The NXP IW612 is a secure tri-radio connectivity chip for products that need dual-band Wi‑Fi 6, Bluetooth and 802.15.4 networking in one design. It can support Matter over Wi‑Fi alongside Thread-based Matter devices, but the precise radio combinations available at once depend on coexistence behavior, host software and the finished product’s design.
What the IW612 is—and what changed since launch
NXP announced the IW612 on January 4, 2022, describing it as a secure tri-radio device with Wi‑Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.2 and 802.15.4. Current NXP product documentation describes Bluetooth 5.4 certification while also specifying support for Bluetooth 5.2 features. Those are different claims: the launch-era description is not the complete picture of the current documentation.

The IW612 is a connectivity component for product makers, not a consumer device that works on its own. A finished product also needs a host processor and software, antennas and board-level RF design, and any required regulatory and product certifications.

Can Wi‑Fi, Bluetooth and Thread operate together?
Coexistence among the three radios is a central design goal. NXP’s 2022 announcement says the IW612 enables simultaneous transmit and receive. The current data sheet documents simultaneous receive with Bluetooth and 802.15.4 while Wi‑Fi is active. That supports designs where Wi‑Fi networking overlaps with Bluetooth or Thread-related activity, but it should not be read as a guarantee that every radio can transmit simultaneously in every combination or under every workload. Confirm the required operating modes against the data sheet, software and reference design for the intended product.
#1 Best Overall
- Output current of receiving module: 5V/1000mA; Operating voltage of the transmitting module: 5V~12V
- Transmitter module size: 17mm*11mm*2.3mm; Transmitting and receiving coil size: Outer diameter 40mm thickness 1.8mm
- This product is designed for wireless charging and power supply for various small electronic products. It has the characteristics of small size, easy to use, and high efficiency
- Due to the use of a contactless charging power supply, the product can be completely sealed, waterproof, and dustproof, increasing its service life and making it more convenient to use
- It is mainly applicable to mobile electronic products such as mobile phones, game consoles, fish tanks, digital cameras, Electric shavers, learning machines, underwater supplies, and other products
Combining the radios can avoid designing around three separate radio chips, while allowing a product to use Wi‑Fi for IP connectivity, Bluetooth for functions such as commissioning or audio, and 802.15.4 for mesh networking. Actual benefits depend on the system’s antenna layout, traffic, power and thermal constraints.
How the IW612 fits into Matter and Thread designs
The chip’s Wi‑Fi subsystem supports Matter over Wi‑Fi; its 802.15.4 subsystem supports Thread and Zigbee. NXP positions the IW612 for Matter controllers and devices, gateways, and Thread border-router designs. In a suitable product architecture, a host can connect Matter-over-Wi‑Fi and Matter-over-Thread devices through their respective networks. The chip provides radio capabilities; the product’s host software and architecture determine how those capabilities become a working Matter system.
NXP said in its January 4, 2022 announcement: “Additionally, the IW612 enables communication between Matter devices regardless of whether the devices use Wi-Fi or Thread.” This describes the intended cross-network role, not automatic Matter certification for every product using the chip. Certification and interoperability depend on the finished implementation.

| Subsystem | Documented capabilities | Host connection |
|---|---|---|
| Wi‑Fi | Dual-band 2.4/5 GHz, 1×1 802.11ax (Wi‑Fi 6), channels up to 80 MHz, WPA2/WPA3. The 2025 data sheet lists peak data rate up to 480 Mbps and transmit power up to +21 dBm. | SDIO 3.0 |
| Bluetooth | Current documentation lists Bluetooth 5.4 certification and support for Bluetooth 5.2 features, including LE 2 Mbps, long range, advertising extensions and LE Audio/isochronous channels. The 2025 data sheet lists LE/BDR transmit power up to +19 dBm. | UART |
| 802.15.4 | Thread, Zigbee and Dual PAN mesh functions; shares RF resources with Bluetooth and supports simultaneous receive with Bluetooth. | SPI |
The listed data rates and transmit powers are data-sheet maxima, not guaranteed application throughput or range. Real results depend on configuration, environment, antenna and product implementation.

NXP says the IW612 integrates RF front-end functions including power amplifiers, low-noise amplifiers and switches. That can reduce external component count and board complexity, but it does not remove the need for careful RF layout, antenna selection or validation in the final enclosure.
NXP describes security features including secure boot, secure firmware update, key generation and lifecycle management, and hardware encryption. A chip’s security features do not by themselves certify the finished product or guarantee its security: implementation, update practices, key handling and any required certification remain product-level responsibilities.
Products that may use an IW612 design
NXP lists applications spanning smart speakers and displays, streaming or OTT devices, televisions, gateways, hubs and bridges, security systems, thermostats, cameras, doorbells, outlets, appliances, industrial automation and smart lighting. These examples illustrate the chip’s role as an embedded connectivity building block, not a list of consumer products confirmed to contain it.

Modules, development hardware and availability
NXP’s current product page names AzureWave AW‑PU600 and AW‑XH320 as partner modules. A module can simplify integration compared with designing directly around a chip, but verify the exact model, supported interfaces, antenna arrangement, software support and regional certifications for the intended project. The available information does not establish current retail inventory, a particular development board, or a price.
Quick Recap
What to check before choosing it
- Concurrency: Identify which radios must receive or transmit at the same time, then confirm that exact combination in the applicable data sheet and software documentation.
- Network roles: Specify whether the product needs Matter over Wi‑Fi, Thread, Zigbee, a border router, a controller, or a combination.
- Host architecture: Confirm that the host can support Wi‑Fi over SDIO 3.0, Bluetooth over UART and 802.15.4 over SPI, along with the required drivers and software stack.
- RF and power: Validate band and throughput needs, antenna and board layout, coexistence, power modes and thermal limits in the finished design.
- Security and compliance: Plan for secure boot and update implementation, key lifecycle management, and the certifications and regulatory approvals required for the finished product.
- Development path: Check that the selected module or reference hardware, software and support are available for the target region and product schedule.
