But accounts of an encounter the previous day differ: India Today reported that Dipke was taken to Marine Drive police station, while Mumbai Police denied detaining him. The available reports do not establish whether he was formally detained.
What happened to Abhijeet Dipke?
Hindustan Times reported that CJP rejected the detention reports on October 2 and that Dipke responded with a selfie from a car. CJP’s post, as quoted by Hindustan Times, said: “This news is as fake as CEC Gyanesh Kumar conducting free and fair elections.” The publication did not name an individual author for that statement, so it is attributable to CJP, not specifically to Dipke. India Today’s October 2 account described a Marine Drive encounter on October 1. It reported that Dipke was with supporters carrying placards and was taken to Marine Drive police station. According to that report, Dipke said an officer asked him to accompany her for tea, he was taken to the station, and he was then told he could leave. He alleged the episode was intended to waste his time. India Today also reported that Mumbai Police denied detaining him. India Today
These are distinct claims: CJP denied the detention reports; India Today reported a police-station visit and Dipke’s account of it; and police denied that he was detained. The cited coverage does not provide a police record establishing the encounter’s formal legal status. It is therefore more accurate to call this a disputed detention report than to say Dipke was arrested or formally detained.

What was the planned Mumbai protest about?
CJP planned to protest on October 2, Gandhi Jayanti, at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Park, also known as Shivaji Park. Hindustan Times said CJP called for Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation, a freeze of the 2025 electoral roll with elections held on that roll, and a transparent, independent process for appointing the next Election Commissioner with civil-society participation. CJP’s concerns about the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, including its allegation that large-scale deletions could affect voting rights, are the organisation’s position—not findings established by the cited news reports.

Did Mumbai Police permit the October 2 gathering?
No. The Indian Express reported that police denied permission for the proposed Shivaji Park gathering. Its September 28 account said police cited a 2013 Bombay High Court order limiting the ground’s use to purposes such as sports, the absence of required Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation permission, and concerns about noise, traffic congestion, and access to nearby hospitals. India Today also reported that the protest had not been permitted, citing restrictions on gatherings, civic permission, and traffic concerns. The Indian Express India Today
Before the planned demonstration, Dipke wrote on X that police had denied permission and threatened a “Jail Bharo Andolan” if CJP were denied the right to protest. The Indian Express quoted his post: “Mumbai Police has denied permission for our protest on October 2. Such tactics to suppress citizens’ voices are unacceptable.” That statement expresses Dipke’s view; the denial of permission does not, by itself, resolve what happened during the later-reported encounter.
