What Is Percy? A Guide to Visual Testing

Percy is BrowserStack’s visual testing and review platform. It compares screenshots with approved baselines so teams can review visual changes alongside code changes.

Percy is BrowserStack’s visual testing and review platform. It captures screenshots of web pages or application states, compares them with approved baselines, and flags visual differences for people to review. It complements functional tests: a page can behave correctly while an unintended change to its layout, styling, fonts, or colors goes unnoticed.

How Percy visual testing works

  1. Create a project. Set up a Percy project for an application or component library.
  2. Trigger a build. A test, command-line tool, or supported workflow sends page snapshots and assets to Percy.
  3. Render and compare. Percy renders screenshots and compares them with the selected baseline.
  4. Review differences. Reviewers decide whether a change is intentional or needs correction; a detected difference is a review signal, not automatically a defect.
  5. Approve and carry changes forward. Approving intended changes updates the baseline used for later comparisons. Source-control integration can report approval through pull-request or commit status, and builds can be configured to block merges.

Percy projects organize builds. Builds contain snapshots and may include commit and pull-request details when a repository is connected. Baseline and branch settings affect what later builds compare against. Percy’s documentation says approved snapshots carry forward on the branch, and the main branch is auto-approved by default unless project settings change that behavior. See Percy’s visual testing overview and Percy documentation for current workflow details.

What Percy can—and cannot—tell you

Percy is designed to surface visual changes between captured states. It can help catch unintended shifts in layout, styling, fonts, colors, and other visible details. It does not establish that a page’s interactions, data, accessibility, or business logic work correctly; keep functional and other quality checks in the test suite.

A visual diff also needs context. A changed timestamp, rotating promotion, personalized content, animation, or other dynamic region may produce a difference that is expected. Review the changed area against the intended design and test conditions before approving or rejecting it. The available sources do not establish one universal noise-filtering setup, so check the current Percy documentation for project-specific controls.

Frameworks, source control, and CI

Percy’s documented integration ecosystem includes Selenium, Playwright, Cypress, Puppeteer, Ember, Storybook, React Styleguidist, Gatsby, Jekyll, Appium, Tricentis Tosca, Maestro, and a build-your-own SDK path. The product also describes CI/CD, source-control, design-tool, automation-framework, and collaboration integrations. Integration availability does not mean every framework and workflow has identical capabilities; confirm the exact combination in the official documentation.

For a team, the useful pattern is to run visual builds alongside the existing automated test and pull-request process. Reviewers can inspect diffs in the same development cycle, while project settings determine whether visual approval is informational or required before merging.

Cross-browser checks and usage

Percy’s cross-browser guide documents Chrome, Firefox, Edge, and Safari. Browser choice can be managed through Percy project settings or BrowserStack Automate. With Percy-managed rendering, Percy uses its own infrastructure and fixed operating systems; BrowserStack Automate configuration can specify operating-system and browser details when you need to compare OS-level rendering differences. See the cross-browser documentation for current configuration details.

Each browser snapshot counts separately toward monthly screenshot usage. So a page tested in several browsers consumes more screenshot usage than a single-browser capture. Browser versions and update cadence can change, so verify the current browser list and environment choices before relying on a specific version or operating system.

Plans, screenshot allowance, and build history

BrowserStack’s Percy product page states that the free plan includes 5,000 screenshots per month. This is a current-page plan claim, not a permanent allowance; check the Percy product and pricing page for the terms that apply when you sign up. The official documentation states that free-plan builds expire after 30 days and other plans have one year of build history. Retention and packaging can change, so verify current plan terms before choosing Percy for long-lived audit or comparison needs.

When estimating usage, account for the number of states captured, browser coverage, and how often builds run. For a team evaluating plans, also check which integration, retention, and review features are included rather than assuming that a screenshot allowance alone describes the plan.

Percy or a screenshot API?

Percy is a visual regression testing and review workflow: it manages baselines, build comparisons, and approvals. A screenshot API instead returns an image or PDF from a request and is useful when an application needs captures as an output. They solve related but different jobs, so choose based on whether you need managed visual-diff review or programmatic screenshot generation.

For developers who need an API or an MCP server rather than a baseline-review workflow, ScreenshotNeo is the alternative to try first: it removes consent banners, popups, and chat widgets before capture, and only clean shots are billed.

Or skip the browser setup

Use one GET request to capture a page as an image or PDF. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie and consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before the shot; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server gives AI agents tools to take screenshots, inspect page information, and capture PDFs. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.
