Microsoft Dynamics GP is an enterprise resource planning (ERP) and business management system for small and mid-sized organizations. It can bring functions such as accounting, sales, purchasing, inventory, payroll, manufacturing, and project accounting into one system. Which functions a company can use depends on its installed and registered modules, and some features vary by region.
What does Microsoft Dynamics GP do?
Microsoft describes Dynamics GP as “a business management solution for small and mid-sized organizations that automates and streamlines business processes and helps you manage your business.” In practical terms, it is more than a single-purpose bookkeeping tool: organizations can use it to manage connected operational and financial work. Microsoft’s Dynamics GP overview provides the product definition.

What functions can it cover?
Microsoft documentation groups GP capabilities into several functional areas. The exact setup varies by organization; the list describes areas the product can support, not features guaranteed in every installation. Microsoft’s navigation and component documentation describes these areas and notes that optional features and regional availability affect what is offered.

Manufacturing example
Where the relevant manufacturing features are installed, GP can support work ranging from ordering materials and building finished goods to fulfilling and selling orders. Microsoft’s manufacturing documentation also covers bills of materials, routings, manufacturing orders, work in process, quality, job costing, and planning such as material requirements planning (MRP). These capabilities illustrate the potential breadth of a configured system, not a standard feature set present in every GP deployment. Microsoft manufacturing documentation.

Does every Dynamics GP customer get the same features?
No. Available functionality depends on the modules and components an organization has installed and registered. Feature availability can also differ by geography. When evaluating an existing GP system, check its actual configuration rather than assuming that the product name alone tells you which capabilities are enabled. Microsoft documents the relevant navigation areas and additional components.
What is Dynamics GP’s support status?
Microsoft says Dynamics GP version 18.x follows the Modern Lifecycle Policy. Under the GP-specific policy, product enhancements, regulatory updates, and technical support end on December 31, 2029. Security updates and patches, if needed, may be available until April 30, 2031. These are separate dates: the later security-update period does not mean technical support or product enhancements continue through 2031. Microsoft’s Dynamics GP lifecycle policy.

Can a company move from Dynamics GP to Business Central?
Microsoft documents built-in migration tools for moving data from Dynamics GP 2015 and later to Business Central online. For the on-premises solution, Microsoft specifies SQL Server 2016 or later and a database compatibility level of 130 or higher. Those are stated technical prerequisites, not a complete readiness checklist or a guarantee that every customization, integration, or deployment will transfer unchanged. Licensing dates and entitlements depend on timing and agreement terms. Microsoft said the final day for new customers to license Dynamics GP subscriptions was April 1, 2026; that date has passed. Its June 5, 2025 announcement also describes licensing and service-plan changes effective April 30, 2031.
