Methanol (CH₃OH), also called methyl alcohol or wood alcohol, has one carbon atom and is poisonous. Ethanol (C₂H₅OH), also called ethyl alcohol or EtOH, has two carbon atoms and is the alcohol found in alcoholic beverages. Confusing the two can be fatal: methanol exposure can lead to metabolic acidosis, blindness and death, sometimes after a symptom-free delay.
Methanol in plain terms
Methanol is a colorless, highly flammable liquid with the chemical formula CH₃OH. It is also known as methyl alcohol, wood alcohol or carbinol. Its Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS) number is 67-56-1, and its molecular mass is approximately 32.04 grams per mole.

The name “wood alcohol” comes from older production methods that involved heating wood. Modern methanol is manufactured industrially and is used as a chemical feedstock, solvent, fuel component and processing ingredient. The name does not indicate that contemporary methanol is a natural or safe beverage product.
Methanol is a single-carbon alcohol: one carbon atom is bonded to three hydrogen atoms and to a hydroxyl group (–OH). That compact structure makes it chemically distinct from every two-carbon alcohol, including ethanol. A shared –OH group explains why both liquids are classified as alcohols, not why they have the same safety profile.

What ethanol is
Ethanol is ethyl alcohol, commonly abbreviated EtOH. Its formula is C₂H₅OH, so it contains two carbon atoms rather than methanol’s one. Ethanol is the alcohol used in alcoholic drinks, and it is also used in many industrial, laboratory and fuel applications.
The extra carbon changes the molecule’s physical and biological behavior. Ethanol and methanol can look alike—a clear, colorless liquid—and neither visual inspection nor ordinary smell is a dependable way to identify an unlabeled sample. A container must be identified by its original label and safety documentation, not by appearance.
Methanol versus ethanol: the key differences
| Characteristic | Methanol | Ethanol |
|---|---|---|
| Common names | Methyl alcohol, wood alcohol, carbinol | Ethyl alcohol, EtOH |
| Molecular formula | CH₃OH | C₂H₅OH |
| Carbon atoms | One | Two |
| Molecular mass | About 32.04 g/mol | Not stated in the cited material |
| Appearance | Colorless liquid | Not separately stated in the cited material; may appear similar to methanol |
| Water behavior | Miscible with water | Miscible with water |
| EPA fuel-oxygenate vapor pressure | 121.6 mm Hg | 49–56.5 mm Hg |
| EPA fuel-oxygenate specific gravity | 0.791 | 0.789 |
| Health hazard | Poisonous; exposure can cause acidosis, blindness and death | Health effects and uses vary by concentration and context; the cited material does not provide a full toxicology comparison |
The vapor-pressure and specific-gravity numbers are from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s fuel oxygenate properties table. They are source-specific measurements, not universal constants under every temperature, purity or test method. Methanol’s boiling point is listed by NIOSH as 64.7°C (148.5°F) on one emergency-response page and 147°F in the NIOSH Pocket Guide; the small difference is consistent with rounding or reference conventions. The cited material does not provide a directly comparable ethanol boiling point, so no side-by-side boiling-point claim is made here.
Why the one-carbon difference matters
Adding one carbon atom changes more than a formula on a label. It changes how a liquid evaporates, how it participates in industrial processes and how the body handles it. Both methanol and ethanol are completely miscible with water, so water cannot be used to separate them by simple settling. Their similar appearance and shared alcohol classification are precisely why correct labeling and controlled handling matter.
Methanol’s higher vapor-pressure figure in the EPA table (121.6 mm Hg versus 49–56.5 mm Hg for ethanol in that table) indicates a greater tendency to enter the vapor phase under the measurement conditions used. In workplaces, that difference can affect ventilation and exposure-control planning. It does not by itself determine toxicity, and it should not be treated as a universal value for every mixture or temperature.

How methanol is used
Industrial solvent and chemical manufacturing
NIOSH identifies methanol as an industrial solvent. Manufacturers also use it to make plastics, polyesters and other chemicals. In these settings, methanol is a process chemical handled in closed equipment, approved containers and ventilation systems rather than as a consumer beverage.
Fuel and fuel-related products
Methanol can serve as an alternative fuel. The EPA hazard summary also lists automotive antifreeze, gasoline additive and picnic-stove fuel uses. A fuel application does not make a substance suitable for human consumption: combustion, blending and equipment design are controlled for the chemical’s specific properties.
Deicers and pesticides
Methanol is used in some deicing products and is identified by NIOSH as a pesticide-related industrial chemical. Product labels and safety data sheets determine the permitted handling method, protective equipment and disposal route for a particular formulation.
Why methanol poisoning is so serious
Methanol is poisonous when it enters the body. NIOSH reports that it can be absorbed through the digestive system, lungs and skin, and that it can harm the eyes. Exposure can therefore occur by swallowing a liquid, breathing vapor or allowing liquid to contact skin—especially when contact is prolonged or the skin is damaged.
The danger is not limited to methanol remaining unchanged in the body. Its metabolic products can produce severe metabolic acidosis, damage vision and cause death. “Blindness” in this context is a medical emergency, not a temporary irritation from getting liquid in the eyes.

Early symptoms can be misleading. NIOSH states that adverse effects may take 1 to 72 hours to become apparent. Its emergency-response card cautions: “Early on after methanol exposure, there may be a relative absence of adverse health effects. This does not imply insignificant toxicity.” Feeling well immediately after an exposure is therefore not evidence that the dose was harmless.
Possible exposure routes and warning signs
Ingestion
Swallowing methanol is the most obvious route, but a person may not realize what happened if it was transferred to an unlabeled bottle or mistaken for ethanol. Do not taste an unknown liquid to identify it.
Inhalation
Methanol vapor can be inhaled during pouring, spraying, heating or use in a poorly ventilated area. Vapor exposure is a particular concern because a person may not see the gas or recognize the dose.
Skin and eye contact
Liquid methanol can be absorbed through skin and can injure the eyes. Remove contaminated clothing and rinse exposed skin or eyes with water while obtaining professional medical guidance. Follow the product’s safety data sheet for exact decontamination instructions.
Delayed illness
Symptoms may be absent at first and appear later, within the 1-to-72-hour interval reported by NIOSH. Visual disturbances, worsening illness or breathing changes after a possible exposure require urgent medical attention. Do not wait for a severe symptom to develop.

What to do after suspected methanol exposure
- Call emergency services or a poison-control center immediately. Tell the responder that methanol exposure is suspected, how it occurred, the approximate time and the product name or container information if available.
- Move away from ongoing exposure. Get to fresh air after inhalation exposure if doing so is safe, and avoid creating additional vapor or splashing while helping another person.
- Do not induce vomiting or attempt a home antidote. Do not give ethanol to an exposed person on your own. Clinical teams may use fomepizole and ethanol as antidotes, but treatment requires professional dosing, monitoring and laboratory assessment.
- Bring the label or safety data sheet. Keep the container available for responders without handling it unnecessarily. Do not delay the call while searching for paperwork.
- Continue medical observation even if the person feels normal. The delayed course means an apparently well person can still be developing serious toxicity.
These steps are general emergency guidance, not a substitute for local poison-control or emergency-service instructions. Current workplace limits and response procedures should be checked on the live agency pages applicable to your country and setting.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why ethanol is not a safe substitute for methanol
Ethanol and methanol are chemically different substances. Ethanol’s role in clinical methanol treatment does not mean that drinking alcohol prevents poisoning or makes a contaminated product safe. In hospitals, clinicians select and dose an antidote while monitoring acid-base status and other critical measurements. Home administration can delay definitive care, introduce alcohol poisoning and obscure the exposure history.
Likewise, adding ethanol to a methanol-containing liquid is not a do-it-yourself purification method. Mixtures remain hazardous, and their concentrations cannot be established reliably by taste, smell or appearance.
Handling and storage principles
- Keep methanol in its original, clearly marked container with the cap secured.
- Store it away from ignition sources because it is highly flammable.
- Use ventilation and the protective equipment specified by the product’s safety data sheet.
- Prevent skin and eye contact; do not rely on ordinary household gloves unless the manufacturer confirms chemical compatibility.
- Never transfer methanol into beverage bottles, cups or containers that could be mistaken for drinking water or ethanol.
- Keep it away from children, food and drink, and dispose of waste through the approved hazardous-chemical route.
Common misconceptions
“Both are alcohol, so they are interchangeable.”
No. The formulas differ, the carbon counts differ and the health hazards differ. A shared chemical class does not make one alcohol a substitute for another.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute“A clear liquid that smells like alcohol must be ethanol.”
No. Methanol can also be a clear liquid, and smell is not a reliable identification method. Use the original label, supplier documentation and appropriate analytical procedures.
Best Value
“No symptoms means no poisoning.”
No. Methanol toxicity can be delayed for up to 72 hours in the NIOSH description. Immediate medical advice is warranted after a credible exposure.
“Water will neutralize or remove methanol.”
No. Methanol and ethanol are both miscible with water. Water may be part of first-aid rinsing for skin or eyes, but it does not make an ingested or inhaled dose harmless.
How to read a methanol or ethanol label
Start with the chemical name and formula rather than the generic word “alcohol.” “Methyl alcohol,” “methanol,” “wood alcohol” and CAS 67-56-1 identify methanol. “Ethyl alcohol” and “EtOH” identify ethanol. Then check concentration, intended use, hazard statements, ventilation requirements, personal protective equipment and first-aid directions.

A product marketed for one use should not be repurposed for another, even when its label includes the word alcohol.
What is established—and what should not be overgeneralized
The strongest documented distinction is identity: CH₃OH is methanol and C₂H₅OH is ethanol. The safety evidence is also clear for methanol’s poisoning potential, exposure routes and delayed effects. The cited material provides selected EPA physical-property values and methanol’s boiling point, but not a complete, same-condition property table or full toxicology profile for ethanol. Comparisons beyond those documented values should therefore be made with a source that specifies temperature, purity, concentration and measurement method.
For workplace decisions, consult current NIOSH, EPA, occupational-health and local emergency guidance. Agency pages can be updated, and legal exposure limits may differ by jurisdiction and application.
Bottom line
Methanol is a one-carbon alcohol (CH₃OH) used in industrial solvents, fuels, deicers, pesticides and chemical manufacturing. Ethanol is a two-carbon alcohol (C₂H₅OH), also called EtOH. Both mix with water, but methanol is poisonous: exposure through swallowing, breathing vapor or skin contact can lead to delayed metabolic acidosis, blindness and death. Treat any suspected exposure as an emergency, do not wait for symptoms and never use beverage alcohol as a home treatment.
