MadWorld is a mobile third-person shooter from Carbonated, Inc., developed with the open-source Open 3D Engine (O3DE) for iOS and Android. The Open 3D Foundation described it as the first mobile title powered by O3DE. Its announced design pairs multiplayer shooting and progression with a strategic map where players fight over territory.
What is MadWorld?
MadWorld is a dystopian mobile shooter in which players take on enemies around the world and play with friends across multiple maps and game modes. Carbonated’s announcement describes it as a third-person shooter with both combat and a broader progression layer. The game’s strategic map is intended to let players control territory and earn tributes, with fights tied to real-world places such as New York’s Hell’s Kitchen and streets in Seoul. Is MadWorld built on O3DE?
Yes. Carbonated said it was using O3DE to develop MadWorld. The Open 3D Foundation called it “the first mobile title powered by O3DE” in its March 18, 2024 announcement. That is the foundation’s claim about the engine’s first mobile title, rather than an independently audited industry-wide distinction. Carbonated CTO Lloyd Tullues said O3DE’s features and flexible architecture helped the team use current mobile hardware and technologies.
How O3DE supports MadWorld on mobile
The foundation highlighted O3DE’s rendering, dynamic lighting and physics simulation as tools for creating MadWorld’s dystopian environments and action gameplay. It linked those capabilities to the game’s visual quality, performance and scalability goals on phones and tablets.

In an October 15, 2024 release announcement, O3DE said Carbonated adapted the game using its new mobile rendering pipeline. It also cited deferred fog and custom shaders in Material Canvas as examples of visual features used to refine MadWorld. Tullues said the release’s enhancements gave the game a competitive edge. What makes MadWorld different from other mobile shooters?
The announced distinction is its combination of third-person shooting with a territory-control layer. Rather than describing matches as the whole game, Carbonated’s release presents combat, progression and a global strategic map as connected parts of the experience. Players are expected to contest locations and earn tributes through the map system.

Its use of O3DE is another notable part of the announcement: the foundation presented MadWorld as the first mobile title built on the engine. The announcements identify iOS and Android as MadWorld’s target platforms. The October 2024 O3DE release note said an iOS and Android launch was planned for later that year. That planned window does not establish whether the game is currently available, in which countries it may be listed, or whether its release plans changed. Check Carbonated’s MadWorld site or the relevant app store for current availability.
