Native Command Queuing (NCQ) is a feature of the Serial ATA (SATA) interface that lets a compatible drive accept multiple read or write commands and reorder their execution. The drive can choose an efficient order for pending work instead of handling each request strictly in the order it arrived. Whether that helps depends on the workload and whether both the drive and host controller support NCQ.
How does Native Command Queuing work?
Without a queue, a drive handles requests one at a time in arrival order. With NCQ, the host can submit several commands that remain outstanding, and the drive can select a more efficient execution order. This is useful when multiple operations are waiting and the drive has a choice about what to handle next.

On a SATA system using AHCI, the host controller interface provides command-list entries and data-transfer descriptors. SATA NCQ uses the FPDMA Queued command protocol, with command tags associating each queued command with its completion or data transfer. The host’s command list and the drive’s ability to reorder pending work are related parts of the process; the drive chooses the internal execution order.
What does NCQ need to work?
NCQ requires compatible support on both ends of the SATA connection: the storage device and the host controller or platform. SATA-IO summarizes this requirement on its Native Command Queuing feature page, and Intel describes AHCI-compatible controller/platform support and an NCQ-capable drive in its AHCI/NCQ requirements article.

An AHCI setting alone does not prove that NCQ is active. Check the specifications for the actual controller and drive, and verify support for the configuration in use.
How many commands can NCQ queue?
The Intel Serial ATA AHCI Specification, Revision 1.3.1 describes support for up to 32 NCQ entries per device. That is a specification maximum, not a guarantee that every drive, controller, firmware and driver combination supports or uses a queue of that depth.

Does enabling NCQ make storage faster?
Not necessarily. NCQ can improve processing efficiency when multiple operations are pending. Intel identifies random workloads as a case where gains may be possible, while SATA-IO describes benefits as transactional workload increases. If requests are not arriving concurrently, there may be little opportunity for the drive to reorder them. The cited sources do not establish a universal speed increase or percentage, so results depend on the workload and system.

What NCQ does not mean
- NCQ is specifically a SATA feature; the phrase “command queuing” can also refer to mechanisms in other storage interfaces.
- NCQ support is not universal across SATA drives or host controllers.
- NCQ is not, by itself, a guarantee of faster performance for every hard drive, SSD or workload.
- A SATA cable or an AHCI setting alone does not add NCQ support to an incompatible device or controller.
