Google Pixel HiLight is a ring of color-coded lights around the rear camera flash on supported Pixel 11 Pro phones. With the phone face down, it can identify calls from selected contacts by color and show visual cues while Gemini is active in hands-free use. It is a built-in phone feature, not a separate accessory.
What the HiLight LED does
Google describes HiLight as “a ring of ambient, color-coded LED lights wrapped around the camera’s flash.” Its purpose is to give you a visual cue from the back of a face-down phone, so you can recognize certain activity without picking it up or looking at the screen.

Shows calls from selected contacts
You can associate a color with a favorite contact, letting the light identify that person’s incoming call. Android Authority’s launch coverage reports that this works with calls through Phone by Google and WhatsApp. Google’s feature description highlights contact-specific call colors but does not list those apps.

Signals hands-free Gemini activity
HiLight can also provide visual feedback when Gemini is being used hands-free. Android Authority reports that the light pulses during Gemini listening, thinking, and responding; Google’s official description confirms Gemini activity cues but does not specify those stages.

Are message alerts available?
Android Authority and T3 reported that Google planned to add light alerts for messages from favorite contacts. Neither report gives a release date, and the sources available as of 4 October 2026 do not confirm whether that update has reached users. Treat contact-specific message alerts as planned, not as a confirmed current capability.
