Also called the oceanic pole of inaccessibility, it is an open-water location in the South Pacific at approximately 48°52.6′S, 123°23.6′W. The nearest land is about 2,688 kilometers away, according to NOAA. It is not an island, a settlement, or a visible marker in the sea—just a calculated geographic point whose closest coast is farther away than any other point’s closest coast.

Where is Point Nemo?
The commonly cited position is 48°52.6′ south latitude, 123°23.6′ west longitude. Those coordinates place the point in the South Pacific, well away from the coastlines of South America, Polynesia, and Antarctica. Entering the coordinates into a digital globe shows a patch of ocean rather than a named island or territory.

“Point” is important here. Point Nemo is not an object that can be seen rising above the waves. The location is the result of measuring distances from every possible ocean position to the nearest land and identifying the position with the largest minimum distance.
NOAA’s Ocean Service describes it plainly: “Point Nemo is the location in the ocean that is farthest from land.” The page, titled “Where is Point Nemo?”, was last updated January 4, 2021.

The three closest land points
The nearest coast is not one continuous mainland shoreline. NOAA identifies three roughly equidistant reference points around the location:
| Land point | Direction from Point Nemo | Role in the calculation |
|---|---|---|
| Ducie Island | North | One of the three closest land points. |
| Motu Nui | Northeast | One of the three closest land points. |
| Maher Island | South | One of the three closest land points, off Antarctica. |
Ducie Island is part of the Pitcairn Islands group. Motu Nui is a small islet near Rapa Nui (Easter Island). Maher Island lies off the Antarctic coast. Their arrangement around the point is why Point Nemo sits in a broad, exceptionally isolated part of the Pacific rather than simply being “far from the nearest continent.”

| Approximately 2,688 km | NOAA Ocean Service, page updated 2021 | An official rounded estimate of the distance to the nearest land. |
| 2,690 ± 2 km | Daniel Garcia-Castellanos and U. Lombardo, 2007 | A calculated value with an uncertainty range, measured to the coasts of Motu Nui, Maher Island, and Ducie Island. |
The two numbers are not a meaningful disagreement. NOAA rounds to the nearest kilometer for a general audience, while the 2007 paper reports a value with a stated uncertainty. Coastline data, mathematical treatment, and rounding can move the final result by a few kilometers without changing which place is the oceanic pole.

At NOAA’s rounded value, the nearest land is roughly 1,670 miles away. That conversion is only a change of units; it does not imply a different measurement or a separate location.
What “pole of inaccessibility” means
A pole of inaccessibility is defined relative to a particular coastline. Garcia-Castellanos and Lombardo state the concept this way: “A Pole of Inaccessibility (PIA) is defined as the location furthest from a particular coastline.” The phrase therefore describes a measurement problem, not a political designation or a type of terrain.
For the oceanic version, imagine placing a point at every possible position in the ocean. For each position, measure the shortest route over the Earth’s surface to land. The relevant number for that position is its distance to the nearest coast, not its average distance to all coasts. The oceanic pole is the position whose nearest-coast distance is greatest.

Why the nearest coast matters
A location can be thousands of kilometers from most continents yet still be relatively close to a small island. The calculation must account for every shoreline, including small islands and Antarctic islands. Ignoring one of those land points could incorrectly move the pole or overstate its isolation.

How the location is computed
The 2007 study used a numerical calculation algorithm to search for the remotest ocean locations and identify the three closest shoreline points around Point Nemo. In simplified terms, the process is:
- Represent the world’s coastlines in a geographic data set.
- Evaluate candidate ocean positions and calculate each position’s shortest distance to land.
- Refine the search around the candidates with the largest nearest-coast distances.
- Report the position and the surrounding shoreline points that control the result.
Modern mapping software can display the published coordinates, but displaying a pin is not the same as independently recomputing the pole. A new calculation depends on the coastline data and distance model it uses.
Why sources can show slightly different coordinates or distances
There is no contradiction in seeing Point Nemo represented with a few different final decimal places. Three technical choices account for most variation:
- Coastline definition: A data set may trace a shoreline at a different scale, include or omit tiny offshore features, or use a different treatment of islands and ice-covered margins.
- Geographic method: Calculations may use different Earth models, numerical grids, or great-circle distance procedures.
- Reported precision: One source may round to the nearest kilometer, while another publishes an uncertainty interval or extra coordinate digits that suggest more precision than the coastline data can support.
The coordinates 48°52.6′S, 123°23.6′W are stable and suitable for a general map reference. They should not be interpreted as proof that the physical ocean surface has a permanently marked point at that exact decimal. The meaningful conclusion is the location’s extreme remoteness, not a difference in the last digit.

What Point Nemo is—and is not
It is a calculated ocean location
Point Nemo is a geographic coordinate in open water. There is no island, buoy, building, road, border post, or permanent community at the point established by the cited sources. A vessel at the coordinates would be on the South Pacific, not standing on a piece of land called Nemo.
It is not the “center of the Pacific”
“Farthest from land” is a specific optimization criterion. It does not mean geometric center, deepest location, midpoint between continents, or the center of the Pacific basin. Those descriptions use different definitions and could produce different coordinates.
It is not automatically the most remote place in every sense
The pole is defined by distance to coastline. Remoteness from airports, shipping lanes, rescue services, weather stations, or communications infrastructure would require separate measurements. The cited sources establish the coastline-distance record, not a universal ranking of every kind of accessibility.

The name comes from Captain Nemo, the submarine sailor in Jules Verne’s Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea. NOAA identifies that literary reference as the origin of the name. “Nemo” also means “no one” in Latin, which suits a point with no resident population, but the documented naming explanation is the connection to Verne’s fictional captain.

The name is a convenient label for a technical geographic result. It does not indicate that the book’s fictional locations correspond to the real coordinates.
How to find it on a map
- Open a globe or mapping application that accepts latitude and longitude.
- Enter
48°52.6′S, 123°23.6′W. If the application uses decimal degrees, enter approximately-48.8767, -123.3933; south and west are represented by negative signs. - Switch to satellite or terrain view only if you want geographic context. At the point itself, the view should show ocean rather than a land feature.
- Zoom out to see the three nearest reference areas: Ducie Island to the north, Motu Nui to the northeast, and Maher Island toward Antarctica to the south.
Different mapping services may place the pin a small distance apart because they round the published coordinates differently. That visual variation is expected and does not turn Point Nemo into several separate places.
What the measurements do—and do not—tell you
The distance figures answer one question: how far the point is from its nearest land. They do not provide a complete profile of the surrounding ocean. The cited NOAA page and 2007 study establish the location, distance, nearest land points, and calculation framework, but they do not establish a reliable statistic about marine life at the point or a quantified claim about spacecraft disposal.
That distinction matters because popular descriptions often attach additional stories to Point Nemo. A claim about biology, ocean conditions, shipping, rescue times, or spacecraft re-entry needs its own measurements and source. The pole-of-inaccessibility calculation alone cannot supply those facts.
Understanding the precision behind the headline number
“About 2,688 kilometers” is the right level of precision for most readers. The 2007 value of 2,690 ± 2 km communicates more than a long string of decimal places: it tells you the authors’ estimate and the uncertainty they associate with it. In both cases, the nearest land points are Motu Nui, Maher Island, and Ducie Island.
When comparing a map, an encyclopedia, and a scientific paper, preserve each source’s qualification. Do not turn NOAA’s approximate figure into a claim that every survey would produce exactly 2,688 km, and do not present the paper’s uncertainty as evidence that the location is unknowable. The methods agree on the practical answer: Point Nemo is roughly 2,700 kilometers from land, farther than any other ocean location under the stated coastline-based definition.
