Juice jacking is a possible attack that uses a compromised USB charging connection to try to transfer malware to a device or access its data. The simplest precaution is to charge from your own wall adapter and cable plugged into an electrical outlet, or use a power bank, rather than connecting directly to an unfamiliar public USB port.
How juice jacking could work
A USB connection can carry both electrical power and data. If a charging port or cable is compromised, it could potentially use that data path to communicate with a connected phone. That is the basis of the term “juice jacking.” U.S. Army Cyber Command uses this definition in its 2022 fact sheet, while consumer guidance from New York State and Michigan also describes compromised public ports and infected cables as possible routes.

The technical possibility has been demonstrated in a specific research setting. A 2016 paper, No Free Charge Theorem: A Covert Channel via USB Charging Cable on Mobile Devices, described a controlled prototype that exfiltrated selected information through a USB charging cable without using normal data-transfer functionality or asking the user for permission. That result establishes that a particular technique was demonstrated; it does not establish how often attacks happen, whether today’s phones are vulnerable in the same way, or whether public charging stations are commonly compromised.

There is no reliable prevalence statistic or incident count to quote from the sources reviewed for this topic. CISA’s November 16, 2023 article said its author had not seen evidence that juice jacking was occurring and reported that the FCC was not aware of confirmed cases at that time. CISA distinguished between an attack being possible, probable, and supported by evidence of active exploitation.

That assessment is time-bound: it describes what CISA and the FCC reported in November 2023, not a comprehensive count of all incidents since then. It is a reason to avoid alarmist claims, not proof that an attack is impossible.
How to avoid juice jacking
- Use your own wall charger and cable. Plug them into a conventional electrical outlet, not into a public USB socket. CISA advises travelers not to connect devices to computers or charging stations they do not control; New York State’s consumer guidance likewise recommends a wall socket and personal charging equipment.
- Use a power bank when you cannot reach an outlet. Charge the power bank ahead of time, then connect your phone to it instead of an unfamiliar USB port. New York State specifically recommends carrying a portable battery charger.
- Avoid unfamiliar cables, too. A compromised cable supplied by someone else is another possible path, according to Michigan’s Attorney General. Prefer a cable you brought yourself.
- If a public USB port is unavoidable, consider a data blocker. An inline USB data blocker or charge-only adapter is intended to prevent data transmission through the connection while allowing charging. New York State and Army Cyber Command recommend this type of precaution. Treat it as a fallback, not as proof that the port is trustworthy; check that the accessory matches your connector and charging needs. No particular product has been evaluated here.
- Read any connection prompt before responding. If your device offers a choice such as sharing data or charging only, choose charge-only. Prompt wording and behavior vary by device and software version, so these general instructions are not a substitute for model-specific support guidance.
Choosing a charging option
| Option | Connects the phone to an unknown USB host? | What you need | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Your wall charger and cable in an electrical outlet | No | An outlet and your charger and cable | Preferred straightforward option when an outlet is available |
| Portable power bank | No, when charging from the bank rather than a public USB port | A charged power bank | Travel or other situations without a convenient outlet |
| USB data blocker or charge-only adapter | It is intended to block data on the USB connection | A compatible inline accessory | Optional fallback if you must use a USB port |
| Public USB port without a blocker | Yes | A public USB port | Avoid if possible; if used, select charge-only if prompted |
What to remember
Juice jacking describes a technically possible misuse of the data path in a USB charging connection, not an established measure of how often public ports are attacked. For an everyday charging decision, use your own wall adapter and cable or a power bank. If neither is practical and you must use an unfamiliar USB port, a compatible data blocker is an optional extra precaution.
