Hugging Face is a company and a collaboration platform for machine learning—not a single AI model or chatbot. Its Hub lets people and organizations share models, datasets, and interactive applications, while related tools and paid services support building and running machine-learning projects.
What is Hugging Face?
Hugging Face is both a company and a platform for the machine-learning community. The Hub is its public-facing center: a place to discover, share, and collaborate on machine-learning resources. Hugging Face also develops software libraries used to load, process, fine-tune, and deploy models.

That distinction matters: a model you find on the Hub may have been created or uploaded by an individual or another organization. Hosting an artifact does not mean Hugging Face built it, audited it, or endorses it.

The Hub contains different kinds of repositories and applications. They serve different purposes, so a model, a dataset, and a Space should not be treated as interchangeable.
#1 Best Overall
Models
Model repositories provide machine-learning artifacts and related files. Depending on the model and its intended use, those files may include weights, code, configuration, and documentation. Check the repository for its license, provenance, evaluation evidence, language coverage, and technical requirements before choosing or deploying it.
Datasets
Dataset repositories contain data and documentation. Hugging Face says it generally does not source community datasets itself; uploaders are encouraged to document relevant details. Check who provided the data, how it was collected, its time period and population, language representation, known skews, and license. A dataset’s presence on the Hub does not establish that it is representative or suitable for your use.
Rank #2
Spaces
Spaces are interactive demonstrations or applications. They can help you try an example, but an interface alone does not tell you what model or data powers it, whether it is appropriate for a consequential decision, or what constraints apply. Look for the underlying repository and its documentation.

How should you evaluate a model or dataset?
Documentation can help explain intended uses, limitations, training or data details, and other context. Model cards and dataset cards are useful documentation conventions, not independent audits or proof that an artifact is safe, reliable, or suitable for every task.

When comparing models
- Match the model’s task and stated intended use to your actual application.
- Read its license and investigate upstream lineage rather than relying only on the current repository’s description.
- Review training-data documentation, language coverage, and evaluation evidence relevant to your users.
- Check technical requirements and deployment constraints, including the resources needed to run it.
When comparing datasets
- Check provenance, collection period, population, and language representation.
- Look for known skews and consider whether the data matches the people and conditions in your intended application.
- Read the license and any relevant documentation before reusing the data.
These checks are practical decision factors, not a Hugging Face certification or scoring system. If documentation is missing or unclear, treat that as uncertainty—not as evidence that the risk is absent.
Does “open” mean you can use it however you want?
No. Hugging Face describes machine-learning systems along a spectrum: some expose only outputs, while others make more artifacts—such as weights, code, training data, or process details—available. “Open source” is a specific term, not a catch-all for every point on that spectrum. Being able to access or download an artifact does not, by itself, establish that commercial reuse or every other downstream use is permitted.
Rank #4
Read the exact license and check any upstream terms that may apply. A 2025 study by Benjamin Laufer, Hamidah Oderinwale, and Jon Kleinberg analyzed 1.86 million Hugging Face models. In that corpus, the authors describe model fine-tuning lineages and report license drift toward more permissive or copyleft terms, sometimes in ways they characterize as violations of upstream terms. They also report movement from multilingual compatibility toward English-only compatibility and model cards becoming shorter and more templated. These are findings about the study’s analyzed models, not a verdict on every repository or the legal status of a particular model. Read the study.

Discovery and sharing on the Hub coexist with paid services. Hugging Face describes its business model as providing advanced features and access to compute for AI. Its billing documentation covers subscriptions for individual and organizational features, usage-based compute charges, and additional charges for private storage. Organizations can also encounter cloud-provider partnerships and marketplace billing options.

What should you take away from Hugging Face’s scale?
The Hub is a large ecosystem, but a single model count would not tell you whether a particular artifact is well-documented, appropriately licensed, or fit for your project. The 1.86 million figure above is the size of one 2025 study’s analyzed corpus, not a current count of every model on the Hub. For a real project, repository-level checks matter more than a headline platform total.
