llms.txt is a proposed plain-text Markdown file that gives AI systems a concise overview of a website and links to selected pages. On WordPress, you can publish it by uploading a file to your site root or using a generator plugin. It is not a crawler-permission file, and publishing it does not guarantee that an AI system will read or cite your site.
What llms.txt does—and what it does not do
The proposal for llms.txt is to give a reader or AI agent a compact, useful guide to a site: a short description followed by links to important public pages. It is intended to be consulted on demand by an agent that chooses to use it. The proposal distinguishes it from robots.txt, which communicates crawler access preferences. A sitemap serves a different purpose by listing URLs for discovery; llms.txt does not replace either file. Read the llms.txt proposal.

Do not treat the file as a ranking tactic or a guarantee of AI visibility. The Project LLMs.txt plugin listing says, “No major search engine or LLM provider has officially announced that they seek out llms.txt files.” A plugin’s ability to generate the file does not mean a model will use it. For WordPress.com, the support page reviewed August 12, 2026, documents the manual feature for Business and Commerce plans. It also notes that plugins such as Yoast SEO or Rank Math may be used, with setup instructions supplied by the respective plugin.

Option 1: Publish the file manually
- Choose public pages. Select useful destinations such as product or service pages, About, documentation, policies, and important articles. Include only pages you want readers to discover.
- Write the file. In a text editor, create a plain-text file named
llms.txt. Add a site heading, a brief summary, Markdown section headings, and full URLs with accurate descriptions. Group related links under headings such as Products, Company, or Documentation. - Upload it to the root. Connect to the site using SFTP and place the file in the WordPress.com site root, identified in its guide as
htdocs. Keep the filename lowercase and exact. - Check the public address. Visit
https://your-domain/llms.txtin a browser and confirm that the intended contents appear.
Option 2: Generate it with a plugin
Project LLMs.txt
- In WordPress, go to Plugins → Add New, search for Project LLMs.txt, then install and activate it.
- Review its site and content-type settings so the output reflects the pages you intend to expose.
- Select Generate Now, then test the public
/llms.txtaddress.
The plugin lists WordPress 6.4+ and PHP 8.1+ as its requirements. If the host will not allow a physical file to be written to the WordPress root, its Live Endpoint mode serves the file through rewrite rules instead.
Website LLMs.txt
This plugin says it maintains the file from published content and supports immediate, daily, or weekly generation. Its documentation describes excluding content marked noindex or nofollow in supported SEO plugins, and excluding content unavailable to anonymous visitors. If /llms.txt returns a 404 after generation, its suggested remedies are to clear plugin caches or resave permalinks. These behaviors are specific to this plugin; verify the selected plugin’s settings and output.

What to include—and what to leave out
Keep the file concise and useful. Give an accurate summary of the site, then link to selected public pages under descriptive headings. A short explanation should tell a reader what each destination contains; avoid an undifferentiated dump of every URL. Review the output for stale links and confirm that a generator has not included private or access-controlled material.
Some tools also offer llms-full.txt, a companion containing full Markdown content. It is optional, not part of the required core setup; LLMs.txt Curator’s documentation says llms.txt alone is sufficient. LLMs.txt Curator documentation.

Verify the file after publishing
- Open
https://your-domain/llms.txtwhile logged out or in a private browser window. - Confirm the page displays the intended file rather than a 404, login page, or unrelated response.
- Check that each link is current and leads to the page described.
- Review plugin output for private, restricted, or otherwise unintended content.
- If a plugin-generated file returns 404, check its serving mode; Website LLMs.txt suggests clearing caches or resaving permalinks.
Does llms.txt improve AI visibility?
That outcome is not established by the cited proposal or WordPress plugin documentation. The file provides structured context for an agent that chooses to consult it; it cannot compel a crawler or model to access, understand, or cite a site. Publish it if a curated, machine-readable guide is useful for your site, but do not rely on it as a ranking or citation guarantee.
