What Is Low-Entry Networking (LEN) in SNA?

Low-entry networking is an SNA T2.1 peer capability for adjacent LU 6.2 sessions. Unlike APPN nodes, LEN nodes do not discover resources or route sessions to nonadjacent nodes.

Low-entry networking (LEN) is an SNA Type 2.1 (T2.1) peer-networking capability. A LEN node can connect to an adjacent peer and establish LU 6.2 sessions, but it does not provide APPN control-point services such as resource discovery or topology exchange. Remote resources and the first link used to reach them therefore need to be defined in advance.

What does low-entry networking mean?

In IBM’s terminology, a low-entry networking node is a T2.1 node. The name describes a specific SNA node capability—not a general network that is cheap or easy to join. IBM describes LEN as an early stage in APPN’s evolution, introduced in the mid-1980s to address peer-networking requirements.

LEN supports peer connectivity and LU 6.2 session communication with adjacent nodes. IBM states that “Low-entry networking nodes do not implement a control point.” This means LEN lacks APPN control-point functions; it does not mean a LEN node is unable to communicate.

How does a LEN node differ from APPN?

T2.1 describes an underlying peer-networking architecture. Depending on the software implemented, a T2.1 node may function as a LEN node or provide APPN end-node or network-node capabilities. A T2.1 node does not automatically have APPN services.

Capability LEN node APPN end node APPN network node
APPN control-point functions No Yes Yes
Resource and topology exchange No Uses an adjacent network-node server for nonadjacent resources Provides APPN network services, including resource location
Remote-resource definitions Remote partner resources and the first hop must be predefined Can use a network-node server to access nonadjacent resources Locates resources through APPN services
Routing sessions to nonadjacent nodes No Relies on a network-node server Can route sessions through the APPN network

These are role distinctions, not a guarantee that every implementation offers the same configuration interface. IBM explains the node roles in its overview of node types in a peer network.

What must be configured in advance?

Because LEN does not search for remote resources or exchange network topology, the system definitions must identify remote partner resources and the first-hop link to them. This makes remote communication more dependent on advance configuration than in an APPN network.

LEN can reduce some system-definition work: for example, the link-station roles do not need to be negotiated during connection. That does not remove the need to define the remote resources and path beforehand. IBM describes this distinction in its LEN node documentation.

Can a LEN node route traffic between other nodes?

No. Consider a chain A—B—C where B is LEN-only. A and B may establish a session, and B and C may establish a separate session, but B cannot route a session from A to C. IBM’s example says that before APPN, communication between nonadjacent nodes required either a direct physical link between them or an application on B to relay messages.

Adjacent peer connectivity and routing are different capabilities: LEN supports the former, not the latter. IBM’s Introduction to the New Mainframe: Networking explains the example and the role distinction.

Where does LU 6.2 fit?

LU 6.2 is the session protocol associated with this peer connectivity. Cisco’s glossary describes LEN as supporting direct attachment using basic peer-to-peer protocols for parallel LU 6.2 sessions without APPN. This corroborates that LU 6.2 communication can exist on a LEN connection even though the node does not perform APPN discovery or routing.
