LVFS (Linux Vendor Firmware Service) is an open-source service for distributing firmware and update metadata supplied by hardware vendors. It is distinct from fwupd, the local software that applies firmware updates to a device. The Linux Foundation welcomed LVFS as a project on March 26, 2019, describing its growth from a small updater for an open-hardware colorimeter into shared Linux infrastructure.
What does LVFS do?
Hardware vendors upload redistributable firmware and metadata to LVFS. The announcement describes firmware packaged in an industry-standard .cab archive with Linux-specific metadata. Client software—including fwupdmgr, GNOME Software, and KDE Discover—can show users available updates.

In practical terms, LVFS is the distribution service; fwupd is the local daemon that session software uses to perform updates on the device. The two work together, but they are not interchangeable: LVFS makes vendor-provided firmware available, while fwupd handles applying an update locally.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
How did the project begin?
In the Linux Foundation’s March 26, 2019 announcement, Richard Hughes traced the work to ColorHug, his hobby project to build an open-hardware colorimeter. He first created a command-line updater, then a graphical one. Initially, the updater retrieved a list of available versions from an XML file hosted on his homepage.
Dell provided early support. The announcement credits Dell’s Mario Limonciello with work on the LVFS website and fwupd. Over time, fwupd’s plugins enabled support for multiple update protocols, and people at several companies contributed to LVFS and fwupd. The project’s history is therefore not just about putting firmware files online: it also involved building software and integrations that let Linux systems find and apply vendor updates.

What did the 2019 announcement report?
At publication on March 26, 2019, The Linux Foundation said LVFS supported firmware updates on 72 devices from about 30 vendors and had supplied more than 5 million firmware updates to Linux clients. Those are figures reported for that date, not current totals.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsA later Linux Foundation milestone provides a separate snapshot: on December 18, 2023, it reported that LVFS had surpassed 100 million firmware updates. The organization also said updates could be freely redistributed without tracking, and that large organizations could mirror LVFS for offline use. This is a published milestone, not a live count.

What changed in 2026?
On August 6, 2026, The Linux Foundation announced Dell Technologies, HP Inc., Lenovo, and NVIDIA as LVFS Premier Members. It described LVFS as integrating with fwupd, fwupdmgr, and GNOME Software, and highlighted the service’s role in Linux firmware distribution, including for enterprise fleets.
Membership is an ecosystem-level commitment, not confirmation that every product from a member has an LVFS update. For a specific system or component, verify support for its exact model and the firmware release in question.

Why did Hughes want LVFS to become infrastructure?
Hughes described his long-term ambition in the 2019 announcement: “My long-term goal is for the LVFS to be seen like a boring, critical part of infrastructure in Linux, much like you’d consider a NTP server for accurate time, or a PGP keyserver for trust.” The comparison captures the project’s purpose: firmware updates should be a dependable part of Linux computing rather than an obscure, vendor-specific process users must discover on their own.
