Microsoft’s MAI-Transcribe-2-Streaming is a speech-to-text service that sends interim transcript text while someone is still speaking, then updates it and returns a final result. Microsoft says it supports 60 languages and can produce its first partial hypotheses just over 100 milliseconds after audio is received. As of October 3, 2026, Microsoft Learn lists the service as a public preview with no service-level agreement and says it is not recommended for production workloads.
What MAI-Transcribe-2-Streaming does
Microsoft AI announced MAI-Transcribe-2-Streaming on October 1, 2026, describing it as the company’s first streaming transcription model. Rather than waiting for a person to finish a sentence or recording before returning text, it streams partial results as audio arrives. Those early hypotheses can change as more context comes in; the service then commits stable text and provides a final transcript. Microsoft describes the model as supporting real-time transcription in 60 languages with automatic language detection.
Microsoft says first hypotheses arrive just over 100 ms after audio is received. That is a vendor-published figure, not an independently measured result in the sources reviewed. The precise experience for an application will also depend on the audio path, network, integration and how the application handles partial text.
Why interim transcripts matter for voice agents
Streaming transcription can let an application start responding to a user’s intent before the user has finished speaking. A voice-agent loop might send incoming audio to the transcription service, use partial text to begin reasoning or prepare a tool call, and then generate a spoken reply after enough of the turn is clear. That can reduce dead time compared with a design that waits for a complete utterance before doing any work.

Partials are provisional, however. If an application acts on a changing hypothesis too soon, it could start the wrong task or interrupt the speaker. Developers need to decide which actions are safe to begin early and which should wait for stable or final text. The intended design is not proof that every system built with it will feel natural, respond correctly or be safe.
Availability: public preview, not a production-ready promise
Microsoft Learn labels MAI-Transcribe-2-Streaming a public preview. Microsoft says the preview has no service-level agreement and is not recommended for production workloads. That makes the preview status central to any adoption decision: the launch announcement and documentation establish access and intended uses, but do not establish production service guarantees.

Microsoft’s overview identifies call centers, voice assistants, meeting and lecture captions, voice-driven interfaces and real-time note-taking as potential live-audio workloads. It describes two integration options: an OpenAI Realtime-compatible WebSocket integration or the Azure Speech SDK. Microsoft characterizes the SDK as a managed client library for connection management, retries and audio streaming.
Microsoft’s accuracy and speed claims
Microsoft says Artificial Analysis ranked the model number one for accuracy on both final and partial transcripts and placed it on the accuracy-versus-latency Pareto frontier. Microsoft also says its internal evaluations produced words in real-time dictation or subtitles twice as fast as its closest competitor. These are claims reported in Microsoft’s October 1 announcement; they should not be read as independently reproduced comparisons here.

A meaningful comparison with another streaming speech-recognition service would need consistent measurements: time to first partial, final and partial transcript error rates, how often partials are revised, language coverage and detection, integration requirements, deployment region, preview or production guarantees, and price per audio hour. A single ranking or latency figure cannot establish how the service will perform for every language, audio condition or application.
Price and access named at launch
Microsoft announced an introductory transcription price of $0.54 per hour of audio through the end of 2026. It is a time-limited launch price, so check Microsoft’s current pricing before budgeting or deployment. The announcement named Microsoft Foundry and the MAI Playground, as well as Vercel and Azure Voice Live among access or integration destinations. It described LiveKit as “coming soon” at launch; that dated wording does not establish its current availability.

How the paired voice-generation models fit
Transcription turns incoming speech into text; speech generation turns text into spoken audio. Microsoft presented MAI-Transcribe-2-Streaming alongside two generation models, but their published prices use different units and should not be compared directly with the transcription price.

These language, latency, speed and price figures are Microsoft’s launch claims, not independent measurements. Microsoft says both voice models support cloning across supported languages using a few seconds of reference audio and include consent guardrails; the announcement does not establish the scope or effectiveness of those controls. The launch’s broader “ultra-realistic” framing concerns a voice-agent experience that combines transcription and generated speech. The cited announcement and product documentation do not independently assess the realism of a complete agent.

Do not confuse it with VibeVoice-ASR-Streaming
Microsoft Research’s September 2026 summary describes VibeVoice-ASR-Streaming, a separate end-to-end research project for streaming speaker-attributed speech recognition. Its “who said what” focus and released model weights and inference code distinguish it from the MAI commercial transcription service. The two names refer to separate projects, not interchangeable versions of one product.
