In Ethereum’s terminology, an L2 is not simply any separate or offchain network: it is a scaling system that derives its security from Ethereum Mainnet. Rollups are the main example.
What does Layer 2 scaling mean?
Layer 1 (L1) is the base blockchain. Here, that means Ethereum Mainnet. A Layer 2 system handles transactions or other activity away from Mainnet, then connects back to it for security, verification, or settlement. The aim is to reduce the amount of work Mainnet must perform directly, which can help address congestion, slow user experiences, and high gas costs during periods of heavy demand. The term is sometimes used more loosely for any network that operates alongside a base chain. Ethereum.org uses a narrower, security-based definition: a system counts as an Ethereum L2 when it derives its security from Mainnet. A connection such as a bridge, by itself, does not establish that security relationship.
How do Layer 2 systems connect to Ethereum?
Different designs move work off Mainnet and connect back in different ways. Rollups execute transactions outside Layer 1 and post data to Layer 1, where consensus is reached. Channels let participants exchange updates offchain and later settle with Mainnet. The architecture affects where transaction data is kept and how activity is checked or resolved.

Rollups
Rollups bundle or process transactions offchain and post data to Ethereum. They use different methods to establish that the transactions are valid:
- Optimistic rollups assume transactions are valid by default and provide a challenge process for disputing an invalid result. Ethereum.org’s optimistic-rollup overview describes this approach.
- Zero-knowledge rollups submit validity proofs to demonstrate that transactions follow the rules. In this context, “zero-knowledge” refers to a proof method; the label alone does not mean transaction details are private. See Ethereum.org’s zero-knowledge-rollup overview.
Neither category is automatically faster, cheaper, or safer than the other in every implementation. Those qualities depend on the specific network and its current design.

State channels
A state channel lets participants make multiple updates offchain and settle the result with Mainnet. Opening and closing the channel involve onchain transactions. This differs from a rollup’s approach of posting transaction data to Layer 1. Ethereum.org’s state-channel documentation explains the model.

Validium and plasma as boundary examples
Ethereum.org’s scaling overview also describes validium and plasma. Validium uses validity proofs but stores data away from Layer 1, unlike a rollup that posts transaction data to Layer 1. Plasma is a separate chain anchored to Ethereum and uses fraud proofs. These examples show why “scales Ethereum” and “inherits Ethereum security in the same way as a rollup” are not interchangeable claims.

Is a sidechain an Ethereum Layer 2?
Not under Ethereum.org’s security-based definition. A sidechain is an independent blockchain that runs alongside Mainnet, connects through a bridge, and follows its own consensus and security rules. It may be discussed as a scaling approach in a broader sense, but it does not inherit Ethereum security merely because users can bridge assets between it and Mainnet. Ethereum.org’s scaling overview distinguishes sidechains from systems that derive security from Mainnet.

- Security source: Does the system derive security from Ethereum Mainnet, or rely on its own consensus and operators?
- Execution: Where are transactions executed, and what information or results are sent back to Layer 1?
- Data availability: Is transaction data posted to Mainnet or stored elsewhere? This changes the security assumptions.
- Verification and disputes: Does the design use challenges or fraud proofs, validity proofs, or channel settlement?
- User experience: Check the network’s current fees, withdrawal timing, bridge design, and operator controls. These vary by system and can change over time.
Ethereum.org’s architecture explanations do not establish a universal transaction speed, fee reduction, or withdrawal time for all L2s. Treat those figures as network-specific claims, not properties guaranteed by the label.
