell analysis.
A practical way to understand an entanglement experiment
You can follow the logic without building a quantum-optics laboratory by separating the experiment into preparation, setting choice, measurement and analysis.
- Prepare many nominally identical pairs. Each trial starts with a fresh pair in the same entangled state. Reusing one measured pair would not supply the independent statistics needed for a correlation test.
- Send the members to two stations. Alice’s and Bob’s devices should be arranged so that, for the relevant time window, the choice and measurement at one station cannot ordinarily influence the other through a slower-than-light signal.
- Choose settings independently. Each station selects one of its available analyzer orientations. The setting choice is part of the data, not an after-the-fact adjustment.
- Record binary outcomes and timing. Each detected event is assigned an outcome such as +1 or −1, along with the setting used and a time tag so that the two records can be paired.
- Repeat across all setting combinations. Matching only one basis demonstrates correlation but does not test a Bell inequality. The four CHSH combinations are needed to estimate the four terms in
S. - Compute correlations and uncertainties. For each setting pair, compare the frequency of equal and unequal outcomes to obtain
E. Then evaluateSand its statistical uncertainty. - Check the assumptions and losses. Document detector efficiency, missed events, background counts, timing windows, setting generation and the physical separation of the stations. A numerical excess over 2 is meaningful only when the analysis justifies the way those issues were treated.
This workflow explains why a photograph of two apparently synchronized particles is not evidence of entanglement. The defining evidence is a reproducible, multi-setting correlation pattern that survives the relevant controls.

Entanglement, distance and causality
Why the correlations look instantaneous
When Alice measures her member of an entangled pair, her outcome is correlated with the outcome Bob will obtain if he measures his member in a compatible way, even when the stations are far apart. Quantum theory predicts this joint pattern without requiring a signal carrying Alice’s result to Bob.
Bob’s local data alone remain random. He cannot determine Alice’s outcome, her measurement setting or even whether she has measured anything by inspecting his sequence of results. Only after Alice and Bob exchange ordinary classical records can they sort the trials by settings and see the correlation.
Why entanglement cannot send a faster-than-light message
To send a controllable message, Alice would need to choose an action that makes Bob’s local results say “0” for one message and “1” for another. Entanglement does not provide that control. Alice can choose a measurement setting, but Bob’s individual outcomes retain the same locally random distribution. The message appears only in a comparison of both records, and that comparison requires a conventional communication channel limited by relativity.

Entanglement therefore conflicts with simple local hidden-variable pictures, but it does not provide a faster-than-light telephone. NIST’s overview of quantum communication makes the same practical distinction while discussing the role of photons: NIST, “What Is Quantum Cryptography?”.
Why long-distance photonic entanglement is difficult
Photons are attractive for networking because they can travel through free space or optical fiber and can carry quantum information in properties such as polarization. The channel is not perfect, however. Absorption and scattering in fiber reduce the number of photons that arrive, and detectors also miss some events. Losing one member of a pair removes the joint record needed for many protocols and can bias a naive analysis toward the events that survived.
NIST identifies photon absorption in optical fiber as a limit on conveying information and preserving fragile quantum properties over large distances. The practical engineering problem is therefore not merely to create entanglement once, but to generate it reliably, route both photons, preserve the encoded state and detect enough pairs to establish useful correlations: NIST, “What Is Quantum Cryptography?”.
Loss versus the meaning of a Bell result
Loss affects both communication performance and the interpretation of an experiment. If a detector records only an unrepresentative subset of emitted pairs, treating that subset as if it were the whole ensemble invokes a fair-sampling assumption. High-efficiency detectors can reduce dependence on that assumption, as illustrated by the NIST-recorded transition-edge-sensor experiment. This is why “the source produced entangled photons” and “the apparatus demonstrated a loophole-resistant Bell violation” are separate claims.
Comparing ways to demonstrate or implement entanglement
The right comparison depends on what you are trying to establish: a correlation, a quantum-information operation or a rigorous Bell test.

Common misunderstandings and how to correct them
“Entangled particles always have matching properties.”
Only particular measurements on particular states have that relationship. Other settings can produce different correlations, and the multi-setting pattern—not universal matching—is what distinguishes entanglement from a classical shared instruction.
“A hidden answer is revealed when the particle is measured.”
That picture can reproduce some individual correlations, especially in one basis, but Bell tests are designed to check whether one local preassignment can account for results across several choices. A violation rejects that class of explanation under the test assumptions.
“A polarizing filter makes entangled photons.”
A filter analyzes or alters polarization. It is not an entangled-pair source. Demonstrating entanglement needs an appropriate preparation process such as SPDC, two measurement stations and statistical analysis.

Bell violations constrain local hidden-variable theories. They do not select a single interpretation from all interpretations, nor do they remove the need to state which experimental assumptions were used.
“Entanglement is a faster-than-light communication channel.”
Bob’s local outcomes are random, so Alice cannot encode a readable message in them. The correlation becomes visible only after classical comparison of records.
“A single impressive coincidence proves entanglement.”
Random events and classical sources can produce coincidences. Evidence requires repeated trials, controlled settings, uncertainty estimates and an analysis that accounts for losses and other loopholes.
What entanglement is useful for
Entanglement is a resource for quantum information protocols because it supplies joint correlations that cannot be replaced by independent local descriptions. In photonic research, entangled pairs are studied as carriers for distributing quantum states and as test systems for quantum-network components. The practical value lies in protocols that use the entire preparation, transmission and measurement procedure—not in a particle mysteriously transmitting a private message to its partner.
For a general reader, the most useful mental model is this: a qubit is a two-level quantum system; an entangled pair is one shared state of two such systems; a Bell test asks whether the observed correlations could have come from local prewritten instructions; and a photon experiment implements the qubits through optical degrees of freedom such as polarization.
A precise checklist for evaluating an entanglement claim
- State: Is the claimed joint state specified, or are the particles merely described as correlated?
- Degrees of freedom: What physical property carries each qubit—polarization, path, energy level or another encoding?
- Settings: Were multiple measurement bases chosen, rather than one fixed analyzer orientation?
- Statistic: Is there a Bell or CHSH quantity, with uncertainty and a clearly stated bound?
- Assumptions: Does the analysis identify how locality, detector efficiency, fair sampling and background events were handled?
- Communication: Does the claim incorrectly promise a controllable faster-than-light signal?
- Distance: If photons traveled through fiber or free space, what losses and detection limits affected the usable events?
Keeping these questions separate prevents the most common category error: treating any correlation as proof of entanglement, or treating a genuine entanglement correlation as a superluminal communication method.
