HarmonyOS is Huawei’s operating-system platform and connected-device ecosystem. It is not a single, unchanging software release: Huawei has announced HarmonyOS NEXT, published HarmonyOS 6 release materials, and introduced a HarmonyOS 7 developer beta. Availability and capabilities depend on the version and region; as of Huawei’s October 2026 support guidance, HarmonyOS 7 upgrades are currently limited to mainland China.
What is HarmonyOS?
HarmonyOS is Huawei’s platform for its phones, tablets, PCs and other connected devices. Huawei describes HarmonyOS 7 as based on the open-source OpenHarmony project. The platform is also an ecosystem: Huawei presents it as a way for compatible devices and services to work together, rather than only as software installed on a phone.

That description needs a version label. Huawei announced HarmonyOS NEXT in October 2024, published release information for HarmonyOS 6.0.0 in 2025, and announced the HarmonyOS 7 Developer Beta on June 12, 2026. Those names and dates describe successive releases, not interchangeable names for one fixed feature set.
How is HarmonyOS different from Android and iOS?
The most useful distinction for a prospective user is the ecosystem behind the software. HarmonyOS is Huawei’s platform, Android is the competing mobile platform, and iOS is Apple’s mobile platform. The practical choice depends less on a slogan about which system is “best” and more on whether a specific device is supported where you live, whether it runs the apps and services you need, and how it fits with your other devices.

Which HarmonyOS version is available?
HarmonyOS NEXT
Huawei formally released HarmonyOS NEXT and opened a public beta to additional models on October 23, 2024. Its announcement described distributed multi-device connectivity and reported more than 15,000 native apps and meta-services at that time. That historical app-and-service count uses wording and a date that make it different from Huawei’s later, broader ecosystem figure.

HarmonyOS 6
Huawei’s developer release page lists the HarmonyOS 6.0.0 Release SDK, based on the OpenHarmony SDK, as released on September 25, 2025. In a June 2026 announcement, Huawei said more than 66 million HarmonyOS 6 terminal devices were in use; that count was later superseded by a combined HarmonyOS 6 and 7 figure.

Huawei announced the HarmonyOS 7 Developer Beta on June 12, 2026. Its consumer support FAQ, consulted on October 7, 2026, says the public version remains in beta/public-beta stages and that upgrades are currently available only in mainland China. This is a current rollout statement, not a guarantee about future availability. Check Huawei’s update channel for the exact model and region before relying on an upgrade being offered.

What do Huawei’s ecosystem figures mean?
As of September 7, 2026, Huawei said HarmonyOS 6 and HarmonyOS 7 terminal devices exceeded 85 million, counting phones, tablets and PCs. The same FAQ said apps and services available in the ecosystem exceeded 400,000. These are Huawei-published figures, not independently verified counts; the app figure should not be read as 400,000 standalone native phone applications.
Huawei’s June 2026 developer-beta announcement also reported more than 1.1 million registered developers. The number describes registered developers according to Huawei, not a count of developers actively maintaining apps. Earlier, the October 2024 HarmonyOS NEXT announcement reported 15,000-plus native apps and meta-services. Because the dates and categories differ, these figures do not form a like-for-like growth series.

Is HarmonyOS Android, and does it run Android apps?
Huawei identifies HarmonyOS as its own platform and says HarmonyOS 7 is based on OpenHarmony. The official material cited here does not establish Android APK compatibility across HarmonyOS versions, nor does it provide a complete kernel-level comparison. Do not assume that an Android app will install or work just because a device is called a smartphone; verify app availability for the exact HarmonyOS model, version and region.
What to check before choosing a HarmonyOS device
- Confirm the exact model and region. Check the manufacturer’s local product and support information rather than relying on a general HarmonyOS label.
- Check the installed version and upgrade path. Use Huawei’s official update channel for that model; beta announcements do not mean every device or market receives the same release.
- Verify your essential apps and services. Search for each one on the device or Huawei’s regional ecosystem channels, and confirm it supports the needed features.
- Consider your other devices. If cross-device continuity matters, check that your phone, tablet, PC and accessories support the particular functions you intend to use.
For example, Huawei says its FreeBuds Pro 5 can pair with Bluetooth devices running HarmonyOS, Android or iOS, while some Huawei-specific features differ on non-Huawei devices. That illustrates the distinction between basic cross-platform compatibility and full ecosystem integration; the earbuds are not required to use HarmonyOS.
