It checks apps on Google Play before download, scans installed apps—including those installed from outside Google Play—and may warn you about, disable, or remove an app it identifies as harmful. It is distinct from a device’s “Play Protect certification” status.
What Google Play Protect does
Google describes Play Protect as an additional layer of security for Android devices with Google Play services. It is designed to detect and remove potentially harmful applications, including apps obtained from sources other than Google Play. Google’s Android Ecosystem Security FAQs explain that the service checks apps before they are downloaded from Google Play and scans apps installed on a device.
A potentially harmful application, or PHA, is an app that could pose a security risk to you or your data. Google’s examples include spyware, ransomware, trojans, backdoors, click fraud, billing fraud, and denial-of-service attacks. Google says its detection process combines automated systems with review by security experts.
How Play Protect checks apps
Play Protect checks apps at installation and regularly scans apps already on the device. Google describes a lightweight automatic scan each day, as well as full scans that users can request. It can also scan offline to help prevent known harmful apps from being installed; when the device reconnects, Google says it undergoes a full scan. These descriptions are from Google’s Android Ecosystem Security FAQs; they are not a guarantee that every threat will be detected.

What happens if Play Protect finds a risk
The response depends on the detection. Play Protect may show a warning, disable an app until you uninstall it, or remove the app automatically. Google Play Help also describes privacy alerts for some apps removed from Google Play and permission resets for certain apps on some Android versions. Not every detection leads to the same action.
How to check or change the setting
Play Protect is enabled by default, and Google recommends keeping it on. To find its app-scanning control, open the Google Play Store app and follow these steps:

- Tap Play Protect.
- Tap the settings icon.
- Use the app-scanning toggle to enable or disable scanning.
Exact labels or availability may vary with the device, Android version, and Google Play services. Google says Play Protect may receive information such as device network connections, potentially harmful URLs, and operating system and app information to help protect against malicious third-party software and other security issues. The similar names refer to different things. The service checks apps for potential harm; certification is a compatibility status for the device. Google says certified devices passed Android compatibility testing and are eligible to include licensed Google apps such as the Play Store.

Google explicitly distinguishes the two in its Android Help guide to checking and fixing Play Protect certification status. Turning off app scanning will not fix a “Device is not certified” notice.
