OBS Studio is free desktop software for building a live-stream layout from sources such as a game, screen, webcam, images, and audio, then sending that stream to a platform. To get started, run its Auto-Configuration Wizard, create a scene, add the sources you need, check your audio and output settings, connect a streaming destination, and make a short test before going live.
What OBS Studio does
OBS Studio is an application for live streaming and recording. Its core building blocks are scenes and sources: a scene is the layout viewers see, and sources are the content arranged in that layout. For example, a gaming scene might combine game footage, a webcam, and microphone audio. OBS can also capture a display or an individual window, so you do not need a camera or capture card for every kind of stream.

The details of menus can vary by OBS version and operating system. The steps below follow the workflow in OBS Project’s Quick Start Guide and Sources Guide.
Set up OBS for your computer and connection
Run the Auto-Configuration Wizard
- Open OBS Studio. If the Auto-Configuration Wizard does not appear automatically, open Tools → Auto-Configuration Wizard.
- Choose the option that matches your intended use, such as optimizing for streaming or recording. The wizard considers your intended use, available hardware resources, and network conditions.
- Complete the prompts and apply the suggested settings. Treat them as a starting point; performance depends on your actual computer, upload connection, and streaming destination.
Know which video settings affect the stream
In Settings → Video, the Base (Canvas) Resolution is the design area for your scenes. The Output (Scaled) Resolution is the resolution sent to the stream if you scale it. Frame rate controls how many frames are sent per second. Higher frame rates can demand more from the computer, so choose settings your system can sustain rather than assuming the highest option is best.
#1 Best Overall
- [Natural Audio Clarity] Operated with frequency response of 50Hz-16KHz, the podcasting XLR mic delivers balanced audio range, likely to resonate with your audience. Directional cardioid dynamic microphone corded will not exaggerate your voice, while rejects unwanted off-axis noise for vocal originality and intelligibility during your PS5 gaming streaming video recording. (Tips: Keep the top of end-addressing XLR dynamic microphone AM8 facing audio source, and suggested recording range is 2 to 6 in.)
- [XLR Connection Upgrade-Ability] To use XLR connection, connect the podcast microphone to an audio interface (or mixer) using a separate XLR cable (NOT Included) . Well-connected and smooth operation improves audio flexibility to make you explore various types of music recording singing. The streaming mic isolates the pristine and accurate sound from ambient noise with greater no interference and fidelity. (RGB and function key on mic are INACTIVE when using XLR connection.)
- [USB Connection with Handy Mute] Skip the hassle of setting something up and plug the cable to play the dynamic USB microphone directly, which suits for beginner creators or daily podcast. You can quickly control the gamer mic with tap-to-mute that is independent of computer/Macbook programs to keep privacy when live streaming. LED mute reminder helps you get rid of forgetting to cancel the mute. (RGB and function key are only available for USB connection, but NOT for XLR connection)
- [Soothing Controllable RGB] RGB ring on the desktop gaming microphone for PC, with 3 modes and more than 10 light colors collection, matches your PC gears accessories for gaming synergy even in dim room. You can control the RGB key button of the dynamic microphone USB directly for game color scheme gaming or live streaming. Configured memory function, the streaming microphone RGB no need to repeated selections after turnning off and brings itself alive when power on. (Only available for USB connection)
- [More Function Keys] Computer microphone with headphones jack upgrades your rhythm game experience and gets feedback whether the real-time voice your audience hear as expected. Get the desired level via monitoring volume control when gaming recording. Smooth mic gain knob on the PC microphone gaming has some resistance to the point, easily for audio attenuation or boost presence to less post-production audio. (Only available for USB connection)
In Settings → Output, review the streaming output settings before broadcasting. There is no one bitrate that is right for every stream: the destination platform’s current limits and your upload conditions matter. OBS’s older Overview page uses 6,000 kbps as an example of a Twitch maximum, not a universal recommendation; check the current requirements of the platform you plan to use instead. See OBS’s Overview Guide.
Build a scene and add the content you want viewers to see
Create a scene
- In the Scenes dock, create or select a scene. Give it a name that describes its purpose, such as “Gameplay” or “Presentation.”
- In the Sources dock, select the + button and choose a source type. The right choice depends on what you want to capture.
- Arrange the sources in the preview. A source higher in the list appears above sources below it, so put a webcam above gameplay if you want it overlaid. Select a source to position, resize, or crop it; use its visibility control to show or hide it.
Choose the appropriate source
| What you want to show | OBS source to consider | Important note |
|---|---|---|
| Your whole monitor | Display Capture | Captures the display rather than just one application window. |
| One application | Window Capture | Use this when you want to show a particular window instead of the entire display. |
| A game | Game Capture | OBS documents this source as Windows-only. On another operating system, choose an appropriate capture source available there. |
| A webcam or external video device | Video Capture Device | Select a connected webcam or capture-card input. These devices are optional and only needed for the video you intend to bring into OBS. |
| A still image, title, or video clip | Image, Text, or Media Source | These sources can be layered into a scene like other visual elements. |
| Sound from a microphone or other audio input | Audio input source or the relevant audio device setting | Check the Audio Mixer to confirm that the intended input is actually reaching OBS. |
Check audio before you connect to the platform
- Speak into the microphone or play the sound you intend to include, then watch the Audio Mixer. The relevant meter should move.
- If the wrong device is active or no meter moves, open Settings → Audio and select the intended devices manually.
- Listen to a recording or test stream, if possible, to check that audio is present and at a suitable level. A moving meter confirms signal, but a playback check can reveal problems such as unwanted background sound or an unbalanced mix.
OBS’s Quick Start Guide describes desktop audio and a microphone as defaults, but the selected devices may not match your computer or setup. Confirm them rather than assuming the defaults are correct.

Connect OBS to your streaming destination and go live
- In OBS, open Settings → Stream, select your streaming service, and connect an account or enter the stream key using the service’s current instructions. Treat a stream key like a password: do not share it or display it on stream.
- Confirm that your scene, audio devices, video settings, and output settings are correct for the destination. Platform requirements can change, so use that platform’s current guidance for supported resolution, frame rate, and bitrate.
- Use Start Streaming in OBS when you are ready to broadcast. Check the destination’s own live dashboard to confirm that it is receiving the stream before sharing the link with viewers.
- Before your first public broadcast, make a short test by recording or streaming for a few minutes. OBS recommends testing first so you can catch setup or performance problems before going live for real.
Troubleshoot common first-stream problems
| What you notice | What to check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| No microphone or desktop sound | Audio Mixer meters and device selections under Settings → Audio | Select the intended input or output device, then test again and listen to a recording or stream. |
| The wrong content appears in the preview | Selected source type and source visibility | Use the source that matches the content—display, window, game, or video device—and turn on the intended source. |
| A webcam or other layer is hidden | Source order in the Sources dock | Move that source above the content it should cover; higher sources appear in front of lower ones. |
| The stream stutters or the computer struggles | Output resolution, frame rate, and the wizard’s suggested setup | Test a lower output resolution or frame rate and retest. Higher frame rates can tax the system; do not assume a single setting fits all hardware. |
| The platform does not receive the stream | Streaming service selection, account connection or stream key, and the platform’s live dashboard | Follow the destination’s current connection steps, verify the key privately, and check whether the platform reports an incoming stream. |
| The stream disconnects or cannot meet the selected output | Network conditions and the destination’s current streaming requirements | Run another short test and use settings your connection and platform support. Do not rely on an old example bitrate as a current limit. |
Copyright and platform rules still apply
OBS sends the content you choose to broadcast; using OBS does not grant rights to music, video, images, or other material in your scene. Use content you own, have permission to use, or are otherwise entitled to stream, and check the rules of the platform where you broadcast. A technically successful stream can still violate copyright or platform policies.
