It hosts websites, web services, and applications. The title phrase “Internet Information Server” is a common way to refer to IIS, but Microsoft’s official name is Internet Information Services.
What IIS is—and what it is not
IIS is server software, not a computer, operating system, or programming language. It runs on Windows and provides the hosting environment that receives requests for websites and applications, then processes them using the site’s configuration and installed components.

A hosted site may serve static files or run an application. The application’s language and runtime are separate from IIS itself; IIS provides the Windows-based web-hosting platform around them.
What IIS is used for
IIS can be configured for different hosting workloads. Microsoft documents examples that include:
#1 Best Overall
- Static websites
- Classic ASP and ASP.NET websites
- ASP.NET Core applications hosted on Windows, including on-premises or hybrid Windows Server environments
- FTP sites
- Web farms
These are possible hosting scenarios, not features that every IIS installation automatically enables. Available capabilities depend on the Windows and IIS versions and on which components are installed.
How IIS handles requests
IIS uses Windows components to receive and manage requests. HTTP.sys handles HTTP traffic, while the World Wide Web Publishing Service supports web publishing. Windows Process Activation Service (WAS) provides activation capabilities that can support protocols beyond HTTP and HTTPS for compatible sites and services.

Administrators can add, remove, or replace IIS modules and components to fit a workload. That modular design can reduce unused code and the server’s exposed surface area, but modularity alone does not make a server secure; security also depends on configuration, updates, access controls, and operational practices.

IIS application pools group worker processes and provide process boundaries between groups of hosted applications. Separating applications into different pools can help limit the impact of a problem in one pool on applications in another. It is not a guarantee against every failure or a complete security boundary.

When IIS may be a suitable choice
IIS is relevant when a workload needs Windows-based hosting, compatibility with its supported application runtime, or integration with Windows administration and services. Before choosing a web server, check the application’s runtime requirements, the deployment environment, needed authentication and modules, and the administration and security work your team can support. IIS’s Windows context and range of hosting scenarios do not by themselves establish that it is faster, safer, or easier than another web server.
