It is a Portuguese military base with a civil airport terminal, and the United States provides support there; it is not a US-owned installation. Its position in the mid-Atlantic makes it a useful link for transatlantic aircraft movement, logistics and allied operations.
What is Lajes Field?
Lajes Field is the aerodrome identified as LPLA and the home of Portugal’s Air Base No. 4. Portugal’s Aeronautical Information Publication (AIP), section LPLA AD 2, lists ANA Aeroportos de Portugal as the civil operator and the Commander of Air Base No. 4, Portuguese Air Force, as the military operator. That makes Lajes a joint civil-and-military aerodrome under Portuguese operation, not a US base in the sense of ownership.

The US maintains a force-support role at Lajes. The US Department of Defense says the 65th Air Base Wing supports US, allied and other authorized aircraft transiting the installation. Its stated tasks include moving personnel and aircraft, providing base and en-route support, and enabling joint, coalition and NATO operations (US Department of Defense: Lajes Field overview).

Its mid-Atlantic location connects Europe and North America
The Azores lie in the North Atlantic between Europe and North America. The Defense Department describes Lajes as being on Terceira’s northeast tip, approximately 2,200 miles east of New York City and 900 miles west of Lisbon. Those approximate distances help explain its value as a transit and logistics point for aircraft crossing the Atlantic.
#1 Best Overall
- Detailed Aircraft Toy: Die-cast metal Cessna C172 Skyhawk aircraft featuring detailed design and real markings.
- Runway Section Included: Includes a flexible rubber runway section that can be used with other RUNWAY24 sets.
- Build Your Own Airport: Combine runway sections from different RUNWAY24 sets to create your own airport setup.
- Military Aviation Design: Features a military aviation-style aircraft with realistic markings for imaginative play and collecting.
- Ages 3+: Designed for ages 3 and up, making it a fun addition to aircraft collections and imaginative play.
For the 65th Air Base Wing, that location supports expeditionary movement and en-route assistance to aircraft and personnel. The base is strategically useful not simply because it has an airfield, but because it can connect long-distance movements with support along the route.
The wider Azores add Atlantic surveillance and communications value
Lajes’ importance also sits within the strategic geography of the Azores. NATO’s history of Portugal describes the islands’ role in Atlantic air bridges and the defence of sea-trading lines, and identifies regional functions such as refueling, communications, maritime surveillance and submarine tracking (NATO: Portugal and NATO’s history). In March 2026, the Vice-President of the Regional Government of the Azores likewise described Lajes as a logistics hub for military operations, maritime surveillance, communications, strategic transport and NATO support (Regional Government of the Azores, 18 March 2026).

These are regional and institutional descriptions of the Azores’ strategic value; they do not establish that every listed capability is based at Lajes today. The specific Lajes roles documented by the Defense Department are aircraft and personnel movement, base and en-route support, and support for authorized transiting aircraft.
Who operates Lajes, and what happens there?
Portuguese civil and military operations
The Portuguese AIP identifies separate civil and military operators for LPLA: ANA operates the civil side, while the Commander of BA4 is the military operator. Its entry gives the aerodrome reference point as 38°45′43″N, 27°05′27″W and an elevation of 55 m (180 ft) at runway threshold 33. These are aeronautical reference details from the AIP section valid 6 August 2026 (NAV Portugal Aeronautical Information Service).

- Die-cast metal historical airplane
- Includes display stand
- Part of the postage stamp collection
Portugal’s Ministry of National Defence reported on 1 August 2025 that Portuguese Air Force capabilities at BA4 included Squadron 752, a C-295M detachment and the EH-101 Merlin search-and-rescue helicopter service. The ministry noted that the Merlin had conducted search-and-rescue operations for 20 years at that point (Portuguese Ministry of National Defence, 1 August 2025). This is a dated account of capabilities, not a complete inventory or assurance that deployments have remained unchanged.
US, allied and other authorized aircraft in transit
The 65th Air Base Wing’s stated mission is to enable movement of warfighters, aircraft and global communications, and to provide base and en-route support for Department of Defense, allied and other authorized aircraft transiting Lajes. This describes a support role for transit and operations; it should not be read as an inventory of every unit or capability present at the installation.

How is foreign military use governed?
Foreign military use is subject to Portuguese procedures. In a March 2026 statement, Portugal’s Prime Minister described two schemes for foreign military aircraft: general prior notice and specific authorization under the technical bilateral agreement with the United States. He said that, following a strike, Portugal had received a formal request and granted authorization conditionally, subject to international-law principles including defensive or retaliatory purpose, necessity, proportionality and military targets (Portuguese Government, Prime Minister’s statement, March 2026).
That account concerns a specific reported authorization, not a claim that every foreign military flight follows the same route through the process. The broader point is that Lajes’ geography does not remove Portugal’s role in governing its use.

What is Lajes Field’s historical significance?
NATO records that Lajes on Terceira was used by NATO and US forces during the Cold War. The airfield’s location gave it relevance to Atlantic air routes and allied activity across the ocean (NATO: Portugal and NATO’s history).
A Portugal–US Strategic Bilateral Commission statement on its 2019 session called Lajes strategically important to Atlantic and global security. It also discussed a future Atlantic Center based at Lajes and a NATO Maritime Geospatial, Meteorological and Oceanographic Centre of Excellence (US–Portugal Strategic Bilateral Commission, 2019 session). The statement documents those proposals and intentions; it does not by itself establish that either proposed centre is operational now.
Quick Recap
What to take from Lajes’ strategic role
- It is Portuguese-operated: Portugal’s AIP names the civil and military operators, while the United States has a support role.
- Its geography enables transit: the mid-Atlantic position makes Lajes useful for aircraft movement and en-route logistics between North America and Europe.
- Some strategic functions belong to the wider region: NATO and Azores government descriptions of surveillance, communications and submarine tracking concern the Azores’ broader role, not necessarily capabilities housed at the base.
- Its use is shaped by policy as well as geography: Portuguese authorities retain procedures for foreign military aircraft, and the rules described in March 2026 related to a particular authorization.
